Yeah, I noticed that, too. Is there some kind of prophecy or something I'm not aware of? So many people seem to think FF11 is on its final days for some reason.

well in terms of plotlines. we are missing some holes in the ffxi universe.

aht urghan is the near east. its a small part of a continent. the entire. east half of that area is not shown. that being the far east.

theres reference in game to a land to the west. and a land to the north. and i think theres a southern land to. basically theres room for expansions based on land masses ingame.

They could also come up with some hidden Islands, that would be cool one "The Hidden Island's." or something like that. If I remember correctly every FF game has some sort of hidden Island. So could this game??

Like one that can only be accessed by a Golden Chocobo? sorry

As for disappearing when SE starts the next FF MMO? Maybe not even then as Everquest still exists where EQ2 is out.

No, not if the game is quite active...but how active is enough? That's really the question and it depends on the company. Also, how will the release of a similar MMO (as in another FF MMO) affect the current game? I know if a new FF MMO came out I'd jump straight on the bandwagon without a blink! LOL I'm sure many other people would too. They have to balance staffing 2 MMO's along with running the servers. Sometimes letting go of one to boost the other is the right thing to do.

I know just recently City of Hereos/Villans was sold to another company so that Cryptic could dedicate time and money to developing their next MMO baby.....Marvel Universe Online (I believe thats the current title and its slated for the PC and 360).

Combining servers is a bad bad bad bad idea,
Why? It's not like they haven't done this before.

Yes, but how many people will come back? Look at how many people leave FFXI whenever some new MMO hits the market, and then they're back in a few months. Look at EQ. The population far from dies just because something new comes out.

Look at the FF7 and FF13 projects. I highly doubt SE cares if they work on a lot of games at once if they're making profit, and it's not like they can't split each game off into it's own project and team and keep it managed separately.

I feel like crap today so I may be wrong or remembering incorrectly but:

Aht Urgan is at war with another power to the east of them, this may or may not be the far east that a NPC in CoP is from. (did that sufficiently hide any spoilers?) Either way, there is a lot more going on in the lands to the east and could easily house 2 major powers.

There are the Lands to the South that have not been opened. This is the homeland of the Mithra.

There are the Lands to the North, which are the home and source of the Orcish Empire and the Gigas.

Aht Urgan is indeed at war with the Land to the East (the mythical Far East, home to Tenzen, Ninjas and a race of Yagudo known as Tengu). It's this war that's caused them to open their borders to outside adventurers and hire them as Mercenaries to help defend their city. There is also the Northlands, home to the Gigas and Orcish Empires. The armies we see in the current game are mearly a fraction of the true Orcish hoardes as their main force still controls the northern continent. To the west is a third continent, though this continent is only mentioned in a few passing cutscenes and item descriptions, it seems like an unsettled, arid land. And to the south is the Mithran homelands, the Tsyayan(prolly spelt that wrong but can't look up the name from work) Islands. A dense, tropical jungle archipelgo similar to Kazham, it's where the majority of the Mithra...as well as the rumored Male mithra, make their homes. We have many NPCs, as well as items, openly refer to that land and many of the big name Mithra actually call that place home.

Long story short, FFXI will be around for a LONG time.

Assuming they flesh out the entire thing. Which there is no promise of.

It's a safe assumption they will if the game goes on long enough. They have already stated that they are interested in expanding the world and have already put some effort into making known these areas exist and what is there to lay the ground work.

...On a side note, from what it sounds, you already have a copy of the game that you installed at your father's? Not to take money out of SE's coffers, but you can use the same discs to install it at your mother's. Since I assume you're not making new characters, you wouldn't need new content IDs.

But all those games are not another FF and I would guess that at least 50% of the people that play FFXI are FF fans and/or played one or more FF titles. You know what would be interesting? If they had done a survey when players started to play asking them about how familiar they were with the FF series. I would just have liked to see the numbers and compare them to the current new players, I'm sure the % was much higher in the beginning.

Don't forget that they just might not want to run/develop 2 FF MMO's at the same time too. While SE is riding decently high, things can change quickly (i.e. the big game crash in the 80's). It's hard to look into the future much less predict how a company might handle situations but I wouldn't count out that 5 years from now FFXI could be on its way out. It is possible.....just like it's possible I'll win the lottery!! LOL
