Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

Mac OS X is licensed by The Open Group to use the UNIX® trademark by virtue of being compatible with the Single UNIX Specification (specifically, UNIX 03) when run on Intel processors and paying The Open Group a licensing fee. Ergo, Mac OS X is UNIX.
Thank you, he could've easily found that out if he'd clicked the freakin' link.

Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

this thread feels like it's averted from the main topic....

How about this, somepage is bad now right?
Ok so what else is bad?
I use FFxiah, has anyone found anything harmful on that site? How about Piko's pots? Or any other good site that people normally use.

Forgetting the fact that people use different OS, what's detrimental for the majority of the population who use Windows XP and run on Firefox or maybe IE.
What sites has anyone else found out that are harmful to FFXI?

Also, what precautions should i take? As in, what should i have on Firefox to help prevent stuff like this happening to me? I just read a disturbing story on alla that my friend sent me... I guess it is true now. RMTs are stealing player gil and selling it back to them for profit.
      People are buying stolen gil!
The article also said that two RMT characters named Moonbank and Sunbank. I'd look them up on ffxiah.com to see their history, but i'm afraid to go to any site related to ffxi now...

So, any one have any fortifications that they'd like to mention?

Websites can't be "bad", just what your computer allows them to do.

Semantics. Iocane powder isn't bad if you've spent years acclimating yoru body to it. Visiting certain sites incurs a greater inherent risk right now than others. We can characterize them as being "bad" for users on vulnerable systems.

Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

Uh, no. You can't change your body easily and for free; you'd require either said years of adjusting or spending money on a suit. That's not comparable to taking ten minutes to download and install something so you can browse the internet safely.

Even passively encouraging people to continue to use vulnerable systems by saying that as long as they stay out of certain sites they should be ok is nothing more than a huge disservice to them. If your friend was looking at buying some houses, but none of them had locks on them, you wouldn't suggest he buy the one in the safest neighborhood, you'd suggest he buy some freakin' locks.

What you do not see is called malicious Javascript. It is useless, unwanted and is among the most dastardly things you can come across on the web today.

Alright, what sites host the malicious Javascript? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you browse to the site and we see who is clean and who's account has been jacked.

Inoculating your PC against this attack doesn't mean it's going to be safe from the next one. Regardless of the preventative measures you take, it's prudent to stay away from somepage as a "bad" site since it's likely to harbor malicous code.

Not at all. If you make an effort to keep your information safe, it doesn't matter what is on somepage-- and the fact that it is so popular is proof that there are plenty of good reasons to visit, information wise, at least for the time being. Check the link I provided. If you manage to find an RMT that can get your password when your FFXI partition isn't even mounted-- without you being insanely stupid with your password-- I'll be impressed.

                    It's getting to the point where I want to upgrade my PC so I can run VM to run a web browser in. Heck, since many antivirus/firewall software come with family/3-user license, I can install one copy on the "real" machine, and another in the VM image. x_x;

And all this because there are still morons buying gil from RMTers.

SE should ban them all and just eliminate RMT's income. After a few thousand gil buying account bannings I'm sure most gilbuyers would just stop or quit the game, both things work for me.

I'm not saying it should be retroactive but say make it so starting tomorrow anyone who buys gil gets perma-banned period. The STFU should have more than enough resources to do it.

I wouldn't bother with that-- running a full VM just to run a web browser, and then choosing to use Windows, in the name of security, is a bit of a waste. Not to mention I'm pretty sure that people have figured out how to get out of a VM to the machine that's running it with Viruses, although I don't think anyone has actually created a virus with that technology yet.

Technically IE in Vista is sandboxed.

Its sad but neither of my 2 sisters or their husbands had a clue what Firefox was. MY oldest sister kept thinking it was an ISP provider. An It took me a long while to convince her it was a safer web browser then IE. While speaking about IE. Didn't M$ stop making updates for it a few years back?

FEBA>> I have a stupid person sighting. My sister recently got divorced and I was in charge of fixing her computer. Her 16 yr old step son had made a password for his login screen. Can you guess what the idiot used?

                              I'm guessing either:

                              A- His username.
                              B- 'password'
                              C- His dog's name
D- Some stupidly simple variant of the above

And no, MS has always been making updates to IE afaik, although they might not support anything other than IE7 now. Here's an interesting article about all this http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13505_1-9...tfd.blogs.item

HaHa Feba pretty good it only took you 2 tries. Thats a pretty interesting read on IE and FF. Though I hate ot say it but I am unfamiliar with the term "sandbox" as it relates to IE and Vista. Really in the past 3 years I have only been on IE just long enough to update the systems to FF. As for me I haven't even made the upgrad to Vista yet.
