Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

Kerio: IE Preferences. Google "Disable ActiveX" and that should explain enough of it. IE is the only browser that runs ActiveX, so if you don't use it you shouldn't need to worry about it, although that's not to say there aren't other exploits out there.

      AVG/Spybot/Ad-Aware is all I use.

I've not had a problem on this machine since I opened the box. My old high school buddy told me the day I got it, in a rather screechy voice "IE IS THE ANTI-CHRIST. DOWNLOAD MOZILLA NAO!"

..so I did. And I r happy panda.

No it mustn't, I use Vista on my work and home computers and it doesn't bother me in the least. The magic recipe for peace? DON'T USE AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT You get UAC prompts all the time when logged in as an admin, because just about any action from an admin can be harmful. When logged in as a normal user, the prompts only appear for things like changing system settings and installing programs. Create a non-admin account for your daily computer use and just leave the admin account sitting quietly on the back burner.

Sorry, but I'd rather be in full control of what-this-shoved-down-our-throats-for-majority-of-games-and-programs-OS-does-than-let-it-be-on-the-back burner.

Eh, I usually run as administrator, but I keep UAC turned on so I think I'm good...

I think from now on I'm going to make sure to do all my ffxi related forum hopping either at work or in Ubuntu.

Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

its funny how every time there is something like this, people blame the OS.... people need to get off their retarded "omg you use windows haha" high horses. Like many others, I find Vista to be very nice, and if you use the protection your supost to -.- you wont have problems.

I dont like the interface of MacOS, and I dont like the way Linux is designed, so I use windows, and others use other OSes for the same reason I use Windows.

If you use IE, look on google on how to disable automatic running of these active-X things, thats your best defence against this type of problem, or use another browser, as long as its not IE.

And I still pat myself on the back for choosing to become apart of the Firefox army.

Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

Months ago, before I came back to this game, I spent my time surfing FFXIAH and Somepage from my Wii. Since yanno, it's a Wii and... yeah. You can't exactly kill it. Yet. I might go back to Wii surfing.

Unless that would still be dangerous, seeing as I have to use the Wi-Fi dongle on my PC to connect. I don't think it's possible for the virus to get onto the PC just because the Wii is accessing through it though. That'd make no sense to me. But I'm not very techy, either. ;_; Haven't bothered to buy the Ethernet adapter, and I don't want wireless routers. Because I play PSU on my PS2 and the like.

Re: WARNING - Somepage linked to account hijackings

Well, since it seems to pull your ffxi login information from the computer you surfed the website on, I don't think you'd have anything to worry about by using your wii.

And I'm not on a high horse of any kind.. I'm just saying that since the work computer (which uses windows) is a different computer, and linux is on a different partition...oh, I donno..

And when the reason this is possible at all is the OS, that is the correct assumption.

And what do you know about the inner workings of Linux, honestly?

I don't like the user interface of Mac, and Linux... well to be honest I never tried it. I keep Activex disabled though, so unless someone makes a virus then enables it I think I'm good.

Its still not the OSes fault... if MacOS or Linux was the top OS, you would have a ass load of viruses for it, and people would still be complaining.

and I dont know the inner workings of Linux... never said I did, I just said I dont like the way it was designed.

...How can you know if you like it or not without trying it? Not to mention that the Linux GUI can be changed to look like whatever the hell you want. There are very convincing Windows ripoffs if you like that, as well as very attractive creative themes.

I keep Activex disabled though, so unless someone makes a virus then enables it I think I'm good.
Perhaps for this specific event, but not having ActiveX enabled does not guarantee your security at all.

if MacOS or Linux was the top OS, you would have a ass load of viruses for it, and people would still be complaining.

So let me get this straight: You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about, but you're going to keep saying it anyway? Ok.
