    Re: PS2 Hdd

I believe the offical PS2 HDD has some freaky custom firmware that makes it so FFXI may not pass DNAS athuncation without parts of that firmware. As for the installs people are ranting on about the hard to find originals when the forget that SE just released a PS2 version of the Vana'diel Collection 2008 that retials for $40 US.(you can probably just import it...)

Anyway I can't say for sure if it'd work...I think it would take issues with it not being Sony's firmware...

yes it can be done as long as you have the original disc from the very first original release of ffxi on the ps2, that disc has everything on it for any hd you want to out into the ps2. check out this site here to learn more about it and good luck!!

I wonder if anyone know if you can install ffxi on an unoffical hdd for ps2? I was thinking of buying and installing ffxi on my ps2 as a backup for my pc. I allready have a hdd in it, but since i live in europe it's not the sony hdd. the ps2 is modified so region coding shouldn't be a problem.
A non-Sony hard drive is missing Sony's custom HDD firmware. All official HDD support except Linux scans the hard drive for that firmware, and if the pass fails, the game doesn't enable HDD support. Also, DNAS would detect your modification and stop you from even installing. There is no way to run FFXI on a European PS2. It requires a Japanese or American PS2 with an official HDD, or a PS3 from one of those regions (since PS2 version discs haven't been released in Europe for use on PS3, and PS3s enforce the region lock on PS2 software).

HDLoader works with non-Sony drives because it's unofficial, so it's not required to do the firmware scan. Sony forces all developers making official HDD-compatible software to run the firmware scan, and not enable HDD support if the scan fails.
