Just as another update, Hawk Eye I is simply running out to an enemy fort and examining the ??? there for a few seconds. It turns blockaid on while you're doing it, and I'm not sure how the surrounding enemies would react if they were there. Luckily they were missing when I did it.
And here is my expression of how useless the NPCs are.
The campaign map works, you just have to check it frequently. When the sword icon appears over an area there's still a few minutes to get warped to the zone and get your allied tags before the beastman army actually arrives. I still wish there was a better way, but there is a functional way.
I have to dispute this. I don't know if it's because Bastok has low Recon, but a day ago I was trying to do campaign battles, and the map was updating very very erratically. We would go to the sites where a sword had just appeared, and campaign would be over, or end within seconds. Witnesses in one battle in North Gustaberg said that the battle had been going on for a long time, but that the map wasn't updating.
Edit: Anyone have any idea the recommended lowest level to attempt Campaign battles? I might test it out as my Lv 65 SAM while LFPing. Too bad the wait time is <long time>. -_-
Depends on the enemy troop and the zone you're in. A gustaberg battle, 65 sam would be absolutely fine, Rolanberry fight....prepare for whiffs and donuts. Though that may just be because Quadav have retardely high defensive stats. ._.
Warning: Do NOT assist NPC guards. They do not hold hate.
What would have been a super-epic legendary battle between Bakgodek, Poisonhand, Shadoweye, and One-eyed and the forces of Ronfaure turned into an epic disappointment because the players couldn't actually do anything. There weren't enough of us there to even form a party, but we had NPC allies all over the place. They did all the work, and we mostly died.
Furthermore, you can not begin offensive battles yourself. You must wait for them to somehow begin all on their own. More on this later...
The outcome of the fight depends on how well the NPCs do. Consider each of them to be like mini-AU generals. The best description I've heard of Campaign so far is that it's the bastard child of Besiege and Garrison, both of which rely heavily on he status of the NPCs involved. In the defensive ones it's best to stop the beastmen from ever getting near the fortifications and the NPCs, in the offensive ones, we're supposed to clear a path for the NPCs to hammer the enemies towers.
before people start shout "its broken" we should check to see if doing the recon stuff, might have something to do with it.
I'm going to agree on this, right now the intel in Bastok is stupidly low and as such our campaign intelligence is spotty at best. I would love to know how to increase that rating though, I assumed it would be doing the Intel Campaign Op, but it wouldn't give me the option to do it.

They can take care of themselves. They take down Bakgodek a lot faster than anybody else can. My problem is that you can't do anything with them around. If you heal them, instahate and death; if you attack with them, instahate and death; if you sneeze or blink, same thing.
After finally doing Campaign, both with friends and by myself, I can say I haven't had this much fun in the game in a long time, I'm glad I came back to the game for the expansion. While the xp/hr is obviously small compared to a competent party depending on what you do, I get xp for everything. I ran around as RDM/NIN(yes my sub is underleveled, but I need those shadows) buffing EVERYTHING. I don't think a single NPC went by without getting Protect and Shell. I put Haste on any I found in combat, and saved my cures for players since NPC's have far too much health.
When I went RDM/WHM, and used the elemental staves, I saw very little resists on the grunts, and only a couple of NM's.
All in all I have to do the Campaign for more than a day(although it was a full day) to fully evaluate it, but I find it great. It's something that can be done if you only have a few minutes as others have already stated, your job setup isn't restricted to PT setups as you can either play the survivalist role or the "Lets go crazy and blow shit up while this BRD spams Hymnus on us" role that my Linkshell mates seek to favor alot.
I don't think anyone will be able to pull the fun excuse in regards to crappy job/subjob combinations in exp parties anymore at higher levels at least hopefully. If they want to use a wierd setup, they can take it to Campaign and let the people who want to conventional xp stick to that.
I'm not sure about minimum level. I went there on my at-the-time 36WHM because I was literally 5xp away from leveling, and I went in simply to do a few buffs and heals. I got 100xp from that in what was a 10 minute battle due to having to constantly rest for mp. This morning we had a mid-50's THF doing Campaign with us and she was doing a decent amount of damage and was able to accurately hit things, and was averaging around the same xp/battle that I was.
For kicks I took my 16NIN to a defensive battle and earned nothing because I couldn't do a darn thing. I haven't tried taking it to an offensive one to see if its possible to wack on a fort, but for the damage he can put out I imagine it'd have been a waste of time.
was doing an offensive campaign in jugner. part way through sandorian npcs popped up to help us. and then warped out. when they warped out my allied tag went with them. only my allied tag. everyone else still had theres. and i got 0 xp/allied notes i miss my allied tag
The EXP gained seems heavily flawed. The WHM in my group yesterday got 2200+ exp. The PLD who tanked a LOT and used 2hr got about 1200. Myself as a SMN got a good ol' 850ish even though I had Garuda use Pred Claw several times each time doing about 1500-2300 dmg each, melee hits doing more than anyone else (70-90 dmg), and holding hate for good portions of battle.
