I don't know where to put this so I'll just put it here. This happening was from a little while ago, and is probably not all that impressive for most of you. This was written by my LS leader, and I enjoyed reliving it.
There comes a moment in one's ffxi career when one can only sit back grinning like an idiot and just say "wow!"
So anyway, on Saturday night, Eia-chan and I were sitting around wondering what to do. We decided to go exploring, and eventually we decided on going to Gustav Tunnel.
After running around, killing a few EP's and discussing the nature of the universe, Eia and I began to make our way from the Cape Terrigan exit back towards the labyrinthine northern expanse of the tunnel, only to find our way partially blocked by a massive wyvern NM, Bune.
After some frantic /flist and linkshell recruiting, we managed to convince Grak, Gutter, Cyprian, Pantmonkey and Donnny to join us and we'd take a crack at this big mofo. Another two full parties from HNMLS's arrived and got initial claim.
We decided to stick around a bit. The first party to land claim seemed to be doing well for the first while, but they were burning through their resources very quickly, and holding a tight formation around the mob, which is actually a pretty bad situation to be in, as Bune has a vicious AOE paralyze attack. Though they did admirably, they ended up succumbing to Bune's assault, and for a few moments it was a mad free-for-all as Bune became unclaimed.
All 7 members of our entourage unleashed every claiming tool we had, but it wasn't enough to prevent the first party from getting a brief re-claim before promptly wiping again. when they dropped the second time, we managed to get the claim ahead of the party from the 3rd LS and fanned out.
Bune was at 38% hp at claim. We had no dedicated tanks, a split group, and the other shells doing what they could to hamper our efforts (most notably, refusing to reclaim hate while keeping claim and allowing bune to attack and subsequently kill Eialune and Cyprian and dashing off when a sporadic burst of healing on the first party who had claim grabbed enmity on a second occasion).
This is the part where I get to gush.
I am very proud of the way that our team, comprised only of Aequitas members, handled the battle. Pantmonkey and I took turns tanking Bune in the beginning. Shortly after claim was solidified for our pt, Firewall arrived, and luckily for us, happened to be close by. In the fighting, neither Eialune or Donnny saw his requests for a direct invite, but in the end, this proved to be a massive boon for all of us, as FW remained unaffected by the AOE paralyze, and was graciously willing to help with some curing, paralyna and, in my case, some raise action during the battle (it ain't over 'til the cat's munching terra firma).
After a few moments, things began to turn ugly. Of course, the other two parties had absolutely no intention of providing any assistance to us during the battle, and eventually our defences were worn down. Pantmonkey fell, a few minutes later, I fell, and PM had to tank briefly with weakened HP. It was Grak, though, who managed to take charge in the critical last few moments and maintain a hold on Bune's attention as the mages kept the pt afloat.
I should also mention at this point that our pt setup was the following: 2x war/nin (PM + me), 3x blm/whm (Donnny, Gutter, Firewall -- though fw couldn't directly nuke), whm/blm (Eialune), drg/war (Grak) and rdm/whm (Cyprian). This is not an ideal setup for this mob, and, as Grak informed me later, one of the other pt's went so far as to say "lol -- drg" beforehand. To these detractors: "TARU-POWERED ANCIENT CIRCLE, BITCH!!!!" (see pictures to follow).
When all was said and done, after an extensive battle with several beautifully handled ko's, Donnny managed to land the finishing touch with a 800 damage burst.
Not to get all sappy or anything, but I feel this needs to be said:
This linkshell and, more importantly, the friendships fostered by the people therein have proven that we can accomplish great things in a group. No one would think for a second that Aequitas is a HNMLS or a dedicated end-game or mission-based shell. What we do is brought about by a feeling of comraderie and desire to achieve these things with and for our friends.
When I created Aequitas, the average level range for our members was around 25-30. People were getting stoked about fighting dragons and looking forward to getting their kazham keys. As a whole, we've progressed through the game. The average level of our party members' main jobs is around 68-73 and we're tackling bigger and better things. When we had an 8-person group take down Bune, we had 8 people who were there for the experience. That means a lot.
I'm proud. I'm proud of what we accomplished, I'm proud of where we are collectively, I'm proud to know all of you and I feel lucky to have such a great group of friends. Thank you all for your efforts, your time, and for sticking together for so long. It's times like this and people like you that make playing this game so worthwhile. Thank you all.
