Re: FFXI Needs To Be Advetised More
Honestly, what MMO ad could possibly win over the Mr. T WoW commercial?
For the most part I agree with Mhurron. FFXI is pretty hardcore as MMOs go. Someone who doesn't already have some introduction into the genre or at least some adjacent genre like Diablo probably would have a hard time jumping in and liking it. The people that would be interested do seem to find their way here eventually. How many of our new player threads have an OP that says "I've tried some other MMOs and ..."?
WoW is structured in a way that's much less demanding and much more mass-market consumable, and stands to gain considerably more from print and aired advertising than FFXI does. Our game maintains a pretty strong playerbase through brand name recognition and word of mouth. I think it's doing fine as is.

The Bnet community is a huge one.
Also, blizzard has a much better reputation than SE does >. >
Let's not forget that all of their franchises are massive hits too. Just go to South Korea and ask how popular Star Craft is.

Bah, seems I haven't reached the required number of posts to post links either. Eitherway, the Shatner commercial was both cheesy and e-mazing at the same tmie.Last edited by Exertim; 11-26-2007, 01:50 AM.Feiya - Midgardsormr

Re: FFXI Needs To Be Advetised More
I stopped playing back in 04 when my computer went to hell (*sniff I miss my old character). Thought about getting back into it, but would require buying a new computer or ps2 and was just to lazy to do either. I've got a 360 and was browsing through the videos section for download and saw the trailer for Wings, and it said it was coming out the day after I watched the video. I was shocked and amazed. I was overcome with joy. Had they released FFXI on the very system that I have become addicted to? Yes it was true. Come to find out the game has been out since early 2006 for the Xbox.... "when did this happen?!" I ask myself. Long story short, I'm back in the game. But they really need to promote/advertise better, I agree.

Originally posted by IfritnoItazura View PostMy understanding is that WoW has a huge subscription base because it's fun, and easy to pick up (and put down). The Warcraft series may had a huge following which readily translated into initial subscribers for WoW, but if the game had sucked, word of mouth would've destroyed it. (As you said, the word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertisement--positive or negative.)
Final Fantasy XI is more engrossing, though, in part because it requires so much effort to get into it. (Yes, we're addicts, and we're screwed.) While I agree that normal advertisement won't be cost effective in increasing the player base, I refuse to accept that there's nothing reasonable S-E can do to gain better mind share for this game. (It's the principles of things--everything can be improved.)
Effort wise my best analogy is FFXI is like making a home cooked meal vs eating double-cheesburgers at MacDonalds. The home meal is much more satisfying, but more people take the easier route since it involves less effort and give quicker gratification.
