Re: Nooo! They screwed up the PS2 Vana'diel Collection 2008

hello, why do people reply to posts asking for help with negative comments? if your not going to answer the question or give some form of help stfu, keep it to yourself.
now to try and help i play ffxi on my ps3, but i do have the original 80gb version. i have heard that the 60gb doesnt support ps2 games. what they changed i have no idea. you might try the playstation forums, maybe someone there can help or sony support. i do not know about the vandiel collection 08 version for the ps2 i ordered wings only. i did see someone say something about downloading pol first then ffxi from that disc. also have you done all the updates for your ps3? there is also a download you have to get to play some ps2 games have you downloaded it? ffxi was one of these games btw.

A combination of boosting their post count, which they'll claim they don't care about, and adding to their online tough guy persona.

I did. It stated that the ps3 BC will be and is (On the 60gb and 20gb versions) 99.9% BC. The newer models of the ps3 (80gb) are also BC but only about 85% BC because they went the emulation route on that one and got rid of the hardware they were using in the 60 and 20 models. The newest model (40gb) does not play ps2 games at all.

Wonder why they just didn't make a PS3 Vanadiel 2008 collection?

Too much work on their part, I remember hearing them mention the reason why they weren't doing a ps3 version, is cuz ps3 is backward compatible, and they already had the ps2 version out there.

And that cuz the structure of the ps3 is so vastly different, that it'd take a long time. Xbox 360 was probably pretty easy for them, cuz like so many other developers say, xbox 360 development is so simular to PC, that they probably ported the PC version to 360.

It was stated over and over by SE, that they would not rerelease FFXI in any way for the PS3, and what does the Collection 08 say? PS2 not PS3, so how did SE screw up? its not their fault that Sony wants to be little babies about their system

2-3 Dozen titles out of THOUSANDS of games, the original and all other FFXI titles being amongst them *other* then the 2008 collection. This isn't a BC issue in any way it's a software glitch. For some reason the 2008 collection and 2008 collection *only* will not give the option to the guy to partition off part the harddrive for FFXI. The PS3 *reads and acknowledges* the 2008 collection, but it acts like there's no hard drive. Backwards compatibility is not an issue at all here.

I'd say you'd have better luck checking out a PS3 forum or something, there might be a way to partion off part of the HD on your own. If not, then perhaps booting up with an older disc first would work and get the thing going.

I skimmed the whole topic and it's not SE fault...it's Sony's fault. I believe the PS3 bios is only made to find a few HDD compatable games. That being said with the Ps2 collection & Wings of the Goddess being new the SKUs are not on the list. Heck I tried my Socom 2 because I wanted to put the map pack I got for it on my PS3 and it would not find the drive!

The only thing we can do about this is to report it to Sony's Playstation 3 incompatibility list and complain at them untill the release a new firmware update.

People who want help do not bitch about problems their own ignorance caused. They just look for a solution.

Yeah, this is the only route for those of us that have encountered this problem and don't have access to the older discs. Hopefully sony can find the time to patch it and make me not regret the $40 purchase.

I have successfully installed and run playonline and ffxi on my new 80gb ps3. I offer this step by step guide to what i did in hopes that it will help others who have had problems:

Disclaimer: You must have the original discs that came with the ps2 HDD. From all i've read there is currently no way to get a compilation package (i.e. vana'diel collection 2008) to work without them.
You will also need your playonline ID and password.
Obviously internet connectivity is a must.
I do not yet own WOTG so i cannot attest to the feasibility of that yet.

                        1. Place the Playonline/Tetramaster disc into ps3.

                        2. Go through the setup process as normal.

                        3. When offered a choice between registering new playonline ID or current members, choose the latter. I recommend you do not choose the automatic log-in option, you will see why later as it gets annoying having it log-in to playonline and having to immediately log back off to the original log in screen.

                        4. The installation should be relatively short, after which the system will reboot, restart from the ps3 toolbar (should be under games> playstation 2 game)

                        5. Playonline will connect and update (about 280 files, 6 minutes with hi-speed connection)

                        6. Now log-off playonline viewer back to the playonline log-in screen.

                        7. Choose the install option, you will be prompted to insert a disc. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                        8. Insert the ffxi disc which has the orginal game and the rise of zilart expansion. (there are 2 discs in the orginal HDD final fantasy xi package)

                        9. Once the game has booted choose install.

(note: i viewed the movie first and then it begins to install, but this install did not start. i had to reboot and just choose the install game option.)

                        10. This install takes about an hour, find something else to do.

                        11. Afterwards hit OK and then the game asks you to remove the disc, do so, then hit OK.

                        12. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

                        13. Now choose install, insert Chains of Promathia disc, start again from step 9-11. This install takes 25 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                        14. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

                        15. Now choose install, insert the Treasures of Auht Urgan disc, start again from steps 9-11. This install takes 30 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                        16. Finally start playonline viewer again from ps3 viewer, however you should now go ahead and choose Games>Final Fantasy xi>Play and your update should begin.

                        17. Go to bed, as this update includes 4 and a half years of tweaks and changes made by POL and squeenix. Mine checked 17000 files, but many are redundant and only about 6500 are actually needed. This download can vary but i'd say 4-6 hours is a fair assumption based on hi-speed internet.

                        18. Congratulations!

If you have any questions or problems using these steps PM me, i'd be happy to help.

                        Preparing to install
To use this feature, you must first install [PS2 System Data] on the hard disk. You can download [PS2 System Data] from (PLAYSTATION®Store).

                        1.
                        Select (PLAYSTATION®Store) under (PLAYSTATION®Network).

Follow the on-screen instructions to download. When the download completes, [PS2 System Data] will automatically be installed. [PS2 System Data] is saved in (Game Data Utility) under (Game).

                        3.
                        Close (PLAYSTATION®Store).

Thanks, but that doesn't do anything for the problem involved with this thread. If you don't have any of the previous discs, you can't install Vana'diel Collection '08 on a PS3.

currently the only workaround for this problem is:

Install the POL viewer from FFXI(original), CoP, or TAOU

Load up the POL viewer...update it...then select "Install" from the POL menu. Insert the disk(s) for the Vana'diel Collection 2008 and start installing from there.

That also doesn't work on an 80 GB PS3. The WotG and 08 Collection discs still crash after the reboot after choosing Install in PlayOnline Viewer. Installing from an older disc only makes WotG installable on a 20 or 60 GB PS3.

Yes because the 80 gig also has other issues: According to Sony's PS3 compatibility list it will even lock up when using the original installs(trying to install the game). That darn software emulation stinks that way!
