  • FFXI in Wine.

Now that FFXI has been updated to DX9, is anyone interested in trying to get it to work in Wine? I would install it and try to get it to work myself, but that would require a valid (13$/month) content ID to log in with. I know there's quite a few people out there that would love to see FFXI work in Wine, so it would be nice to see if people here care enough to put the effort into it. Not to mention, WoW works perfectly in Wine, which means that's just one more advantage it has over FFXI until someone gets it to run FFXI as well.

Although I doubt anyone that doesn't already know what Wine is would be interested in helping, there might be one or two of you who would take up getting FFXI to run in it as a hobby or interest, so in short: Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on x86 UNIX and Unix-like OS, such as BSD, Linux, and Mac OS X. Wine runs many games with few or no problems, such as HL2, WoW, C&C3, as well as many applications. You can see more info on what Wine can run and how well at http://appdb.winehq.org/ .

By helping to get FFXI working in Wine, it would be possible to play the PC version on OS other than Windows, again such as Linux or OS X. This would open up more platforms for FFXI to be played on, which would allow people to use their OS of choice without having to worry about dual booting, or possibly even draw in people that wouldn't have otherwise tried it.

I was already planning on giving it a shot sometime under 64-bit Kubuntu. Not tonight, though. Maybe sometime in the next week or so.

        Re: FFXI in Wine.

I will at a minimum be keeping tabs on it in Wine Appdb, but I'd like to give it a try as I have time. I have an LFS system, so it's a bit more work for me than some, but once I've worked out my 3D issues (at the moment have X with no 3D accel, need to split that up and install nVidia's GL over one and Nouveau over another), it would be a good thing to test.

I wonder when they'll release a new benchmark tool; given that the rendering engine has changed, VB3 is essentially obsolete as of today, so presumably they should provide a DX9-based VB4 corresponding with WotG.

Anyone that wants to help, keep in mind it is perfectly possible to test this for free, since it is all free software. All you would have to do is download a linux distro (Ubuntu would probably be best for most), set it up on an old computer or dual boot (if you want to Dualboot, I recommend Wubi since there is less risk of messing up your HD that way), and install Wine. Then follow the instructions on winehq.org and the sites it links to to file bug reports, test data, and so on.

I just finished compiling the latest wine from git. I'll be installing it now, although all I can really do is test POL unless someone will trust me with their account info.

                        Re: FFXI in Wine.

Pol was already known to work (as long as you registered the dlls manually at appropriate points, as noted in the guide on appdb), so that doesn't really help.

I'm sure we'll have some accounts on the success or failure of testing the new version within a couple weeks.

I know. The FFXI install was causing my old PC to slow down too much, so I stopped. I might install it again if I have an account to use, but I doubt that'll happen.

I still highly recommend anyone that does actively play FFXI to file results on Appdb, as well as new bug reports, and say if old bugs get fixed. On bugzilla, you can vote for bugs you want fixed, which gets that application closer to working. I highly recommend you do this, as it shows interest which can draw development.
