    Re: Today's update.

    I'm getting the same poor FPS rate. Not as much as on my desktop version, but on my laptop its real noticeable. Considering, the laptop is new that really irks me. I mean, the fps rate took a 180 nose-dive. Yeah, I'd like to see some quick super fix patch on it otherwise no more afk in mh ls talk during classes for long time ; ;

    <.<; Please SE, make Accomplice shorter on recast... like 45 seconds? @_@;

        Re: Today's update.

        Seen reports on Blue Gartr and other forums about the low FPS problem on PC since the patch. Apparently, USB keyboard tend to cause it, and unplugging them immediately brings the game back up to 30 FPS if you system was giving that frame rate before. However, that means you need a P/S2 keyboard handy, and I've seen a lot of computers lately without P/S2 ports. A few people have also said their USB controller adapters have been causing the same frame rate decrease.

          Strangely enough, I'm not having this problem with windowed FFXI and I have a USB keyboard...

          ...what I am having a problem with, however, is sluggishness typing with said keyboard in other programs while FFXI is running, especially Firefox. Hm. -- Pteryx

              Re: Today's update.

              I'm gonna have to bet that my stuff will be screwed up once i get updated. ...that's the breaks though.

              With this many PC users having this many problems, I'd bet my last dollar that SE will be burning the midnight oil in order to clear this up. ...or at least they had better be. I won't be paying them money for a game that I can't play (should my stuff go all afoul....) for a month or so.

              More updates later.

                Seems that installing Brandson's UI mod crashes the game whenever I log in. Anyone else experiencing the same?

                  I noticed that yesterday. And again as I'm typing this. The text appearing is actually several words behind where I'm typing. Makes it hard to check for errors as I type.

                      Hes mentioned hes trying to update it on the blog, but as of yhet he can't DL the thing so we're gonna have to wait. I personally can't stad the ugly normal text anymore. But I must endure.

                        Where does that information come from? Was that a quote from FanFest or something? It just seems like kind of a bad idea from a business standpoint to have two PC platforms to support/troubleshoot/etc.

                        Another possible option is to disable "HID-Compatible" devices in Device Manager. This may or may not work, depending on your input devices, but it did the trick for me. I have a USB keyboard (BTC 6300CL) and a mouse on a P/S2 adapter. I just disabled every HID device Windows would let me disable (one of them did not have a disable option), and my frame rate jumped back to normal again. If this doesn't work and you need those devices enabled again, I think it takes a reboot or at least the Find New Hardware wizard.

                          Re: Today's update.

                          Windowed mode is a little underwhelming to me, too. Tried running in both 1024x768 and 1280x1024 (which is native) in windowed mode and FPS dropped quite a bit, almost as bad as when I play on my friends 5 year old notebook with shared v-memory. The display is much darker; I adjusted the gamma all over the place, but all that seems to really do for brightness is make the ground in RuLude way bright, otherwise everything else is unchanged to me.

                          A small request, for those that are not having problems with windowed mode; can you post some minor hardware specs? Just trying to figure out where the problem lies (if it really is a USB keyboard thing then I'm screwed, as I already have a few USB keyboards and I aint buying a new PS2 keyboard just for this).

                          My specs (for what its worth):

                          AMD Athalon 64 4800+ (oc'd to 2.8 GHz)
                          2 Gigs PC3200
                          Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS (512MB DDR2, crappy but well above this game)
                          Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro

                          In Full Screen game runs fine, so I guess I'm stuck without windowed mode unless SE fixes this before my static EXP Wednesday Night ; ;
                          I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...

                            Re: Today's update.

                            For me, the new windowed mode is working fine. I have a USB keyboard and USB mouse. Of course, Fullscreen mode still won't Alt-Tab which is...yawn, and windowed mode has standard window chrome which is so 1991... It's easy to hide the chrome with clever window positioning and sizing (like everyone's favorite "cheat").

                              Gamma is a little off, haven't really played with it. Other than that, fps seems normal throughout Aht Urhgan, including at the AH.

                                Onboard sound of some sort. VIA chipset, I think.

                                Windower works fine after disabling HID stuff in Device Manager. Before that, I was getting the drop in frame rate. Gamma doesn't seem to have changed at all (never used the gamma stuff on unofficial windower, never changed the FFXI Config setting, turned all three channels to zero in game before the update).
