Re: What do you think FFXI needs to bring it back to a top ranked MMO?

Hi guys. I'm a recent newcomer to the FFXI mmorpg (I began playing on the Midgar server less than a week ago). My mmorpg history basically began with the Kunark expansion in Everquest followed by World of Warcraft up until a month ago when I finally gave up on it. Since I was bored, I decided to give FFXI a whirl. So a few good and bad things that I've encountered thus far (I've been powergaming the past few days and I quickly went from level to 23 WAR main job / 10 Monk Subjob):

    1. The lack of an alt-tab function. I don't care what kind of MMORPG you're playing; you NEED to be able to tab. Thankfully, I found Windower fairly quickly so that problem is gone. It would still be nice if SE implemented an official alt-tab function though.

    2. Lack of addon and mod UI support. Some may actually see this as a good thing. I suppose coming from two mod heavy MMO's (EQ and WoW) this would obviously look like a downside to me. This leads me to my next point:

    3. The UI itself. I'm sorry, but the PC built in UI is flat out terrible. Even after switching to WSDF movement, it's STILL terrible. Thankfully, I have a USB converter that allows me to plug in my PS2 controller so all is well. The built in UI is just so much better when you're using a controller just due to the nature of it (L1 brings up my CTRL macros, R1 brings up my ALT macros, L2 is rest, R2 is focus, X=cancel, O=confirm, Triangle=menu, Box=hide/show UI, keypad=menu selection, Analog=Movement and camera).

    4. Bag space. Does the bag limit of 30/30 ever increase? Please god, let it be so.

    5. Ridiculous learning curve. This is probably why the playerbase of FFXI is relatively smaller compared to other top ranked MMORPGs. I have a lot patience, something that I unwillingly obtained through hours upon hours of raids in EQ and WoW, so I'm not as likely as the average player to flat out break down and quit. And trust me, I've been in situations where I had to quit out of the game for a break due to how frustrating it is at certain times. Thankfully, while the game world is huge and unforgiving, there's a wealth of knowledge just lying around if you're not lazy (these forums, Allakhazam, the wiki, and even Gamefaqs all contain useful and helpful information).

On top of having to farm Gil since that's more or less the only way you're going to get gear at the lower levels (I was told to focus only on one thing: either crafting or EXP/lvling at a time), you also have to deal with the ass clown elitists. I remember when I first got into a Dunes group back at level 12 (last Wednesday) and how utterly whiny and childlike the group leader was. I explicitly stated that I was **NEW** when he sent me a tell asking if I would like a group, but shortly afterwards he decided to go on a powertrip rant about how I'm "lazy" about my gear and how I should have had invis/sneak consumeables after I died running through the dreaded cave by the bats. This was BEFORE I read the guide about the different types of aggro (blood/sound/sight). How in the world was I supposed to know that bats, a normally docile and non aggro mob, would suddenly decide that killing me would be in their best interest?

Granted, my gear was still in the level 7-8 range, but you have to remember that as a newbie, I'm not going to have an endless amount of gil to fork out. I later checked the prices on the oils, and I'm amazed at how some people can actually expect someone to shell out 20k+ for oils during their first play through in the Dunes. I DID meet some great and intelligent players during my time in sandland though, and I learned an ASSLOAD about the game during my time in the Dunes as well. Qufim is treating my well thus far and I'm still trying to learn the basics of the Renkei system (does anyone have a link to a guide somewhere that tells you the different possible combinations?).

Thankfully, the majority of the FFXI community are a great bunch. It's a vast improvement from WoW in that regard at least.

    6. Lastly, the grouping problems. I guess this is in a way a good thing for me, since I automatically start doing my papers / studying when I sit down and wait for a group to beam me up. I think the longest I've sat looking for group is around the 2 hour margin, whereas I was hit with a tell as soon as I logged in one day in the Dunes. I really wish more people played this game so that such a problem would fix itself, but with the big learning curve and unforgiving death exp penalty, I can see why FFXI wouldn't be a player's cup of tea.

Oh, and thanks for the resolution / music change guides. Those really made my day ^^

The no alt tab, was explained by SE a long time ago, but with WotG expansion coming this month, we are getting it.

The UI is of classic standard FF style, and fits the game perfectly, SE does not want it messed with.

The UI is not bad... it was designed with a controller in mind, because it came out for PS2 first.

Mog Safe, storage and Moglocker go up to 80 and inventory goes up to 60 (70 in new expansion)

Ridiculous learning curve? Yeah this game is harder then most MMORPGs, thats why most of us like it -.-

Elitist are every where, have to deal with it.....

You can always go solo EP monsters while seeking for a group, its not fast EXP but it atleast better then nothing.

Hmm. >_> Have you check FFXIclopedia, yet? (Like you suggested?)

Did you use the New Player Guide from S-E? That may flatten the curve a bit.

I just check the prices on Midgardsormr:
        Silent Oil: 6k
        Prism Powder: 6.8k

        Beehive Chips: 4.5k

One set of Silent Oil stack and Prism Powder stack cost less than three stacks of Beehives chips. Not that I'd expect newbies to have them, but they aren't that expensive, to be honest.

You caused a problem to the party by not getting to camp in a timely fashion. The leader took it out on you. (According to you.) While that may not be the nicest of all possible scenarios, it shouldn't be surprising.

You were a WAR, right? WARs are expected to tank at those level. You cannot tank effectively using Lv.7-8 gears in Valkurm Dunes--you weren't prepared. Of course, you may or may not have known the role you were expected to play, so preparing would've been hard. *shrug*

(This is one reason why I tell people WAR is a terrible first job. >_> )

The importance of exp partying is both a boon and a curse.

The K.O. penalty is just 10% of current level's exp; you'd have be really, really bad at exping to die 10 times in a row... Plus, if you get even just a Raise 1, that'd be reduced to 5%. Even less, if you have the appropriate Mog House furnishings.

No gears to lose upon K.O., no gears to repair just for fighting (never mind losing!). By the time you can lose 4.4k exp in one home point trip, the parties usually make at 6k/hour (and can get much better), and the White Mages have Raise III, which cuts K.O. pentalty down to 440 exp, or 2-4 battles.

You can sit on the sidelines after being raise III'ed from K.O.'ed, and by the time you become unweakened, the rest of the party already made back for you the exp you've lost, and then some.

        Hardly a severe penalty.
        Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
        yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

Re: What do you think FFXI needs to bring it back to a top ranked MMO?

Actually, I think the cap on lost exp is 2.4k. And by the time you reach that there are already reraise items, if you happen to be traveling without a WHM, RDM or PLD (all of which can cut that down to *at most* 1.2k, the WHM can do better).

Regarding the larger issue: I think FFXI's popularity is in tension with its quality. FFXI does not greatly attract the Leeroy Jenkins of the world (of which there are many); while it *could* be modified to do so, I would really prefer that it wasn't.

In short, I think that FFXI is less popular than some other games *because* it's a better game that demands more cooperation, skill and effort by its players. (Or at least, it used to be, before ToAU.) Those are qualities that I would like to see it keep, and regain, and even expand on.

The idea of a WoW raid trying to deal with a boss with AOE instant death is amusing, to be sure. But nobody would expect them to actually be able to handle it. In FFXI, that boss already exists, and has been beaten (I can't find the video ATM, but I've seen it before).
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
          RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

It isn't a logical financial decision to give FFXI the overhaul it would need and the advertising it would need to compete with the big dogs. I could see them scraping FFXI and starting over. This was their first attempt at a huge MMO and they have learned many valuable lessons that they could apply to a new MMO to make it more competitive.
