  • Buying FFXIO

    'lo!

I've been thinking a few times about buying FFXIO, but decided not to.
Now, I'm tempted again, to get it to be able to play a few months before the army calls.

Now, I've been trying to look through the forums a bit, not that much but at least I tried.
    So, here's my few questions:

Is it still popular? As in, are there lots of players online and will it be easy to find people to group up with at lower levels and so?

And then, what expansions/package am I to buy to be able to play the game?
As I've seen there's a new expansion coming up soon.

If there's a post somewhere here about this, please do forgive me and link me it!

    Cheers, Dale.

When I opened this thread, I thought you meant you wanted to buy the forum.

It's still popular. Most servers have a pretty solid population, and though there are slow points (especially in the earlier levels), people are still able to level without much trouble. Many people solo/are powerleveled through those early levels, but parties can still be found.

If you're on the PC, I'd recommend purchasing either the Vanadiel Collection (original game and all current expansions) for $20. If you're not 100% sure you want to get back into the game, look into the starter disk offered by SE for a few bucks at Gamestop and EBGames. It will still have all of the data that the Vanadiel Collection has, but it won't have registration codes for the expansions, so you can save a few bucks if you decide you're not interested.

Ah, thanks for the info, and quick answer!
Will just have to pay a visit to the store after work tomorrow and check what they have there.

Also, might have to look up a bit on the forums to pick a server and such.
And sorry about the topic, couldn't figure out a better way to put it

        No need to apologize.^^

If you have no particular server in mind, I'd like to suggest Kujata. We have a number of forum regulars in a Linkshell there, and we're always looking for new members.

If nothing else, you may want to see if they have the trial disc. For a just few bucks, you can't go wrong. A few months ago I picked the game back up after a three year break. Starting from scratch the game feels a lot more accessable than it did before. I'm really enjoying it now.

I think if you removed the O from the title you'd be better off heh.

Good luck in FFXI! I hope you like it Just remember that it can seem a little slow in the beginning but things pick up.

Also, and this opinion may not fly with others, if someone offers you a link pearl you should probably take it. FFXI guild structure isn't as strict as most games as, here, you can be in as many as your inventory allows. That could cause social/political problems eventually so don't go crazy but it also means you're more free to test taste and maybe meet people that work well with your personality.

Find a good group of people to hang out with. Make friends early and you'll get a lot more out of your time in Vana'diel.

If you are leaving soon to the army, I don't know if its a good idea. You can't imagine how addictive this game can be. You might just defect and get a dishonorable discharge. Even the opening of the game says something like: Remember that this is just a game and friends/family/work comes first. Anyway, if you REALLY want to "try" some crack, it'll only cost $20 at your local store for all the updates and versions together. Shit, they should give you your first hit for free...

I'm sure that the majority of the players don't consider FFXI 'crack'. You can however become very involved in it and it can eat up a bit of your time. I'm not sure how far you'd get into the game for the first month or so, but I enjoyed my playtime I had in those early levels.

I'd go for the starter pack and see if the game catches you as something you'd like to play. In a month I doubt you'll miss not having the expansions. When you come back from Uncle Sam you can pick up the new collection with the latest expansion and play again if you wanted.

One small note, the game is FFXI. FFXIO is generally understood to mean a (this one, actually) forum, so mixing up the two acronyms will confuse people.

Heh, I've played quite a few mmorpgs, some addictive, but I manage.

I just have to find a way to pay the monthly fee because I've only got the Visa electron at the moment, and it's usually only causing problems.

Most convience stores have pre-paid Visa/Mastercards that you can charge that work just fine for FFXI. That's what I personally use since I don't like to have my real CC info anywhere on or near the internet.
