They released a New Player Guide recently and have been updating it regularly with the monthly updates I believe.
To make a kind of Brady Guide that was made for the game years ago would be impractical now. SE has added more jobs, new abilities, spells, merits and such. Any guide as far as strategy goes would quickly become dated as new more effective strategies are found.
For example, HNMs. War/Whm was a popular tank for a long time (abeit years ago), but you'd be laughed out of dragon's aery now if you showed up as that. And why publish guides for missions and such when so many great resources are available now.
ffxi.wikia.com has just about anything you need. If you don't agree with the drama from that site from a while ago, use the BG one as it's building. Not only do you get a break down of who to talk to and such; but most of the fights have a strategy attached to them. These are from a real player user base and represents the very social aspect of the game. Players have joined across servers to share tips and such how to defeat mobs and complete missions. And I personally find that much better than any Brady guide I've read. Mainly because you know the person writing it isn't doing so for money, but rather just to share thier experience.
The person has nothing to gain but a reputation for helping; Brady and other guide makers are just there to make money.

This is an MMORPG. Asking for a strategy guide clearly indicates your blatant unfamiliarity with the genre.Originally posted by ArmandoNo one at Square Enix has heard of Occam's Razor.Originally posted by ArmandoNintendo always seems to have a legion of haters at the wings ready to jump in and prop up straw men about hardware and gimmicks and casuals.Originally posted by TaskmageGOD IS MIFFED AT AMERICA

Is it necessary to fall over ourselves to be rude to the OP? The question has already been answered several times. Posting just to add another insult to the pile isn't helpful.

Not so much, no. He's a nice guy who is just a little confused and very new to the game. Being assholes to him for asking newbish questions is no way to behave.

There is a difference between "Is Square-Enix ever going to make a Strategy Guide for FFXI?" and "Hey, Square-Enix! How about making a guide for FFXI over here!"Last edited by Yellow Mage; 10-21-2007, 11:45 AM.Originally posted by ArmandoNo one at Square Enix has heard of Occam's Razor.Originally posted by ArmandoNintendo always seems to have a legion of haters at the wings ready to jump in and prop up straw men about hardware and gimmicks and casuals.Originally posted by TaskmageGOD IS MIFFED AT AMERICA

Re: Hey square how about an up to date strategy guide?
There is no reason, the way I see it, to spit at someone's face for being blunt in their speech, atleast not in this particular case, it obviously depends on the context.
I could list a number of convenient replies for his first question, and his second question, that could be said without being any unpleasant. But I doubt I'm dealing with people who can't communicate in a civilized manner, you tell me.
Do realise that I prefer to appeal to a sense of community and humility instead of pointing fingers and assigning warnings or what have you. So please let there be a smile on my face at the end of this thread?signatures are for pussies mew mew mew, here's mine

Balfree's right (and so is Murphie, for that matter). I've been in a bad mood, today, for some odd reason (still am, kind of), so I apologize if I came off as spiteful.
I also know it is no excuse for my actions, so I apologize further.

But yeah, i mean i would have liked a reference guide for ffxi that is comprehensive up until this point, but wiki has probably made mmo strat guides obsolete because of their structure but a guide you can look at when you're playing with maps and tips is always nice, plus who doesn't like a handsome looking strategy guide?
It's always funny to see people exploit an opportunity to be an obnoxious asshole when a relatively new user asks a question. Shows a lot about a person's character

Re: Hey square how about an up to date strategy guide?
To be honest the posters around here aren't generally assholes, just that they were peeved at the perceived tone of your post, in which you appeared to demand something unreasonable.
A strategy guide takes time to put together and money to print, but in an MMORPG, new content is added and old content is changed regularly and frequently. It's not worth the trouble just so that it'll become inaccurate in a month and obsolete in three.
If you're willing to pay upwards of $20 for a handsome-looking strategy guide, you might as well just print out any references you need from the various FFXI forums and wikis. Saves you money and you can at least verify how accurate/inaccurate and recent the info is yourself. In the end, that'll give you a lot less headaches and a fuller wallet.
P.S. Another huge source of enmity in this thread was due to the Brady Games strategy guide printed a couple of years back. It was so bad, it took almost two years to dispel some of the bullshit that circulated among the english-speaking community thanks to it. Because of that, nobody wants to see another FFXI strategy guide be made. Ever.
I hope you have a pleasant FFXI experience, and don't be afraid to ask questions around here. The replies won't be as bad as the ones in this thread were.Last edited by Armando; 10-21-2007, 04:07 PM.
