Actually, no. PLD are about right. NIN are a bit too good. And multiple people with Utsusemi passing hate back and forth so the monster never gets to actually hit anyone is freaking ridiculous.

NINs are good as they should be (as all jobs should be), especially being such an expensive job, and PLD needs to take less damage when they have the best gear for their level, cause being overshadowed by NINs is what's ridiculous, not because NIN are good, but because SE doesn't PLDs as good as they should be.
with PLD damage dealing is pathetic as it is, they should be able to last longer against ITs and take in even less damage as a tank would be tough enough.
Mobs are super soaked with toughness that no wonder they are kicking ass left and right, parties are hard-pressed to not accept anything but the best party combinations and even then it's a downhill struggle even you don't have the best combos of jobs in the party, which rarely happens unless people are resourceful or in the right time and place. Anyways, hits from mobs are already devastating as it is, stuff like Utsusemi are welcome advantages the community desperately needs to have a better fighting chance.
Making the jobs better at what they do would really open up more flexibility in the types of parties people end up with without depending on the ultimate setups to get the job done.
Also SE should make some drops more valuable/better stats cause why would people camp for hours/days for a sword like Save the Queen, for example, which is a lottery drop, and the NM doesn't always spawn after you killthe placeholder countless times, when there are lv.65 swords that are better and easier to get?
useless drops like that should get an upgrade and much better stats that actually mean something and far more useful. Well anyways I could rant about how nerfed some jobs and gear are for the most part, but SE could really make things more rewarding and fun if they were generous enough to improve what needs improving instead of gimping everything that should have been more effective.
Well if it makes you feel any better (or worse heh), the new JP rumor is that a new job called Wrestler/Viking will be introduced as the new tank job

PLD damage is far from pathetic, it's very solid. Not doing triple digits on an average swing, or 4 figures on a Weapon Skill is not indicative of weakness.
Granted, PLD could use some extra tools for mitigation, or DEF/VIT could stand retooling, but they perform as they are intended: to take the brunt of the mob's aggression... but not without help. That help comes in the form of party support, or from the fellow melee occasionally taking hate for a breather.

Ok it's late and I'm goofy but when I saw wrestler I thought "how are they going to keep hate?" Figure eight leg locks?? Body slams?? And we have subligar already *shudders* please PLEASE no spandex!!! LOL
It's funny though I was just talking on vent about the new jobs as I was going to the forums and I mentioned Viking. Never thought in a million years anyone else would think that though! LOL

...I'm shitting dicks out of my eyeballs in excitement for the next bestgreating game of all time ever.
Grrr, I can't find it anywhere for some reason but I know 1UP had an interview with them (pretty sure it was 1UP anyway) and they said that wings would only deal with the original 30 areas of the game, and they wouldn't say anything about Tavnazia.
I'm quite sure that they actually said something subtly different -- that WotG would have 30 areas and that this is the same number of areas the original game had. I read this as meaning that it will mostly overlap with the original areas, but may not necessarily wholly overlap; some less plot-important areas like Crawler's Nest may be left out in favor of areas that it doesn't really make much sense to leave out like Tavnazia.
If it was performing as it should be, NIN wouldn't be tanking.
.
ah that's not the case, if party's can help it, healers would rather save their MP for emergencies. why heal a tank that can't avoid taking hits when they can have their NIN tank and rarely get hit at all. Ya as PLD I been there and NIN always get the advantage with their shadows and all, saves the party a great deal of trouble and risks in case the healer isn't doing their job.
But even /war's berzerk isn't enough to give PLD a decent DD role in a party if NIN takes over the tank role. One can't help but feel like a 5th wheel in parties like that. Why oh why did they nerf Holy, a once legendary magic spell.
but anyways about the 30 areas, yes it's possible the past will have some areas closed off, and new areas opened up. That's the most possible way to introduce brand new areas within Tavnazia.

That's the point: there shouldn't be any tanks that "rarely get hit at all". That means the game is broken, the monsters aren't fighting back effectively, you aren't doing anything but watching them die. No wonder people think exping is a boring grind: they don't have to *do* anything to succeed at it. Except spam Utsusemi.
If you've ever been in a party of good players that are fighting something that you have to be awake to beat, you'd never want to go back to TP burns... unless you got double the exp/hr that way, of course. Then it's kind of hard not to choose effective over fun, and even harder to get 5 other people to join you in that choice.

I'd agree that Utsusemi from /NIN is too strong, to the point of being broken, but tanking on Utsusemi isn't as easy as you make it sound. Utsusemi tanking was an interesting innovation, and takes good deal of concentration and skill for a player looking to find the optimal balance between damage output and safety for party.
That tanking should not more be nerfed out of existence than PLD tanking. Taking it out would leave FFXI a poorer experience with less diversity.
If anything, I rather see limited adjustment to tame Utsusemi (low skill compared to monster's accuracy makes it closer to Blink, as in sometimes critters can hit through it, for example), and have S-E add new forms of tanking.
Say, instead of tanking one T-IT critter at a time, how about handling multiple EP-EM monsters? It'd have to be based on job abilities and un-interruptible spells (like songs), and damage mitigation that's effective against lower level opponents but not higher level ones.
I think a brawl style of partying would open up new opportunities for Black Mages (-ga nuking!) and a good reason to boost AoE weapon skills. (A useful Circle Blade, anyone? )
Heck, they can convert some attack and enfeeb BPs for Summoner to AoE to help them earn party slots other than healer.
Different styles of exp'ing is good thing, and more would be better--as long as they give comparable exp/hour with reasonably good party configurations (tailored to each style). To achieve that would probably require an overhaul to the exp rewards and adjustment/nerf to melee outputs of players, though.
The thin hope of a new partying style is why I'm wishing for a new tank job... Unless S-E brings a job which enables a new way of getting exp in parties, I'd rather they don't bother to give us new jobs, and stick to stories and mini-games.
Except for Dancer--my Mithra would look great in the AF...

As far as ninjas are concerned, there's nothing broken about using shadows to confuse the enemy so much that they will keep failing at hitting the ninja, I mean if there was a flaw in Utsusemi besides the limited shadows, it would seriously nerf NIN and would defeat the point of even having Utsusemi if they can't maintain tanking since NIN can't take damage as good as PLD, and what if you don't have a PLD or WAR in the party, what then? and if you do have a tank, what would a NIN serving as DD do with something as useless as Utsusemi for attacking? utsusemi is self defense and that's a tanking quality.
People want a 3rd tank, yet NIN is in fact a welcome substitution, they have saved so many parties from nasty defeat and wasted time.
well back to WoG, this new job news seems shocking, if this Gladiator/Wrestler/Viking job is in fact a new tank, that might be interesting what style it will use that differentiates itself from stuff like WAR.
And I think you-know-who might end up having to eat a hat after all.

Hey guys I apologize if this has been said already, but as I was watching the trailer of Wings, at the end with the scene of Atomos, I could have sworn I saw Stray. Perhapse he will be a new summon in Wings? Did anyone else notice him?
