wait wait, not to defend FFXIapp or anything, but since when was it fact that he does not pay taxes on this little side business of his? In a legal form, his app does nothing illegal, there for he should have nothing to worry about.

Like page 19 of the bg thread. I still think taj should get in trouble, it is just he isn't and idiot about who he hacks. If you hack someone who could have legal recourse taken back upon them there is less likely to be a trial. Not to mention the whole needing to prove it was him who hacked and that he did use "brute force" to hack into a website etc etc etc.

He will screw up/piss off the wrong person/get bored, and then it will be over. What helps it be over is just the fact of not making hundreds of pages of threads about him every time it comes up.

Brute Force attacks are so archaic it's sad that they work. Anyone's system that can be cracked into via a brute force method that wasn't being run by a super computer (ie, Taj probably has a home computer and/or a handful of other computers he uses in parallel to stage his attacks, and this is giving him the benefit of the doubt..) deserved to be exposed.

The whole cops arresting people for using Wi-Fi from their cars has more to do with... 1. Ignorant cops that think anyone with a laptop is a terrorist hacker. 2. Cops being unable to admit they're wrong. (Have you seen the video of the cop macing(sp?) the girl who he thought he gave a 20 but gave a 10? He maced her anyway even though he was proven to be wrong.) Now I'm not trying to bash cops, I have a few friends that are cops. There are just a few bad ones out there. Anyway this is off subject, but I don't think a real investigation would be as zealous as a random bully cop. P.S. Don't tase me bro.

Yes, but think, for a moment, about the trial aspect (assuming it gets that far) - people will want to know what this guy sells, and why the server was broken into in the first place - and lets face it, what he sells breaks the T&C of an established company, whatever you think of SE. I doubt he has declared taxes on the income, which in itself is illegal - the whole thing would have an impact on a jury. Just saying. Yes, Taj has gone too far - he did that with the server transfers, but frankly - I'm still laughing at the fact that people who broke the EULA got what they deserved.
With the impact FFXIApp has had on the game, it's very hard for me to have sympathy at that point.
FFXIApp is not a business as such - it is something a player has done on the side, and has made money out of it - that's the thing... If it were a business, IRS would be all over it.

that list says this side project earned in the area of 80,000$ in the last year and a half or so.



I'm willing to bet this was good old fashioned SQL injection - since it was supposed to only receive canned information from the app, I doubt he bothered to run any routines to sanitize the input.

Eventually anyone who consistantly steps outside the rules is going to get busted as a matter of the law of averages. He continues to hack eventually he'll get nailed. However I have to agree that your less likely to have the same level of diligence or harshness applied when your going after a "business" that is sleezy in nature (note: I use business since it is an enterprise designed to make money regardless of if it is a stock company buying/selling stock all the way down to organized crime running a protection racket).
Concievably there could be prosecution of both the hacker for illegal access of the database exc and the business itself for tax evasion, but I'm not laying odds on either hapening.

There was a mention of fruit of the poison tree earlier and I wanted to touch base on that. Legally that only applies to the efforts of law enforcement. For example if the officer gets a confession telling where to find a dead body, but it is ruled that the confession was illegally obtained then the dead body is fruit of a poisoned tree and not admissable. There is an exception if the current search pattern would have turned it up anyway. (Sorry I don't have the court case #'s for those 2 seperate cases it's been awhile since highschool criminal law). However if I were to break someones door down and when the police arrive to arrest me I knock over their dresser revealing bags of cocain I would goto jail for breaking and entering and police would seize and use the evidence against the home owner legally since they took no part nor coaxed me into the illegal activity. (Yes there would be arguments of if I put it there, it's not mine, exc ^..^)

Last note regarding if botters can be good people from an earlier post. It all depends what constitues a good or bad person. Is someone who hacks a bad person, someone who cheats on taxes, uses steriods in competative sports, someone who steals credit cards, exc? I think we all have character flaws and it's a matter of which ones are acceptable and where they are acceptable. In real life I'm hardly going to shun someone I know because they cheat in competative games like MMO's, but I sure as hell won't want to assosciate with them in that game or forums assosciated with that game. I think cheats should be for single player games only. Even then it realy spoils the game but your not affecting anyone else (just my thought )
