  • Nearing 25 and need airship advice...

I'm closing in on 25 on my first job and understand that to reach the prime hunting grounds I'll need to get the airship pass. Given that I don't have any money, much less 625,000 gil to outright buy the pass, it seems I'll need to do this the hard way. And while I'm conversant with the general details (get three keys for the Kahzam pass, get Rank 5 for the normal pass), I have no real idea what those actually entail.

I know I need a group to get past mission 2-3 and am preparing for that fight now by training up my skills, but I am clueless about how rough it'll be to get rank 4 and 5, or what needs to be done to get the three dungeon keys. Is it soloable, do I need a group? Any advice or other handy tips would be muchly appreciated.

Re: Nearing 25 and need airship advice...

The airship pass that requires rank 5 is just to travel from or to Jeuno from the starting cities and isn't really required to get to camping locations. What you need now is the Kazham pass. For that you need to collect the three keys from thier respective zones.

    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Kazham_Airship_Pass

That site has all the details you need. While it is soloable, it can get a little rough as all those mobs links and may yet be a little difficult for you to solo. Anyone level 40+ can easily handle them, a 75 can train an entire zone of them. Or a group of about 2-3 level 25ish players should be alright as long as thiers a mage of some sort to help curing.

Which server are you on? Perhaps someone here may be able to help you.

You will DEFINITELY need some high level friends. Remember to pay it forward when you are the "high level friend". Both passes need them. To kill the mobs to get the item drops for the kazam key, you'll need a high-level in your pt. You won't want to walk too far into the different zones, or you will get dead. The high-level will easily pewn the mobs and your pt will get the drops. You cast a lot on the needed items and you're done. Only hard part is finding the helpful high-level. I might suggest finding someone with a (M) Mentor symbol above their head, they seem to be quite helpful. For the Rank 5 / air-ship pass, Forget about it. LOL, JK, but seriously, forget it. You will need a high-level to drag you around for two days getting you to rank 5. 3-2 to rank 5 needs two level 75 friends and you will still die 3-5 times doing it. Or, after you get your Kazam pass, you will have plenty access to getting into the 50s in level. Try doing air ship pass and other crap until then... GL!!!

I don't think that high level help is required to aquire the kazham keys. The mobs that drop the keys are around level 21-25. These would essential be even matches. A high-level friend in this case is anyone that wouldn't get aggro from them (basically 35+).

Sure it's quicker to have a 75 train 50 of them, and just kill them with one spell (gogo 75 blm!) but I duoed with this with a 40pld and myself as a 23 whm. And it's really only quicker if you have someone that you could ask to help you with it. But if you have a couple of buddies your level that are willing to go with you, it's perfectly feasable to get this done without higher level help.

Remember at some point there were no 75s, there was no wiki, there was nothing but a Bradey guide and the NPC description to guide you.

For the rest of the missions...

2-3 I believe is a level 25 capped BCNM with a dragon and an eye mob. Soloable by several jobs, but as a new player I don't expect you to have the gil to achieve this or the skill yet to pull it off. A party of 3 or 4 people can easily to his. Mnk's two hour, hundred fist, is really powerful here, and a pld's 2hr invincible is a great help.

The rank missions after that I can't recall all that much, but I know one requires killing a giga in Defaulk's tower (sp?). I duoed this as 40whm and a 40 nin. Of course a few more people would of been helpful, but it's doable.

The killer mission for the main airpass is 4-2. It's not difficult at all, just looooooooooooong. I soloed most of this as a 50ish whm. There are two NMs that you need to kill and the rest is sneaking by lots of mobs. The 2 NMs can be handled by a party of 40s with ease if you take time to remove links first. Then it's a matter of having sneak potions, prism powders, timing and luck to accomplish.

That being said, I do commonly help people with these things, and I am proud to say that I've yet to have a newbie die on me. Drops for the key is simple, just a matter of luck on the drop. 4-1 usually takes less than 2 hours. The key here is to find the newbies that know how to help themselves. There is no excuse for not reading up on the mission before hand and having the cutscenes done before heading out. Then it's just a matter of walking said newbie where they need to go, and that they know how to listen.

I will not help people that request help like this:
Newb: can you help with 4-1?
Me: Sure, got the CS done?
Newb: no lol, who i talk to lol?
Me: Well print the mission of wiki and talk to the NPCs, then send me a tell.
Newb: lol ur 75, u dont now what u did? lol
        Me: ...

Help those that know how to help themselves. If you can't take the time to prepare for something then why should I spend my time to help you. There is nothing in it for me except the satisfaction of helping a fellow player. It does however take my time, and when someone is asking you to sacrifice of yourself they should be more than willing to put in some leg work as well.

I agree that Lower-lv people definitely need to do their homework before asking Higher-lvs to help.
Two lv 25 RDMs can't duo the Skull you will need though, I tried it. Its really better to be in an LS with someone 50-75 lv willing to help people. Tipping is acceptable too!

You definately don't need high level help for the Kazham keys. I recall getting all 3 keys with a friend. We were both Lv. 25 WARs. But it won't hurt to have a little more help along.

These days, you might *need* a high level for the Kazham keys, but only because there aren't too many low level first timers about these days. However, a party of 3 level 25s can get all 3 keys. When I started just after the PS2 release, I was a WAR/MNK at lvl 25, and farmed the 3 keys with two lvl 25 RDM friends.

So this can be done without seeking high level hand holding.

My server's Midgardsormr, and I agree about not helping the lazy and unprepared. I try to avoid being a burden or a leech on the high-level folks who've kindly helped me out, but in situations like this with places I've never been to kill or bypass monsters I've never seen, my inexperience would be a problem for anyone helping me.

Re: Nearing 25 and need airship advice...

What they're saying about not being a problem is things like know what mobs drop what you want, have a map of the area(s) you're going through either in game or from ffxi-atlas.com and have a general idea from them where you're going. Know what the mission/quest entails by finding information on it. Have all the prerequisites (that you can) done. Things like that. If you've done that, there's no reason to think of yourself as a burden or a problem.

Decent help is going to know you might not have seen these things or that you've never been there and things like that. What you don't want to be doing is:

Well I'm on Ifrit, but I believe there are a few Midgar people on the forums, perhaps they'll stop by this thread and offer a helping hand. You sound more than knowledgable with the resources available to you, so hopefully you'll find someone to snag for a bit and knock those keys out.

Another option perhaps while waiting around for someone to help, try leveling a few other jobs. If you're a melee type person, try leveling thf, mnk war and such while waiting on a buddy to be available; or if you're of the magey persuasion blm, rdm or whm. You'll appreciate having a start on these subs in higher levels when you need them. All the time your collecting sellable drops and beastman seals to use later down the road.

If you have no luck finding someone here to help, perhaps someone lurking in your LS (if you have one) could help. Or perhaps mention in passing in an exp party that you're still trying to get your kazham airpass. Usually you'll find that at least one party member has a job that can handle them and wouldn't mind lending a helping hand.

Best of luck to you. <(^.^)>
