  • Benchmark 4 (Where?)

Up until CoP SE released a new Benchmark with every expansion, but I guess they thought it would be redundant with Aht Urgan so they skipped it. Now, with the new DX9 update and an epic expansion like WotG seems to be I'm wondering if they will release a new Benchmark for the new DX9 PC client.

The kinda things I'd like to see on a new Benchmark are:

    -Widescreen support.
-High resolution test upgrade to 1360x768 (maybe up to 1920x1080?)
-All the enhancements I would like from an XI emulation engine upgrade (I know it's unlikely) like AA support, longer drawing distance etc.
-Other things I can't think of right now since I'm falling asleep.

So, what do you guys think?

Damn right, because it seems players UI seem to enjoy the game more, so a test for wine/beer vs fun ratio would be very useful. /nod

Man I'm falling asleep, seriously though, seeing there's an increasing number of apps becoming compatible it would be nice if someone made XI compatible (although yeah, the chances of SE doing that are close to Zero).

I don't know much about WINE as you probably noticed.

lol....now why would they put things in the benchmark that the game does not support.... the whole point of the benchmark is to show you how well your PC will work with FFXI,

If SE hasn't forgot about it, there will probably be a new one to test compatibility with the DX9 engine.

You didn't get it, XI does support widescreen overlay resolutions, it's just the background res is set at a max of 1024 x 1024 in all cases (unless you edit the registry of course).

If they are making a new Benchmark for the new DX9 client they might as well add a widescreen option since those displays are way more popular nowadays.

Man I really hope they make a good Benchmark with WotG scenes and stuff.

Edit > I liked Zilart's Bench more than CoP's but they are both nice to watch from time to time.

                Re: Benchmark 4 (Where?)

Since 1360x768 isn't a standard VESA mode and won't be supported by a lot of monitors, I don't see that as becoming the High resolution on a High/Low switch like previous benchmarks have used. Anything over 1024x768 would pose compatibility issues with older, smaller DFPs as well.

That said, I do think the benchmarks would be more useful if you could configure most if not all of the same options for them as you can for FFXI's video and audio.

As for WINE support, that's kind of a joint issue in a sense. WINE's developers are responsible for how much of the DX9 interface gets implemented. An application developer considering targeting WINE can help this work by using the most well-documented parts of the interface in a way that is fully in line with the documented specs. A lot of the real headaches in supporting native Win32 apps in WINE are reproducing bugs and undocumented behavior that these apps come to depend on.

In other words, a clean, well-designed program written by programmers using good coding practices is a lot more likely to work in WINE than a patchwork piece of legacy code.

wrong. If SE cared, they could easily either make a WINE wrapper for FFXI, or help the WINE devs solve the problems, change parts of their code that cause it to crash in WINE, etc. It's not like there aren't other companies out there doing this.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant, but didn't really explain it in detail.

Even the usual low/high options plus a widescreen checkbox would do the job, but being able to choose the overlay res the same way you do in the XI config would be much better.

If you want something to run on a system it wasn't made for under a wrapper that no one supports, then yes your beef is with the wine devs.

If it was economical (it's not) to put the effort into making FFXI run on Linux, the effort would have been put into it running natively, not under some half baked intermediary.

Mhurron: And again, no. If SE wanted to, they could work with WINE, be that with the devs or the code, to make FFXI work in it (and I'm not just talking about linux, I'm talking about anything WINE runs on)

There's already plenty of work on WINE, and some very good signs that FFXI could run under it fairly well if not for a few problems, which SE could help iron out if they cared. We all know SE is never going to put in the effort to make a good version of FFXI from the ground up again, however helping the WINE devs to fix the problems that exist, or again doing it themselves, is more than possible, and is not anything terribly creative or farfetched.

                          Re: Benchmark 4 (Where?)

Problem is even if SE could help with the little details to make the game run they are also supporting both Windows and X360.

And given how MS has blocked WINE in the past I doubt it would sit well with them if SE started helping WINE devs. Or they could simply not care, either of.

When has MS 'blocked' WINE? either way, obviously any company helping with WINE development would also be working on PC, so that's not a problem, MS can't control that platform. They might be able to control 360, but last I heard 360 hasn't done shit for SE, and it's not like FFXI hasn't been screwed over by a console manufacturer before.

I heard some time ago that some MS updates were messing with WINE. But from what I just read on Wiki it says it was a registry check when trying to update, so I guess that only applied to updates for MS products working under WINE.
