Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

Ragnarok was just a stupid, endless grind with sub-par PvP.

Welcome to FFXI by the way. Feel free to ask anything ^^b

Just in case you don't already know, unlike in WoW you only need one character, and you won't need to jump from server to server either when others are down or filled to capacity. You make your one guy (more if you really, really want to but it'll cost an extra $1.00 per) and do all your quests and leveling etc on that character.

You can change between all 18 jobs at any time in your mog house, but you only start with 6 and have to unlock the rest. There's a new expansion out in a month too with more jobs and goodies ^^b so it's a pretty good time to be a new player I figure.

If you want to see Skillchain in action, it's one of the section here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/newplayer/index.html
        Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
        yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

As for Jobs, Abilities, and Spells, go to this page
            http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Jobs
and click on the job (there will also be much more information for the job). You can even click on the ability, trait, spell, etc. If its a spell it will tell you where to find the scroll (of course all can be found on the Auction House, but these show where they are originally found such as npc store, drop, etc).

Just to nitpick, distortion is Tachi: Enpi first, then Fast Blade (or another Scission WS). Skillchains are nice, but the REALLY nice thing is when you have a mage that can cast the corresponding spell for a Magic Burst (extra damage, less resists).

#always know where the zone is and don't be afraid to run close to zone to fight.
if it's not going your way- quickly zone to stay alive.
#know what links and how the mobs aggro (detect you)

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

                    Here's another good one.

                    - Research your job and if you're a melee class, find out what your A rated weapons are! I, like most people leveled WAR without knowing the glory of axes or great axes. Luckily I found it in the mid 20's and immediately switched to great axe!

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

I remember starting WAR with a Great Sword in Nov. '03. My accuracy was crap, so I changed to Sword /laugh. I think I was starting PLD before I learned about ranks in weapons. Wish I would have known about Great Axe and Shield Break (+20% hit rate for everyone).

Earlier you mentioned you have a friend who just started playing. If you want to play together you should join his server or maybe talk him into choosing another one.

To add to "what I didn't know when I joined", if you can afford an extra 2$ a month I would recommend creating a character in each of the 2 cities that are not your home city. You can use them as extra storage, and more importantly have access to their respective AH's. Bastok, San d'Oria, and Windurst have seperate AH's, and item value in one city may be different from another. Certain items you get from mobs in say South Gustaberg (a bastok zone) will sell for more gil in Windurst for example.

You will have access to more weapon and armor npc's from the different cities, as well as some gear/items that are only available to characters from whichever nation is in first/second place of the Conquest standings. As an example take a look at this link to an npc in San d'Oria. http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Ashene

Welcome to FFXI, hopefully you enjoy your stay .

Always great to see new players who actually want to know how to play well.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them either here, or @ Allakhazam, and you'll usually get good information (from the majority of people anyway.)

side-note: Do you know who your avatar is of? wont spoil it either way ^^.
