  • job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

hi, im pretty new the the FFXI community, so i dont know any of the language of people who play FFXI, for example in WOW the auction house is AH, i also no thats what it is in FFXI, but thats the only thing i know, im sure i will catch on when i play more.

    Anyways to my questions,

what is the difference between job abilities and job traits ?

and also how do u get wepon skills ?

thank you in advance to any replys

    and good luck playing FFXI

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

A job ability is something you use. IE you use Provoke to get the monsters attention.
A job trait is something that just is. IE BLM has Clear Mind at X level, that means starting at level X BLM just heals a little more MP when resting. They didn't use it, it just happens.

Most weapon skills you just learn them as you hit the level needed to use it. A sword user for instance learns Burning Blade at sword skill level 50 (iirc). You'll get a little message Y learned Burning Blade.

There are special quested weapon skills, but those are the last weapon skills for that weapon and you'll know all this by the time you have to worry about that.

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

One thing to add to Mhurron's post is that you can learn a Weapon Skill (WS) but not actually be able to use it. I was so confused about this when I first started playing. I received a message saying I learned the Weapon Skill Flaming Arrow, but couldn't use it. So I kept looking for the super special menu that allowed me to use Flaming Arrow, only to find out later that I could only use it if I sub'd RNG or was a RNG.

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

You have to buy scrolls of spells, which let you learn that spell if you're the right job and level.

You don't have to buy skills, unless someone was misunderstanding the Merit system. If it was merits you are thinking of that is something you don't have to worry about until you have a job at lvl75 and by that time, you'll already have an idea or know where to find the exact information you need.

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

A job ability is something that you can use that either grants you a beneficial effect or does damage/cause effect to a monster.

For example, warrior gets the job abilities Provoke and Berserk. Provoke you can use every 30 seconds, you use it on the monster and it causes you to go higher on the hate list. Tank jobs use this ability to keep the mob focused on them and not hit the other party members.

Berserk you use on yourself, and has a cool down timer of 5 minutes and the effect last for 3 minutes. While the effect is in place your attack will increase while defense is weakend. You'll do more damage, but also take more damage while berserk is up.

Job traits are always active. Using war again they get the job traits Double attack and resist virus. Double attack will make you occasionally attack twice in an attack round, while resist virus will make it harder for mobs to stick virus on you, or it will last shorter than normal.

You'll learn more job abilities and traits as you progress in levels. Most times you'll get them at intervals of 5 levels (level 5, 10, 15, 20 et cetera). Difference is Abilities you use and are on a timer, while traits are always active.

You have probably noticed that while you attack things with your weapon you get messages like "Siwarz sword skill raises .01", or what ever weapon type you're using. Once you have enough skill points in a weapon you'll learn a weaponskill for that weapon type. For example, once you have 10 skill points in sword you'll learn 'Fast Blade'

However, you only get 3 skill points make per level (for the early levels at least), so you won't learn a weaponskill (WS) till level 4 and you've used your sword enough to get 10 skill points.

Once you've learned the WS, as you hit mobs you'll notice that you gain TP, once your TP is over a 100%, you can select that weapon skill from the combat menu > abilities > weaponskills. These are kind of like an extra attack, miss less often, and usually do more damage.

You can check what your current weapon skill points are at by going to menu > profile > combat skills. If you see a blu number, that means your skill is at it's max for your level (which is a good thing)

              nice ty for that info

EDIT: do wepon skills add combo's ? i read somewere that if you use wepon skill, then party member uses theres in less than a minute thats a chain, and its continuous with other team mates if they use 1 in a minute.

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

Well that's not quite right, but you're close.

Certain weapon skills chain together to make a Skillchain, which will add a bit of damage, and has a cool effect on the screen, lol. They have to use their weapon skill about 2-5 seconds after yours, it's not too hard to watch for theirs and do yours right after, and most parties will set up warnings before they weapon skill.

But remember, it's only certain ones that work with certain others. For example, if someone used the sword weapon skill Fast Blade, and right afterwards, someone used the great katana weapon skill Tachi:Enpi, it would make a skillchain called Distortion, that is water/ice damage.

Once you get to Valkurm Dunes and practice that a bit, you'll start to understand it a bit better than I can explain it. :D

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D

maybe when i play more, i will understand alot more things, ive only wattched my friend play it for a while, so i dont know that much, but neither does he, he is not that high lvl, im waiting for my game to come to my house, should be on monday-tuesday. so il probably install it and play next day depending on how long it takes to set up etc.

all im trying to do is learn as much as i can before i play.

im glad i read about that spell of the guards that let u find crystals, good money making at lower levels, and can be good for higher lvls 2

                      yeah thank you

if there is any server that you would recommend, please do.
i dont mind if its populated or medium, but not into the low populated servers.

As ive read through the rest of the forums ive seen many nice friendly people.

it took me a while to sign up for the forums though, since i didnt no the answer to some of the questions and i kept getting the code wrong, even though i thought i was getting it right..

but ah well im on now =)

Re: job abilities / job traits / wepon skills

There is a LS being made for this forum on Kujata, I believe. And there was a post around here about which server had the most people from this forum..

But aside from that, pretty much all servers are ok. There used to be a TON of people from Midgardsormr here, but they also disappeared.

yeah i was on the server section and Midgardsormr and Ragnarok are highly populated with posts lol, lets just hope that ragnarok server is betta than the ragnarok game haha.

( sarcasm, ofc it is , Ragnarok sucks ^^ )

A LOT of the "old school" FFXI players are/were on Ragnorok, because that server had a high english base when the game first came out in Japan. But since the game has been out in America for like a kajillion years, you'll find English speaking players anywhere, so there isn't a "need" to go to one server or another.

Kujata might be your best bet, just for the simple fact that there are people who would be willing to enjoy watching your character grow and learn new things.

i mite just pick server randomly, then just start, if i dont like it i can just change anyways so it doesnt really matter, as long as i have fun playing the game, nothing much matters.
