But having that content deleted and the user temp-banned from posting more is. Apparently it's not an idle threat so I assume they'll stick to their guns and prevent copypasta...at least while it get's up and running.

As a lot of people have been saying lately..."Say anything other than "BG IS SO GREAT OMG GUYZ!!!" or "YOU DARE GO AGAINST INFO ON BG!!?!?" You'll get flack for it."

It's interesting they decided to start their own wiki...even though all wikis eventually have the same information.

that can work on a small scale, not a large scale, especially if this gets the sort of steam they're hoping for.

The problem with copyright violations on the wiki isn't the 99 you catch, it's the 1 you miss.

But are they so against it for legal reasons or is it because they're doing a 'we don't want their info' type of thing? If it's the fomor then they'd most likely be asked to take down said copypasta before any lasting damage is done, but if it's the fomor then the only thing to be affected would be their own pride in a sense. Either way, even if the 1 does get through I don't see it causing any major problems.

              You sir have been whoooooshed.

Talk all the shit on BG if you have a good reason. But discrediting info because they have elitist opinions is far from correct. BG site forums have a good share of drama, as does alla, but to say a database will be full of that is not always correct. Most of us who have chose to contribute to BG only have gotten shit from people saying we are wrong to not contribute to both. These are the same people who hate BG. Many of the info on BG is called out on that site and tested, the issue in this thread was calling out the wiki, which we just started. Personal grudge =/= Info is wrong. Back to editing the wiki.

Yes that is the problem with any user edited database, FFXI wiki is a copy paste of somepage, alla, bg threads. I am more impressed they are attempting to keep it non-copy and paste.

Of course, so is somepage, alla, KI and BluGartr. Other then opinions, by the time the information becomes popular it has all been copied numerous times.

                  Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

Information has been, is and will be copied around.

Wether the site really works or not will be decided by the amount of accurate info available, how well organized it is, and how fast it is updated after new content is added and maybe how good their community is (for the forums section).

All the conflicts and other stuff surrounding the sites will be ignored by the majority of the community like it always happens.

It's just a matter of waiting and seeing how it turns out.

                    Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

exactly, Sev, thinking that BG wiki is the ONE PLACE where people won't take from other resources is like thinking that you live in the ONE TOWN where there's never any crimes.

ANY good wiki tries to keep their site legal so they don't get shut down, or have to deal with giant licensing headaches later on (finding out your article is copyrighted and having to rewrite everything from teh ground up is a huge pain)

Like I said earlier though, the problem isn't in the ones you catch, it's the ones you don't.

                      Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

I think you'll find none of the non-talk or forum pages on ffxiclopedia have a genuine claim to being owned by the user who wrote the page.

Copyright issues just aren't really a problem for game content wikis.

I noticed late last night that it had gone live. I'm excited to see how it goes, even if that does make me a mongoloid idiot.

                          Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

Alot of stuff will probably look copied from ffxiclo anyways since BG members made the initial contributions.

The general BG population is full of elitist flamers(those who flame, not homosexuals), however they have very good mods and admins for the most part. If someone like Sonomaa says that the wiki will be as free as possible from the normal BG slant, I'll take their word for it.

BG wiki will likely be a great resource for endgame info, especially game mechanics. I don't plan on using their forums again because I just plain don't like most of the posters on their, but I don't doubt I'll be using the wiki, and that it will be useful.

Of course, that would be a "flaming elitist"

You know, I didn't think of it like this before, but after recalling the rather low forum activity of FFXIclopedia is, BG Wiki could eventually serve to smother their forums out of any level of relevance. That would be a good thing in general.

Heck, I know I never used the FFXIC forums. The BG forums should be just as easy to avoid.
