11:54 AM CST: What about next gen? FFXI looks outdated compared to newer products, which is why Square Enix has been working on a completely new MMORPG for the Xbox 360.
No PS3 or PC mentioned. Ouch. T_T

"FFXI looks horribly outdated because we made it for a console that was at the top of it's league when we were making it. Because FFXI is so outdated from the limitations of that console, we're working on a new MMO for the 360."

They sure did learn; the "outdated" MMORPG, 5 years later, has 500,000 subscribers and is nearly a $100 million/year revenue source (before counting unit sales and expansion pack sales).

That's no WoW, but still a winner in any accountant's book.

S-E's game division is about console gaming. Love or hate it, but it does console well.

I'm convinced that SE has a learning disability...

Had they just gone PC from the get go for FF we wouldn't have these issues >. <

Oh well. It's an asian MMO. WoW is an American one made by one of the most successful developers out there. It's no wonder WoW is blowing FF out of the water in terms of subscriptions (SE could probably learn something from them)

On the other hand, it keeps most of the retards out :3

Blizzard is only successful because of World of Warcraft and Korea. America has had little to do with it until WoW, and even then we're only one market of many they've applied themselves to.

Korea has a hard-on for boring games that don't go anywhere.

I'll take my niche product and like it. More popular doesn't necessarily mean better. In some cases it means distinctly worse.

So long as SE learns its gameplay and programming lessons from FFXI and applies them to the next product I could really care less what else. To be honest, it hasn't really even been the "can't fix because of PS2" problems with FFXI that have bothered me.

True, but back when I first joined Seraph topped out at just under 5000 people during prime time.

                    Now we're lucky to break 1700. That really blows ; ;

... There were already plenty of MMORPG competitors in the PC space. If not for PS2 launch of FFXI, this game probably would have flopped, like Fantasy Earth.

THE DECISION TO LAUNCH ON PS2 DESERVES A LION'S SHARE OF CREDIT FOR FFXI's SUCCESS.

It boggles my mind that players keep thinking "FFXI would've been so much better without PS2", when it's much more likely FFXI would've been nothing more than a minor footnote in gaming history if not for PS2.

I don't know that that's entirely fair. I think FFXI would still have done rather well because of the Final Fantasy name. Everyone that I know that started playing played for that reason. Not because of the PS2 (not that there aren't a shitload of people who joined for the PS2 or 360 reason).

There are a ton of MMOs in the PC only realm out there (and more every day), but that doesn't mean that FFXI wouldn't have still stood out because of it's gameplay and setting.

PC gamers and thier epeen. RTS and MMORPGs are all you have left, and even that is now in question. There are RTS and Korean MMOs going to the Nintendo DS, for Christ's sake!

Making FFXI exclusive to PC would have been the biggest MMO mistake since EQ's Kunark expansion and the forced processor upgrade. You don't take a franchise and move it to another audience or force upgrades on them.

SE got away with it once, but I don't think gamers would have been as forgiving with FFXI as they were with FFVII.

Well, we'll never really know, will we? It's entirely speculation, and I doubt we'll ever have an opportunity to see a repeat of an MMO launch from SE that's only on the PC.

edit: Also, putting a statement that you don't want anyone to disagree with in caps and bold is just assholish. It doesn't make you any more right. It just makes you look like a jerk.

I never said it would have been the best idea, just that we wouldn't be dealing with the hardware limitations is all.

Pros and Cons, simple as that unfortunately.
