Re: What do you want to see in the DX9 upgrade?
Indeed, I've been hearing good things about the recent DirectX progress, even though I haven't tested a WINE release in some time. Meaning to, but never quite get to it since I've already found native equivalents for Windows programs I use (before FFXI, the main thing was a couple WinAmp plugins, Highly Experimental and SnesAmp, which I've replaced with xmms plugins sexyspc and sexypsf (with slight modifications to the source).
That said, I don't know what kind of shape the nVidia proprietary drivers are in on Linux. Until recently, I've used an ATI Radeon 8500 which was well-supported under DRI with free software drivers. I've just made a new system with a GeForce 7600 GT KO, and as yet I don't have any 3D accel installed (most likely I'll copy my X install since it's in /opt/xorg-7.2 anyway, installing DRI and Nouveau on one copy for testing and putting the nVidia libGL on the other, switching on a softlink). Hopefully things aren't too bad, as even on this fast a system I shudder to think how it'd run FFXI under pure Mesa with no direct rendering at all.
