2 Newbs Joining FFXI From WoW
So my 2 copies of the 07' Vana'diel Collection arrive here tomorow for me and an IRL friend of mine. We were hardcore WoW players from launch till now part of guilds who finished almost all the current content to date. I am a previous raid leader so im a decent MMO player (at least I think so). Anyways im a big time FF fan (have a tattoo of Sephiroth on my back, make fun of me if you like) so I think I will enjoy FFXI. I understand that its a completely different game from WoW, and im not here to get flamed by "zomg wow is for nubs lawl" posts. Mostly im just looking for some pointers on starting up. I think I will be starting with Warrior into Dark Knight (always loved Dark Knight in FF games) and I think my friend is going either Monk or Black Mage into something else. I printed the new player guides off these forums and we will read them but was just wondering things like what server to play on and such. Also since were both registering at the same time can I refer him to play and get one of those bonus items I read about? Not exactly sure how it works. Anyways thats it for now if you want to talk to me you can AIM me or can even come chat on my vent with me and my friend. The game used to feature items called "World Passes", which contained codes you could use to get your friends on your server when they created their character.
Since the game allows you to choose a server when you create a character now, world passes are defunct, but Gold World Passes still exist and work in the same manner.
When you start playing, go to the governmental district of your city (Metalworks in Bastok, Chateau d'Oraguille in San d'Oria, and Heaven's Tower in Windurst) and you can purchase a Gold World Pass for about 1,000 gil. Your friend can use the code in the Gold World Pass to create his character, and you'll begin to get special items as a reward in your Moghouse delivery boxes. The longer both of you stay subscribed to the game, the better the prizes will be.

If you want to get those extra items, yes.
It won't take too long either. You'll have gained a level or two by then from killing the monsters for their drops to sell on the auction house, but big deal. (it's either that or ask someone for 1000 gil to pay for the pass. Generally speaking players hate being begged for money though)Comment

It's too there simply isn't the technology (at least to my understanding) to have just one massive server for all subscribers...
But then areas would be horribly flooded I suppose unless they were greatly expanded. Hell, we only get to see a fraction of the cities as it stands.Comment

I have to say, whenever i see "wow player joining FFXI" i just have to say, "you aren't going to last long in this game". Of course, i can be wrong.
Just note 3 things to your success.
1. Don't brother to talk to every NPC in the city. And always upgrade your armor whenever possible during range of soloing level. (it reduce death and xp loss)
2. Research the game, use website information as much possible, FFXI never directly tell you what to do.
3. always be polite, never /shout garbages and find yourself a linkshell ASAP.-add later-Comment

I will definitly take you up on this. Your realm decent in size? Tomorow its coming so today im trying to find links to patches and what not to speed up the installation. I don't think you'll find any torrents or outside sources to patch the game, so while you'll get your game tomorrow, don't count on starting till the day after. Not to mention the game is updating today, so even more stuff to update.Originally posted by Flayed View Post

midgardsomr is a pretty small server (i am not saying it is bad, my old character sleep in midgardsomr), if you are new, i really suggest you go to Asura or http://www.ffxiah.com/data.php any of the listed.
I know that Asura seem the be the best and mostly english players based server.-add later-Comment

No that is not me and I tried to post a link to my tattoo but I can't post URL's yet it says in the above post. Anyways probably going to Midgardsormr so I can start off with the gold pass for me and my buddy. Asura seems like a better choice due to the population and majority of US players but I don't want to make my friend wait for me to make 1,000 gil just so he can start playing. Midgard used to be a large server, but 2 server splits and player retirements have made it into a smaller server. It is relatively new of all the servers (It's one of 6 "newer" servers) and also has a large % of JP players.
Hades is the newest (One of 3) and has a large % of NA/EU players. The economy here is boring (Meaning it is relatively stable)
Average population is roughly 2,400 players and about 2,800 players at peak times.
