Re: Coming back after about 3 years.. Need help! ><

Ok, so I finally got started playing last night.. so far I'm having a lot of fun, but I got a few problems/questions.

When I started playing, I decided that I was going to go for a Paladin.. but now I'm not so sure.

I have the offical guide thing that I bought years ago when I played the first time. I never really used it for quests 'cuz that takes all the fun out of the game. I used it so I would know what kind of spells and what certain classes get.
My problem is that I dont know if I want to be a Paladin 'cuz I don't know anything about all these new Adv. Classes like Blue Mage and stuff...

I've tried looking for a newer guide, but it looks like they havnt made any since 2003.

Does anyonw know where I can go to see things like what kind of spells these new classes get, and what role they play?

Also, I'm playing on the Ifrit server and I really dont see very many people around. The most I've seen at the San d'Oria AH at one time was like 7 or 8 people...
Is it just because its a lowbie area, or should I try to find a more populated server before I get too high of level?

There arn't many published guides, but www.ffxiclodpedia.com has EVERYTHING about ffxi. Fairly easy to search through the site, and very well organized in my opinion. Just type what you're looking for in the search bar and it comes up with results. Works for quest, jobs, missions, items, and crafting.

EDIT: If you're unsure about what to level, you can always start with something like War or Whm as those are very typical subjobs to use for melee/mage jobs. Taking them to 37 won't hurt anything, and can be quite helpful.

I'm on Ifrit server, and don't find there is a lack of population. Not many people hang out in the lower level areas, Whitegate and Jeuno are the main populated areas. After about level 55 most if not all leveling occurs in ToAU areas.

Keep in mind a smaller population is not always a bad thing, less competition for camp sites, getting into endgame shells, and various other things. But after comparing somethings, Ifrit isn't really lacking in population compared to other servers.

If you need help or have questions, just look me up in game. Character name is Necropolis like it is here.

Oh wow, thanks Necro.
This website really is like amazing xD

Good to know that your on Ifrit!
I might have to ask ya a few things in-game, but I'll be sure to keep my questions to a minimum.. I'm sure they'd get annoying after a while. ;P

BLU is by far the most versatile job in the game. Overall there are 100 Blue Magic spells that can be learned. The spells can be equipped and unequipped and grouped together in a multitude of ways as well. BLUs have tremendous solo ability but they shine in parties. Typically they are used for DD but they have the ability to tank or heal if need be as well. NIN, WAR and WHM are some common subs depending on the situation.

CORs are quite versatile as well. This is a simplification but they are a bard, rdm and rng all rolled up into one job. They can buff, debuff, pull, dd and even heal quite effectively. The COR rolls are some of the most useful buffs in the game and their debuff skills can be lifesaving. NIN, WAR and WHM are common as subs though a variety can be used.

PUPs are the enigma of ToAU. They have strong solo skills as long as their automaton is alive. They aren't as common in parties, but then again there aren't really too many PUPs out there. I think there are 3 or 4 NA 75 PUPs on my server so far. PUPs so far do not have a quested weaponskill either. WHM is the standard solo sub but I'm not sure what else would be useful.

Oh cool..
Very nice descriptions eticket! ^^

I'm really starting to think that COR would be fun.. I love Pirates haha xD

But I'm looking at their stuff on the FFXI wiki thing, and a lot of their spells and stuff are confusing me..
Stuff about rolls and dice?
Any chance someone could explain a lil more in-depth about Corsairs?
and are they fairly easy to find groups with?

They are very easy to get invites on.

Rolls are party buffs that do a number of things. For example, Corsair's Roll is an exp bonus. When you initially use the ability, a number between 1 and 6 pops up. You then have the ability to roll again to increase it. You can increase it up to 11 but you Bust if you go over. Each roll also has a lucky number and an unlucky number as well. The best roll is always 11 and the lucky number is always 2nd best. The unlucky number is usually the worst positive result. A bust is typically a negative or non-result.

Take Corsair's roll. An 11 equals a 24% exp bonus per kill. The lucky number (5) results in a 16% bonus, while the unlucky number (9) results in a 7% bonus. A bust results in a negative exp bonus of -6% per kill.

Each roll is tied to an individual job. Hunter's Roll (RNG) increases accuracy and ranged accuracy. The effect is greater if a RNG is in the party.

Some of these buffs have mediocre effects but some are near gamebreaking. Evoker's Roll (SMN) is a refresh effect and can result in 5mp/tick with a SMN in the party. Healer's Roll (WHM) can add +12 hMP for resting mages. Those two buffs alone will usually result in quick invites. Different rolls are gained at different levels and are unlocked by buying dice.

The cards are elemental attacks. Each card has a corresponding element and deal damage based on that element. The exceptions are Light and Dark cards which Sleep and Dispel respectively. This ability is available at lvl 40. The cards themselves are ammo items.

Adding even more fun is the CORs 2 hour, Wild Card. It can reset ability timers and if you're lucky, can even give everyone tp or mp and reset 2 Hour abilities for everyone in range.

Re: Coming back after about 3 years.. Need help! ><

I think ethicket missed one major sub on COR, and that's ranger. I'm fairly certain thats thier main sub if they can avoid going /nin. Something about ranged WSs and Ranged accuracy bonuses.

Cor in thier main function in very similar to bard. Rolls are your songs, and you can roll them once a minute. The benefits of the rolls vary depending on what you roll. Each roll has a lucky number and unlucky number, and I believe 11 is a catch all lucky number. Let's say some roll has an unlucky number of 5, and lucky number 7. You roll and get a 3, you can use your job ability "Double up" to roll another number till you either hit your lucky number, 11 or "bust". Bust effects you, and you alone, so don't let mistaken parties hell at you for busting.

They are often asked to pull for a party, play a support role, and do some DD inbetween all that. They are one of 3 job classes that can provided refresh (recover mp). They are one of 3 jobs that can dispel (remover a beneficial effect from mobs). And they offer buffs to the party, such as crit hit rates, hMP, evasion and various other effects. They are also the only class that can offer a boost in experience points per kill. Many argue it's benfit over other rolls they could provide, but it's still there.

(personally I hated Corsair's Roll, the exp roll, because I was always a back line job, and the cor loved to leave me out of the roll)
