  • Would anyone be interested in an FFXI novelization?

I've been thinking about this, and would anyone be interested in an FFXI novelization? To be more accurate, it would probably be released in small doses, somewhat in the same way that a comic is, except of course without pictures.

I don't think it would be TOO hard, since SE has the main storylines made for us. I already have ideas for the party, and given the many sidequests, areas, and the party themselves there would be plenty of room to stretch it out so it doesn't run out of FFXI story too quickly.

Basically, my question is, would anyone be interested in reading this? It would somewhat be a cross between History of Vana'diel, and a fanfic. I personally don't know if I'd read it if I didn't write it, but it could also be nice for players that left or can't play to still experience the storyline.

It would be impossible to copyright, given it's SE's property. They seem pretty friendly to fan fictions (CloudSeph, etc.) - but trying to copyright it would be like trying to trademark "iPod".

I'd read it, as long as it told the FFXI story lines and wasn't like some fan diary of what they do IG >_>

Well obviously I don't play anymore, and I wouldn't use my friends' characters considering I only talk to two or three of them regularly. It might have some of my experiences, or ones I read about, or characters based loosely around real people, but what wouldn't? It would not be a dairy, though, nor a recounting of my experiences (which I don't remember most of)

It would be mainly about three things:
1- Unity, the main reason FFXI exists IMO. Yes, there would be characters, but they would not be real people.
2- Telling the FFXI story, with characters that aren't nameless, as the epic it really is. History of Vana'diel is good, but it's very much the cliff notes version.
3- Showing parts of the story a lot of people don't look into- quests. Such as, showing the Summoner AF missions with the Windurst missions.

You know, the more I think of it, I begin to wonder if I could do it myself XD I wonder if ...

Eh, a novelization of an MMO would just seem wierd, there's just too many little side stories that a set party of six would never actually experiance. Plus, most stories in game always focus on one player being the hero, and though this works in a game, it'd be wierd for it to work like that in a novel. Maybe if it was more an anthology of stories, featuring different characters for each piece of the tale, as in Vana D'iel, it's more then one adventurer saving the world and keeping the peace. It would be especially helpful for those small, yet notable quests as it would bring more life to the world if other people were handling smaller events and such.

I doubt I would read more than a bit of the first release (just to see what it was like). I've never been big on fanfic. Even an official novelization probably wouldn't be my thing.

                  A novel or a Manga?

A manga would be sweet, but so would a graphic novelization. Have you see what Marvel has done recently with Halo? Damn that's good stuff.

In all seriousness though, I think FFXI has the most potential of any title thus far to become a movie. All them of would make great movies, but I just find that FF has the deepest story and history to its world.

The problem is XI is also the longest so far and still growing. Still, I'd be cool to see something. Advent Children was OK in my opinion. A full FMV run through of the original game with (good) voice acting would have rocked more.

While I'm on the subject, the whole FF7 craze is driving me nuts. It was a good game, we get it. Stop all the rampant whoring of the one title and do something new. No, Sephiroth and Cloud are NOT the best characters ever. Either remake the damn game on PS3 already or just leave it alone, enough is enough SE.

                  /rant off

Back on topic, how would you want to do the story though? Would there be multiple POV for Bastok/San d'Oria/Windurst? I think the great thing about a novel would be the potential for much deeper back ground information.

You could really delve into the pasts of the nations and the races of Vana'diel without having to go into vivid visual representations like the game does. I for one, would love to read about San d'Oria's long history. Ranperre was pretty bitching, and the country used to be torn by one helluva civil war.

Windurst wasn't all lovey-dovey like it is now either. Those taru were pretty damned violent when they were still warring tribes (more reason that leads me to believe Windy is based on Japan, despite being "the cultural learning center" of Vana'diel)

I haven't actually read the Halo novels, but they're pretty good from what I hear. Yes, it would be told from multiple POV

Re: Would anyone be interested in an FFXI novelization?

You could make take a party from each nation, and have them start as fledgling adventurers, or have a mixture. IE, a bunch of noobs team up with one older mentor, and they possibly get PLvled at certain portions, or they go off and exp amonst their levels while the mentor does things elsewhere. OR, the mentor could level a lower job with them and contribute his/her knowledge to the others.

So a full party, from each nation, experiencing the stories and lores and the rich history each branch of the game has to experience, and somewhere along the lines, they meet up, and have to become an alliance to tackle some of the games larger problems.

This way there would be individuality and togetherness. I think that would be terribly complex, but it would work out pretty well..

It would interest me, but only if it was written by someone with a lick of talent and didn't come of as a cheesy biography of someone who has an internet girlfriend.

Re: Would anyone be interested in an FFXI novelization?

I was actually considering writing something like this lately, because the last MMO I was in, I wound out writing my character's biography out, much like a factual biography.

But what I would write wouldn't exactly be the FFXI story, it would be my character's story, which means there would be few if any mention of other player characters, and instead the characters we all know as "NPC" would be the only 'real' people she interacted with, instead, other adventurers would serve bit parts at best, like hired help for one or two missions.

So it would kinda be the same thing that I already wrote, but with a different central character with a different outlook in different events.

Yes, it was inspired by the Simpsons

I had a fanfic of my own based around the people I know IRL who also play on my server, but I haven't really bothered with it in a long time.
