        3) same goes for turning on a second computer.
        4) dual-screens are effectively disabled with vanilla-FFXI currently, because as soon as the FFXIApp loses focus the game 'crashes' back to pol.

all the other platforms that play the game currently are dedicated systems (they exist to play games and DVD's, one at a time.) a pc is a multipurpose multitasking tool.

Your comp must suck then mine has NEVER crashed while doing anything.
        2) ok so your a greeny? you dont believe in using paper for information? But if you cant get the information u need because its in full screen doesnt that make it important?
        3) if u have a second computer on while you are playing FFXI you shouldnt have to print anything just go back and look at the comp.
        4) like I said your comp must suck if it crashes.. Also hello you cant watch a Movie and look up stuff on the internet, inless you use a windower also...so that really doesnt make sense. Most PC games you cant get on the enternet at the same time same with watching a movie or whatever. So yeah....

I said I didnt own a computer that could have FFXI till I bought this game so I didnt till a month or so ago, because I just got a Labtop that can? Also then why do people play on Ps2,Ps3,and Xbox 360 for? 1) they dont have a comp 2) they prefer the game system then a PC. 3) They like the system more then the PC. They are alot of different reasons for things. I know that.

          .
It has nothing to do with the quality of the computer. If you have anything that pops up while FFXI is running (update for iTunes, AIM message, anti-virus autoscan or anything like that), the game will crash back to POL. FFXI as it is must be in full screen and have "focus" or be the main window running on top of others.

Why should people spend money printing paper maps, guides or the like when it's readily available on my computer? If I just got to Sea and need to do the map quest, how am I going to find my way about? I won't need the map printed out after I have it, I just need it for 15 minutes while I do the quest. So I look on the website and follow the green dots, simple as that. And thats how a lot of things are.

To print out all the resources you'd use for FFXI you're looking at a lot of paper. Go to www.ffxiclopedia.com and start printing out every page. Even if you don't need anything, most people at endgame will need all the mission walk throughs, AF quest, maps, Dynamis and Limbus info, Einherjar, Salvage and Assault. Thats just to name a few, not to mention gear you look up, or recipieces for synths that you need.

Well my comp must be different because if somthing does pop up FFXI freezes and asks me if I want to let the progrem run if I say no it doesnt pop up. Also I do print everything if I need it, I plan on making a FFXI book for myself, who knows you might need the map or walkthroughs again. Also if thats the case then why do the make Strategy Guids for games? Because pretty much once u beat the game u will never need it again so why bother? I just dont get why you cant print it...

Sounds like you are running on Vista? Trust us; for most people, things like anti-virus software popup/notices knock us out of FFXI without warning. (I disabled scheduled scanning and auto updates long, long time ago because of it.)

Have you ever priced ink jet cartridges, and compared the price to amount of ink they contain? It can be as high as $22/oz. Forget saving the planet--I just want to save (quite) a few bucks.

              Edit:
BTW, your inkjet manufacturers do not want you to use all the ink you bought--they tell you to get new cartidges before it's half empty.

My friend was able to understand the "complex" windower on his first day of FFXI, before he understood how the Auction House worked. It isn't complex at all.

Yeah I know I am sorry I am just mad from another thread xD. Not really paying attention to what I am saying which I do all the time and I am really sorry for that. I know ink is alot...we have to pay like 30 or 40 bucks just for our ink. (I guess you could go to the school or libray and do it but I dont know.) But yeah sorry I am going to shutup now.

The only reason i asked this simple question is that i play this game not hardcore gaming, and i like to socialise chatting with friends etc on msn whilst playing i didnt want to start a major discussion raling against the planet hahaha it just seems that a safe and secure windower woud deffinetly work well with this game :D the only problem i think with this game and its mintute, as i will state before someone else says it , just turn ********* msn off noob :D hahahah

And I have a whole other computer that does the same thing and was cheaper than your DS. That said, it's STILL stupid to spend that much money because a program doesn't want to let you run a program in a window- especially when SE agrees there's no problem with it by ''making their own''.

This whole debate is null anyway- EVERYONE knows that having a fullscreen version only is a bad idea. Az knew it, SE knows it, and the PC players know it.

For the cost it would take me to print out info for every time I looked something up while I was logged in, either via Windower or via a second computer, I could easily have bought another mmo and played that instead.

I do find it funny that it's taking SE to make an official windower till this winter. See how there is already a windower in use by many people, you'd think they could just see how it was done, and go from there.

SE is building one correctly. - the system that was used for most of the unofficial windowers involves hooking into the process, adding a wrapper class, and 'faking' full screen. - this leads to minor instability (which mostly rears it's head in game as increased 'lag' spikes due to frame rate slowdown) and an increased processor load.

why SE needed to move to DX9 to do it (which is why it's taking so much time) I don't know. but assuming they go 100% DX9 on the rewrite, it should actually make the game run better / more compatible with modern videocards. which is definitely a good thing.

tl;dr: hooking into the process is an unnecessary hack when you control the base source code. DX9 is win even if it takes longer.
