You Probably won't find too many people on here who don't care about their Gear... mainly because the people who go like 10-15 levels at a clip without upgrading armor and weapons are usually either Gil Sellers, or Newbs coming from WoW hoping the next mob with drop a helmet =P

I only update pieces I believe I NEED. I went from like 35 to 55 using pretty much the same RDM gear(Partial RSE, some +1 mace and a Shield among other things) the whole time, minus the elemental staffs at 51. At 60 I farmed and bought a Penitent's Rope cause I believe that's a very important piece for RDM, and haven't made plans to buy anything else minus a Spider Torque later on when I start leveling RDM again.

I update as frequently as necessary. With melee jobs like NIN, WAR, or PUP I update as frequently as possible, because every stat makes a lot of difference. And by "update" I mean new versions of everything. Full body gear, head gear, and earrings and rings if anything affordable is available. I do research on if I should change my food or not.

With mage jobs, I can update a lot less often. Because, first off, I know the gear that's available much better. And second, there are some things you can just keep forever because it's the best thing. Like with RDM, I've had electrum rings as my ring gear since level 40. On WHM, I'm level 45 and still find the mage's tunic, Mithra RSE hands and subligar, and solid wand +1 (from level 32) as the best combination.

It all really depends on level, availability, cost, and overall need.

As for players who have sucky gear...yes, sometimes there's no excuse for it, but just remember the gear doesn't always make the player.

I actually find it better (for me at least) to research ahead of time what gear I want to work towards while I'm leveling towards it, so that when I actually get to said level, all I have to do is to go out and get it (if I don't already have it, which is likely anyways), slap it on, and call it a day. No real need to update/upgrade every 1-5 levels for every single piece of gear. Find what's needed, and go for that.

Well it depends. For me, mostly depends on gil. As I level up, the first thing I need to check on is whether or not there is a spell that I need at the levels I expect ot reach. If there is, then it takes precedence. Right now, I am working on my WHM, so I have plenty of mage stuff left over from leveling RDM (packrat packrat) that I can use for my WHM. Mostly rings, ropes, etc.

When it comes to AF, I upgrade it ASAP. It's free gear and it's not terribly difficult to get most times if you have good friends to help you out.

As it happens, I purchase spells before anything else. Everything else can be worked out later. I try to update as often as possible, but sometimes when I' m really broke I can get by with what I have for a few more levels.

It's just like being poor IRL, you make do with what you have and you get creative to stretch it a bit longer.

Yes, certain parts of RSE are irreplaceable for several levels. On WHM, almost full Seer's (minus the pants) and my RSE pants are perfect, and AF in 6 more levels!

I don't think I'd take it's recommendations, but it is nice if you just want to see what gear is out there, I haven't heard of the Varlet's Targe or the Kubira beads. Now if only I could use a lance/shield combo :/


I'm pretty much the same as LilithAngel, I have a specific gear/job combination in mind that I work towards.

Also, there are some things where it would be nice to have, but I really don't want to spend that kind of money on them. Take the Colossal Lance for instance, last I checked it's 400k, which to me, is far more than I'm willing to pay, I wouldn't pay over 250k to be honest for it. I want to work towards an Imperial Nezza, which puts the Colossal Lance to shame and is only one level later, and if I can't get that, I'll just use a Dreizack at 72 which has much the same stats as a Colossal.

So yeah, it's pretty situational, but I upgrade when I can and when I feel that I should upgrade.

I pretty much already have or have better or am planning to obtain everything it reccomends... /sigh

I was really hoping to find some new items. I found this blue rock thing to go into the ranged ammo slot with a mind build that I'd never seen before, but the stats were poopy, so it was kinda pointless.

I considered vilma's ring again, but too much -hp and I run into the tarutaru durability problem. I'd rather stick with my ether ring, or get something with maybe mind or something, I don't know right now, still kinda puzzling over what I'm going to do with my second ring slot.

For "well-rounded" COR at 75 it recommends Tsar's Egg for my ammo slot and Hexagun +1 for ranged. I don't think I have point out what is wrong with that. Bad enough it was suggesting you still use the Hexagun at 75, each time I see a 75 COR still using one I have the sudden urge to beat them senseless.

It also suggests Nintura's Sash, Bellona's Ring and Varlet's Targe (/PLD latent... um... riiiight). So two AV drops and level 30 latent gear for a subjob i'll never use. Two pieces are totally out of reach and one totally useless.
