QFT. Sometimes, for 10, 20, even 30 levels, there's not a better piece of gear available for a certain slot. Heck, until I got to 72 and got my errant body, I was still wearing my seer's in my resting macro. Level 29 gear on a level 70 whm...? If it's got the hMP.

My holy breastplate enjoyed a similar run of insane duration, I wore it clear up through level 75 till I got my relic briault.

My RSE pants are what, level 31? MP + 30something and mind to boot, try and beat that if you can on a whm leg gear. They lasted till I got my AF pants (And I still liked the RSE better stat-wise but I was tired of men staring at my thighs!). My REAL leg upgrade didn't come until the 70's and blessed slacks. And RSE for a galka mage can't be beaten by three burly men armed with crowbars.

Now some things, like straight-up defense gear, and weapons, are pretty much standardized in that higher level = higher defense/dmg, so there is always an upgrade available as you level up.

But once you stray away from defense gear and weapons, the piece with the higher level requirement is not always an upgrade, and in many many cases is actually counterproductive.

Anyway, this is mostly pretty mage-specific, and sorry to post a borderline-rant, but this is what I found out about gear upgrades and why I think buying all new equipment every 5-10 levels is a bad route to go.

Re: When Do You Update Your Gear?

It really depends on the piece for me weather or not I'll update it. So farm I mainly level mage jobs, so it's a bit different than a melee. For me to spend gil on something it has to have a significant boost. I'm not going to blow an extra 50k on one more int or something silimar.

Now when I level melee jobs I keep weapons and main slots updated. But fairly generic gear until I want to seriously level a job. Bst I spent a bit on updating every few levels and I'll do the same with mnk once I get to it. Tank jobs I'll keep updated as well. But if a certain piece does nothing to significantly increase my damage output then I'm not spending gil on it.

Of course now I level most jobs up with a bard PL, so I just skip the gear and wear an egg help and a weapon. But if I'm in a normal party I'll ungimp myself and through on level appropriate gear. Taru RSE have pretty good stats for melee so that will hold me for a while as well.

When do you update your gear? is the question

no one said anything about having to update ALL your gear every time.

like my post, when I do my updates to my gear, when I change EXP areas, if the gear does not need to be changed, I dont change it, less to buy that way.

Re: When Do You Update Your Gear?

I only update my gear when it's necessary and/or worth it. It also depends on my current job class (i.e. I don't need a weapon upgrade every two minutes if I'm playing a mage job).

I only update my gear when the chance I get and when I have gilz to afford.

That's the thing, I have no 'system' like that for gear upgrades. Of course, I've hit 75 now, so it's all a matter of 'wishlist' being obtained, but the method before that was...

              1. Is there anything I CAN upgrade?
              If yes,
              2. Do I NEED to upgrade it?
              If yes,
              3. Do I have the GIL to upgrade it?
              If yes,
Is it on the AH right now?
              If no,
              Time to go farming.

How often did I ask this? Approximately every level. Usually, though, I didn't get to question 3.

Re: When Do You Update Your Gear?

I agree with the posts regarding to gear not always being necessary. I'm still using Battle Gloves on my THF at 51 because I can't find anything that bests them. I have stuff macro'd in for SATA, but otherwise there's nothing that beats Battle Gloves yet...and won't be till like 60-something iirc.

Mainly, I upgrade when there is something that beats what I have equipped, so just scan the AH for anything better than what I have in each slot.

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D

True. For mage jobs, it's more important that you keep your spells updated rather than your equipment. I've been playing as a whm, and it's not really that important that I buy that new pair of gloves to increase my defense because I'm not supposed to be in the front line anyways.

Re: When Do You Update Your Gear?

Perhaps the poll should have been rephrased "When do you upgrade your gear?" Most players don't get new gear simply for the sake of getting new gear. The wording "update" seems to be causing most of the discussion in this thread, even though pretty much everyone agrees on what's being said.

From another perspective, "update" doesn't necessarily mean getting new gear. If I hit level 60 on a job, check what's available, and find that nothing new at that level is an actual improvement on what I currently have, you could still say that I just "updated" my gear.

When Windows Update doesn't have to download anything, it's not a failure to update. It simply means updating didn't require any action beyond inquiry.

It's not that hard to understand what I mean, but I do understand it from your point of view.

As for me, I pretty much update (or upgrade if you prefer that) my gear every 5 lvls or a little around that.
