I actually imagine Alchemist would be a tool-based job. They could use MP in conjunction with the tools to create an effect or temporary item.
They could start off at level 1 with thier Mix ability and as they gain levels, they gain traits to create types of items, as they futz around with various items and tools, they "learn" a formula and it becomes a "spell" they can use, but only so long as they have the resources to do so.
Were they given a scavange-like ability. they'd have the ability scare up some tools on the field. And if they subbed RNG, they could find some firesand to have fun with from time to time (explosives are fun, kids).
Some of the elements already exist within the system. Tools are recognized for Ninjustu Spells and COR's Quick Draw. RNG has scavange. BLU's learn spells from viewing them, Alchemist could learn thier magic by experimenting with Mix.
Assault has pretty much murdered the pre-Maat Alchemy market. Reraisers, Hi-pots, Hi-potion or Ether Tanks used to run a bit, now its just Vile Elixers, Icarus Wings and Sleep potions that cost a pretty penny, if that.
