  • Quiting is harder than quiting smoking...

    Hello all,

Well, here's a little back story. I knew no one when I started 2 months ago, and I still don't. Sometimes after dying, I decide that its just not worth it anymore... but I always come back! Can anyone REALLY quite this for good? I always hear "returning player" or whatever. What do you guys think?

It's not quiting if you haven't started really playing.

        QFT.

Also, how can you not know anyone? Considering that practically everything apart from soloing 1-10 requires other people, I fail to believe you know no one.

Much to my personal dismay, I know *many* people who quit this game and never came back. They were good friends who enjoyed this game while they played and whose company I personally enjoyed. It's easy to quit if you want, but I supposed thats more a matter of personal willpower then anything else.

Also, have you actually tried (or succeeded) to quit smoking, OP? Because they are really not analogous.

Well can tell you it is pretty tough to stop. I left FFXI a little over 3 years ago because friends all switched to EQ2, then WOW. Now I have come back and wish that my toons were never deleted, but it is fun starting over.

As for making friends, once you get to or around level 10 you will have tons of groups and make several friends. The 1st 2 days I was back did not really deal with many players, would run around heal others and say "Hi" just to be friendly but that was about it. Last nigth got in my first group sine my return and it was with some really good people and had a blast.

No, I haven't been able to quit smoking... but, I don't sit at work all day thinking about smoking either....

I've been in Tons of PTs, but it's not like I ever talk to them again afterwards... though I would.
My RL friend plays, and is the only reason I'm still on Asura. But, I can only PT/hang with him in 30 cap or less PTs...

I really thought it would be more like hanging out with friends... But it's not even close after 2 months...

You don't even wave to people when you see them after being in an awesome six hour party with them?

I've been in probably 2 6-hour PTs, and many 3-4 hour PTs, and many more for less, but I really don't remember them and I'm sure they don't remember me. I've heard that people will really start to care that I'm a RDM at lv 41, but it'll be a hard road till then I think...

Have you tried a linkshell? There are social shells with no level req. shouting all the time. I think you just need to be more outgoing. You can't expect to just walk around the server and have someone spot you and be your friend. You've got to give a little to get something in return. Join a linkshell, do things with them, and you'll make some friends.

I dunno, quitting this game was pretty damn easy for me. I went in, I sent rather abrupt 'Quitting XI, will keep POL account, message me if you want' cookie cutter messages/tells to the few friends who hadn't already quit before me, then I logged and deactivated the entire shebang.

It's easy for me because I refuse to sell my soul to Japanese-style grind-fests anymore. Offline games, one thing. Online? Eh, I got better things to be doing. Playing pussy in a corner with monsters for 8 hours to level up is not one of them. Grinding out gil for weeks is also not among them.

I've not felt the first inclination to go back to this thing, either. At times I miss my friends, but I've drug most of them to my forums and we talk there, so that isn't even an issue.

If you still *want* to play, but feel like you're not making friends, then I would suggest as others have: a linkshell. Quickest, and perhaps easiest way. Another way is to simply break silence. Some people seem to never talk in parties until someone else does, and then you realize they're pretty cool, too. Making friends doesn't happen without at least a little effort. :3
