Never heard of any non-JP players who really put "JP only" in search comments, but I've been sorely tempted at times. (One fight, three deaths, then disband kind of NA party, anyone? )

On the other hand, I do have both 'E' and 'J' set; I can read a little Japanese, and I know not to use {Hello!} unless I know it's morning in Japan. I enjoy JP-majority pick up party more than NA PUG's, but it's more of a statistical average thing.

Something like 98% of JP-majority party have been OK to good, vs. 70% for NA-majority pick up groups. (Note, NA parties improve a lot post 50's, and is a lot worse under 40. Very odd, compared to how consistent the JP parties have been for me.) Only six or seven out ten invites I get are NA's, but I've long lost count of horrible NA parties. I think I had two extremely bad JP parties in the last two years...

Yeah, it's the same here, I hate NA parties as much as any oldies do. But, well, I personally don't like non-JP players that fake their "JP only", it's rude, stupid and on top of it, narrow minded(though this does come with the "stupid" package).

I am having trouble deciding if I should go with 'E' or 'JE', I want the JP to know that I am an EN player, I want them to know fully well that I will communicate with them using translator, because my ingame name is... Japanese(check my character info). I purposely use [Hello] on my reply, so that they know I am EN, if they decide to be racist, then I don't want to party with them anyway, so no lose for me. I had experience of Japanese players openly say racist comments about their own NA party members, in party... I don't doubt NA/EU would do the same, but well, I would rather not partying some racist just because I need EXP.

My experience also say the same really: 70% JP party are good, 55% NA party are good. But I won't go choosing the people by their race/language, I will decide if they are good or bad after I partied with them.

Oh, and yes, the non-JP players with "JP only" thing is 1st hand experience of myself: some English players standing next to me, speaking in perfect English, my friends that happend to know them confirmed they are NA, but they have "JP only" comment. Less of them now, but I still see one or two now and then.

What greeting should be used if it's not morning in Japan? When I'm sending tells to invite someone to a party, I use {Hello!} or {Excuse me...}, but if I'm joining a party I'll always say {Hello!} first thing, as a greeting.

Oh, you haven't been rude, just odd--the "foreigner who misunderstand common set-phrase" kind of oddness. It's not a huge deal--they are well used to this from us, even if they may not know why we keep doing this.

{Hello!} translate to "konnichiha", which isn't used early morning or during the evening. {Good Morning!} or {Good evening!} should be used depending on the time of the day. If you're not sure about the time in Japan, type out "Hello!" in English; every single Japanese person knows what it means.

For inviting JP players: Starting with {Excuse me...} is perfect, etiquettes wise. Don't have to worry about time of day in Japan, either.

For greeting JP party members on first meeting them, {Nice to meet you.} will do. Do a /bow emote, too.

Don't use {Nice to meet you.} at the end of the party, however; use {See you again!} instead, and /bow.

            * * *
            Additional hints:
            • {main} is "main weapon slot". {heal!} is resting (as in /heal on). {main} {heal!} is nonsense in any language except English.
            • {sub} is "sub-weapon slot", and does not refer to support job ("subjob"). Support job is, er, {Support Job} (under [Game Terms]). I usually get by, though, by asking directly "RDM/BLM? OK?" or "WAR/MNK? /RNG? {Which?}"
            • {Japanese} is "Japanese language", {English} is "English language", and etc. They cannot be used to refer to people or nationality, but you can muddle through with {French} {person}, etc.
            • {Fish} is not a verb--noun only, as in tuna, salmon, etc. collectively; {Fish} {Who?} is asking who is a fish. You can ask who is the puller by {Fisherman} {Who?} instead, and use {Fishing} in your pulling macro.
            • A Tank is {Shield} {Job}.

'Konnichiwa' is most definitely used in the afternoon, you can use it at any time when the sun is out, then after it gets dark you use 'konbanwa'. If it's before noon you can still use 'konnichiwa' but it's better to use 'ohayou'.

              Japanese *always* can spot the players who don't speak any Japanese during JP prime time because they always greet with {Hello!} instead of {Good Evening.}

Oh, opps. lol. Too much rushing typing out all that.

Yes, "konnichiha" ({Hello!} for afternoon, {Good morning!} for before noon, and {Good Evening!} for evenings. Thanks, Feenicks.

And here I would have thought typing English (or German or French) in between auto translated words would have been the dead give away.

Re: Why is there so much NA bashing?

Well of course there is that too, but first impressions make a big difference in my opinion. I've been in parties where we were never sure if someone was JP or NA because they managed to get all the essentials right and pretty much just stayed silent throughout the party.

Also on top of all that, these days with the offline macro editor and windower, it doesn't take a genius to figure out how to properly address a party not only in Japanese but using kana, so the lines are blurred even more.

But obviously if one party member says stuff like {Hello!} I'm happy that I can {See you again!}, then it's a dead giveaway.

Re: Why is there so much NA bashing?

Cali you're taking my reply too seriously. My reply was direct at DA's point about racism being a NA trait. My point is that there are racist people on both side. That's all. This has nothing to do with language preference.

I am Thai and I grew up watching JP anime/manga since 3 years old. Just so you know I'm not bashing Japanese people or anything.

As a matter of fact tho, look at the real world man. Japanese in general tend to be more racist than American. My friend Takeshi, who is a Japanese-American said even him got treated differently than native Japanese when he went to Japan. But, look at NA, more and more people around the world are appreciating Japanese culture. Japanese manga, Japanese kimono, Japanese samurai are just a few things younger people adore these days.

Re: Why is there so much NA bashing?

IMHO, the way I see both NA party and JP party are:
                        1. Am I willing to work with everyone in the party.
                        2. Is the party member willing to work with others in the party.
I had both great or horrible parties with NA, JP, or mix languages. It is always the teamwork that make or break the party, not the race of the player.

I probably couldn't even visit Japan to see my favorite band without being tossed into the anime nerd group. I don't even like anime that much...

Re: Why is there so much NA bashing?

There is one thing I noticed... and trust me, I don't agree with any "NA parties like to do this and JP parties like to do this" crap...

                            Japanese BLM tend to suck.

It must be a like a sterotype for them, like driving. A lot of times they wear bad gear, but it isn't just that. They just seem bad at the job, no matter the level. I was partying with a JP DRK who has Relic GS in Qufim while he was on BLM. Dude was horrid. Last night, in a manaburn, I partied with this really shitty BLM who couldn't understand the concept that it was better to let the monsters respawn first, then clear them all for a bigger chain.

I will never forget this one party(4 JP BLM, me, and a NA BRD) I had where 3 of the BLM were gimped, 1 was slightly geared better than me. One of the BLM was so gimped, he was easily the worst equipped player I've ever seen(and if you'd seen him, he'd be yours too). The real kicker was that they told me to use Thundaga III instead of Thunder IV. I even got D2'd over it because I continued to use Thunder IV. Jesus, what a party. Me and that BRD had a few good laughs though.

Now, I won't make it seem most NA BLMs are good. I've noticed people using Burst/Freeze II and even Thundaga/Blizzaga III in manaburns... that's my idea of a crappy BLM in a party. However, I think I've met a lot more bad JP BLM than bad NA BLM, and I've probably met 10x more NA players than I've met JP players.

I just wish we could stop using the terms JP, NA, etc. when talking about how good those players are. Of course I have no problem with making jokes about the such, it's just that when people actually believe that <insert nation here> is better at so and so.
