Also, as was linked above, we're talking about $20 or less. That is, quite frankly, not that much money.

edit: Of course (since I'm honestly not trying to be rude), that's all relative, and some folks may not want to make the necessary purchase, or worry about transferring parts from one PC to another later on. And that's cool. But to most of us, it just seems like the smartest/easiest thing to do, hence the confusion on our end.^^
Yeah, Murph, when I do buy my new computer I'll buy it with a DVD-ROM drive already in there and ready to go. I know how to install new do-hickeys on my computer, but I'm not a fan of it for fear that I'll screw it up.

Tricky ... /welcome. I'm in the process of personally expanding our linkshell (since no one else seems to be recruiting, but hey, I'm a social person and I like to jabber on in /linkshell sometimes, which is hard when no one is there). I'm trying to include not only some high- and mid-level folks, but also plenty of newbies so you'll fit right into our group if you do decide to come to Hades.

We're also female friendly, as I am female, and so is another member that I know of, maybe one more that I'm not quite sure of.

EDIT: Here's another *not very nice* solution: go to the store and buy a DVD drive. Keep the receipt. Take it out of the box, hook it up, install software if you have to, install the game, then unplug the drive, repackage it, take it back and say you unpacked the whole thing before you realized it wasn't compatible with your computer. Get your money back, and you've lost only some time and gained FFXI.

Probably not the "best" way of doing it, but hell, it would work.

i dont have a dvd drive too >.< I only need it when toau expansion come, beside that i dont even think of a DVD. But now the new expansion is coming and i will pray that they have the torrent file like what i did for toau.
Dont ask me buy a DVD rom as i dont even use it unless just to install ffxi expansion. And buying one just to do that is a waste of money!

Re: bought the DvD collection, no dvd rom!

I really don't understand why everyone is pushing the OP to buy a DVD-rom drive. They posted that they didn't have one, and didn't intend on getting one and asked for an alternative. So it was offered that they buy a cheap one and be done with it, OP said no.

There ya go, problem solved, don't want to offer an alternative fine, don't. End of story. To go on insulting the way they buy/build computers has nothing to do with the topic.

I'm glad the op found a torrent that will *hopefully* work for them. Enjoy your buddy pass and hope you come to enjoy the game as much as most of us have. Have fun on Hades.

My comment on their building of computer had little to do with their choice regarding buying a DVD or not, I'm saying their entire idea of cutting costs is flawed.

And an FFXI torrent? Enjoy your keylogger =/

For once, I agree with Feba's bashing. And, the only FFXI Torrent I found was for the 06 collection, but then again, this was 2 months ago when I was looking.

Edit: Since I owned my first DVD drive it has been 7 years. There is no reason not to have one. At all. MOST GAMES ARE Comming on DVD only now, and, if you get one, that's money you SAVE in the future, just take it out, and pack it up with yoru stuff, when you buy a new computer, just opt for a CD-RW, and you're good to go, you prob. just saved about 60$ in the long run.

Also, DVD-ROM drives are not region coded like DVDplayers are. So she'll have no problem using it in the UK

Because its asinine, DVD roms are standard nowadays, why do you think most PC game companies felt it right, to start using DVD, it was not just cost saving. When you refuse to comply with standards, you miss out on things sometimes.

Weather or not it's asinine is beside the points. The OP asked for an alternative, and all she gets is flaming about not having a DVD player. I have no problem with her not having a DVD player because it in no way effects me, I just don't understand people's needs to force thier opinion on other people.

I have a several DVD-Roms or RW on all my computers, and I believe the only DVD I've used is the Vanadiel collection. I have a DVD players as well as a blue-ray player for watching movies. I just don't play many DVD games on my computers, I enjoy console games more. So to argue that it's the "Standard" doesn't really hold water if you are someone who does not play many DVD PC games. Mostly I used the drives to just write CDs to store information for work, if the OP doesn't need it, other than to install the game of course, I see no reason for the OP to buy one.

Necro, and the point is, there IS NO SAFE ALTERNATIVE that is why everyone is on her case about getting a DVD Drive. If you want to download torrent of the file, go ahead, but theres' no telling what else is lased in there. It's not an opinion, it's a fact of life. The games comming out for the PC are all on dvd.

Re: bought the DvD collection, no dvd rom!

Inu, I understand your point, but IT DOESN'T MATTER. OP asked for an alternative, not 10 people nagging about buying a DVD-rom. So I understand people saying that purchasing a DVD rom is an option, and that alternatives would not be safe, but to continually insist something upon someone is senseless.

To say there are no alternatives is folly, as Ita supplied an excellent alternative using a Mac. Aksannyi offered another option to just return the slightly used hardware (though I think most hardware is unreturnable is seals and such are broken, but an external drive could work). I'm sure there are other safer options as well, just a matter of people coming across them as sharing. To post in a topic telling the OP to do what they said they don't want to do just shows stubborness.

It seems to me these forums has degraded to nothing more than a few people that think they know it all telling anyone that ask a question to either:
                    1) Use the search comment (regardless weather or not it will render desirable results)
                    2) Some posters posting the same thing 10 times in a thread saying the same thing, (Pretty much you're stupid, I'm right.)
                    3) No. (No explanation as to why they'd answer that way, just trust thier opinion)

Ita's situation most likely dosn't apply. If she can't lay down the 15$ for a DVD-ROM, then 9 times out of 10, there is not another computer laying around the house that she can use. NOW, she can goto a friends house and borrow their drive, I mean you don't even need any drivers for it, they are all plug and play, a quick search on google will tell you how to install them.

And returning any hardware once it's been opened, unless you're very good at getting your way at retail stores (you have to be pushy, and demand what you want, and you can't back down), is extremly hard. Most (note most, not all) stores have a secruity steal on their products that they either put on in the store, or put on right when you leave so that if it's opened, it can't be returned for cash.

The only true safe option in this case is: Get a DVD-ROM Drive.

That is why we're pushing for it, they are cheap (I posted a 15.99 and a 17.99 one).

Also, you mention an external drive, if you read her post carefully you can see that her USB ports do not work, and that was suggested already.

It seems to me these forums has degraded to nothing more than a few people that think they know it all telling anyone that ask a question to either:

                      1) Most of the time, people say this, is because that these forums have been open since before the game came out in the USA, most, if not all of the questions that are posted here have been answered, SEVERAL TIMES.

                      2) We're posting the same thing 10 times because that's honestly the cheapest, and safest method (aside from grabbing another computer), the OP just dosn't get it.

                      3) No.

                        Actually, in another post, I suggested borrowing a friend's Mac/Win/Linux laptop. d^_^;

This is an ok solution, but it's too much hardware monkeying just to get one DVD worth of data. Network copy will do just fine, and it's "safe" enough, not to mention cheap.

I wouldn't say it's the only "safe" option. I would agree it's the best option, though. DVD drives aren't that expensive, and OP obviously has experience installing computer hardware.

Was interested in an alternative. So no this DVD drive won't do any more for the OP other than install a game to kill time in till they move and settle in a new place.

Certainly hope they don't get more moderation members like this site has had in the past few months.

To OP, I certainly don't think the general populace of FFXI is as it seems here, and certainly hope you find a good group of friends and enjoy the game, however you install it.
