Yep. Seriously, there's no good reason not to get a DVD-ROM. If you can't afford one, you shouldn't be playing FFXI anyway.

Re: bought the DvD collection, no dvd rom!

Sigh, not to post my life story... but im moving from the US to the UK and my semi outdated machine will not be following me, not when I could build a new one for the cost of shipping this one. To add insult to injury, my USB ports dont work (something about a small fire on the motherboard... not going to go into it) So yes, its prolly like 40 bucks for a drive I could install myself... however, I just spent 20 on this game, and sure to spend another 15 to start my account up , add to that a drive and thats 75 bucks spent on a game I know very little about, and if I turn out to not like it... its 75 wasted (dvd drive wasted in that this comp will be a givaway in about 5 months.)

So thats the story with not buying a dvdrom. Despite its problems the comp isnt a bad machine (1024 ram, athlon 3.8 dual core, and a Geforce video card thats about a year old) but I wish to not invest anymore money into it.

However, I spoke with customer service and its the original game only with the download code... which I can start with and see if I enjoy the game. If I do (and the torrent is a bust) who knows... maybe Ill get a dvd rom =p

look forward to getting to know you all, in game and on forum. I hope the sarcastic replies some have given are not characteristic of the FF11 crowd as a whole, b/c Im not looking for another WoW community experience.

You could always take the DVD drive out of the old machine and transfer it to the new one.

Maybe not. Are DVD-ROM drives region coded? If so, he couldn't buy one in the US and expect it to play any DVDs he gets in the UK. I dunno if that applies to software DVDs or just to movies, but ...

Actually, unless something changed, it's not going to cost you $15 to start up your account. You can play for free for a month and so long as you cancel your content ID before the month is up, you don't have to pay a dime for subscription if you decide you don't like it.

If it's going to be this much of a hassle for him, he'd probably be better off just waiting until he moves and gets his new PC. But what do I know? My PC came with a DVD drive four years ago.

                quick correction: she =p

I built this machine im using, and instead of looking ahead threw on a cd rom drive =( Yes, im paying for it now. EQ2 was the last game I bought and played that had the option of cd or dvd.

But, as the download from the buddy pass is almost done, I can still try out the game to see if I enjoy it while I torrent the game I just bought! Im excited about trying it!

See, now the first thing that popped into my mind is that this is obviously the problem as girls don't know how to use, let alone work on computers.

                  But I won't say that.

What an amazing coincidence! Cuz the first thing that popped into my mind when I noticed both your forum avatar and your sig contain female anime characters is that your a man who roleplays female characters, wears T-shirts with obscure japanese texts on them, and prolly lives in mommy's basement.

                      But I wont say that.

Anyway, if you want the entire package, probably all you have to do is to get the files from the DVD onto your computer's hard drive if you don't feel like buying a DVD drive at the moment. Borrow a friend's Mac/Windows/Linux laptop with a DVD drive to set up file sharing in your home network to copy over the files will do.

Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

No need to get on someone's case because they don't own a DVD drive.

My suggestion however is to really invest in one. More and more games these days are going DVD-only. You can get one as cheap as $15-20, so it's really not that much of an investment. Chances are Wings of the Goddess will be DVD-only just like Treasures of Aht Urhgan was, so you'll need one for that as well by the end of the year.

How the heck did you get a computer with 1GB RAM and a dual core processor without a DVD drive? If you built it yourself, you really need to reconsider your priorities. Also, I don't see why you can't just sell the computer when you lease to make up your cost.

Seriously, my computer is three years old, and it has *two* DVD drives. There's no reason not to have one.
