I've had extensive experience running a US version in the UK. I can tell you:
1. Once you register your account with US POL, you will be limited to managing your POL account via the US POL interface.
2. You cannot have US POL and UK FFXI installations on the same machine.
3. You can have UK POL and UK FFXI using a US key if you have already setup your account using the US POL version (ie, have playable characters setup). You can't access your billing information or add content IDs etc, but you can load up the game and play it. I currently do this because I threw out my US disks, and then did an install of POL and FFXI + all expansions from a UK disk set. If I need to configure my POL account I have the US POL version installed on another machine and I can manage my account via that.
All expansion keys need to match the country the original POL key is from. Everytime an expansion comes out I have to order it from the US now (x2 cos my wife plays as well).
