Collective Nouns of Vana'diel

This is just a thread I've posted in my LS forums among others. Just a bit of silliness.^^


So I was having a chat about collective nouns (you know, that practice of giving certain groups of things peculiarly poetic or relevant words to be used as a replacement for, well.. the word 'group'. Examples: A pride of lions, a murder of crows and all that.)

And I started playing around with the idea in terms of FFXI. Well, lo and behold, I found it both mildly amusing and wistfully distracting.

Here's a few of them:


A stabbing of goblins.

A levitation of Pugils.

An ugly of Galkans.

A yawning of Humes.

An annoyance of RMT.

A banning of RMT.

A grrrrr of RMT.

A spamming of Ninjas.

A pelvic-thrusting of Monks.

A bafflement of Moogles.

A jackpot of bees.

A wooOOOoooOOOoo of Bogies.

A roaming of elementals.

A blist of casinos.

Umm..

And a toilet-bowl of Lizards. ( -. -)

I don't know any really. Or I'm just too lazy to make some up, i like some of those you posted though, they're funny.

Yer doin' it wrong. It's basically naming a 'group of subjects' in a way similar to a 'murder of crows', or a 'flock of geese'. The term flock of geese isn't anything exciting but a murder of crows has a ring to it. Deeke is trying to recreate that ring in FFXI.

Arctic Wolf, yours are fine. That's the general idea, yeah.

To get a feel if you aren't familiar with this literary quirkthis is a nice site showing RL ones.

They could range from the descriptively simple (your 'A singing of Bards', for example) to much more obscure and not necessarily relevant ones such as 'A shade of Blue Mages' (many many kudos to Irmavep of Asura for that one^^)



A few others, some silly some not..


A chafing of Subligaria (as a male Elvaan, I can vouch for this.)


Alliterative:

A rumbling of Rams (um.. as a player who uses a vibration-enabled pad, I can vouch for this.)

A grumbling of Goblins (you all know the agro noise >< )

Um.. a meandering of mobs.

A pond of Poroggo? (Ok, these alliterative ones are starting to get hard now...)

I like the "shade of Blue Mages" one. Lemmie see if I can't do the other 17 jobs right quick...

A flight of Dragoons
A coven of Black Mages (a burn or manaburn also works here)
A troupe of Puppetmasters (also works for Bard)
A gang of Thieves
A monestary of Monks
An army of Warriors
A clan of Samurai (also works for Ninja, too)
A crusade of Paladins
A blasphemy of Dark Knights
A scouting of Rangers
A crew of Corsairs
A hospital of White Mages
An arrogance of Red Mages
A herd of Beastmasters
A heresy of Summoners

Some may just seem blatantly obvious, but I tried to go with what made sense. Enjoy.

I can't help but imagine WHM AF to be something a clown might wear..

For that reason I propose:

A circus of White Mages.


(By the way, shoulda mentioned this earlier: Bonus points are awarded for, among other things, collective nouns that don't end in '-ing'.) (Alliteration gets bonus points too^^)

I honestly prefer an unkindness of ravens. That's just a plain weird one. o.o

Flight of Dragoons isn't bad, but I'd like to toss in

a. A wing of dragoons
or
b. A squadron of dragoons

Probably wing...more of a ring to it.
