    Were you in Spirestone??

I sat in with a friend of mine on a Onyxia run lastnite and they were doing it for a guy who was quiting and going to FFXI. Kind of a last hurra saw a guy either with the same name or smiliar in the raid.

Wait, you haven't even played the game yet? If I'm getting this right, you encountered a problem with launching the game. It happens, get it fixed and play the game before talking about impressions, because that isn't even a "first impression", you have not met the game yet.

Kinda drifting of orig topic, but to answer, no I was on frostwhisper and rarely use Mostin as my char names.

He said he talked to GM; that means he did log on to a char, right?

Honestly, some people gets so defensive over a few vague accusations like there were some unspecified errors and installation hiccups.

The OP is new; give him a break. Heck, welcome him to FFXI--more warm bodies to feed to Qufim's crabs and fish can't be a bad thing for us.

The fact that I spoke with a GM in chat with playonline regarding my error trying to launch ffxi from the viewer, and they didn't even try to help and just said I need to e-mail, or call during the support hours. (whats the point of support GM's then?)

I figured he got stuck here.

I'd suggest you wait until level 10 or 12, you know, party for a bit, before anything sticks in your mind. I also suggest you read some guides on how to get the most fun out of the first 10 levels with quests and stuff.

You can chat with a GM from playonline viewer (I assumed regarding playonline viewer issues but I guess not)

And Legal Fish, thankyou for the advice I will do just that

Re: First impressions, good but dying game?

Just let my items stack automatically and I'll be happy :D :D :D

I'm not so worried about an MMO "ending". I'm more concerned with the amount of fun I'll have while playing it (since I am paying). Hell I played WoW for over 2 years and did the whole raiding thing. I had some of the best gear in the game, but it started to not be fun anymore. It became a job, and that's the last thing that I wanted to pay for.

And what do I have to show after 2 years on WoW and cancelling my account? Nothing at all. But that is how it is. Have fun, first and foremost. Sure your character will level up and get gear, etc. But in the end, once your character eventually gets deleted, as long as you had fun that is all that should matter.

If SE ever releases a new MMO that turns out to be really fun, I'll probably leave FFXI to play that one. That's how it goes.

Re: First impressions, good but dying game?

My point was (besides the actual bugs) from what I see so far there are many things I am just surprised havn't been changed yet that seem logical to. But as you all say, I am sure they will in time if enough people complain to get their attention like most mmorpg's.
This is still very vague. Things "still haven't changed" and yet he's not played enough to form an opinion. Doesn't help when someone puts the Chicken Little hat and proclaim the game is at the end of its days.

Look at Everquest. Been going for over a decade now. Graphics are totally outdated, but people still enjoy it and Sony still makes content for it.

FFXI is in the Top 5 MMORPGs right now in terms of population an profit. I don't think its going anywhere anytime soon. The peoples like their Final Fantasys.

Re: First impressions, good but dying game?

I just came back and am finally able to enjoy the game for what it is. The only real problem is finding people to play with is much harder at low levels, right now I'm a 14 RDM and I might have to run to dunes to check out the party action (which is a really, long, and dangerous run from Windurst).

Naaa this game isn't about to die. I like to think of it as more of an implosion. All joking aside though. I think we might be seeing server migrations near the end of the year.

                          And you think that why?

Seriously, people have been saying stuff like this for YEARS. 'Lack' of low lvl pts does not mean the game is close to dying or even merging servers. There's still at least 500k active accounts and with SE taking a much more active stance in updating and protecting their game I see no reason for that number to drop dramatically.

This topic has come up at *least* once a month for the past three years. Speculation is not fact.

It is getting less newbie friendly tho. Low level is getting less and less fun.

The first year I played this game, the Dunes was my favourite place >.>; It used to be really fun and easy to level up there.
Now I don't even wanna answer people asking for party from the dunes.

Re: First impressions, good but dying game?

How much of that is because you've raised your standards? Years ago I remember talking 3 exp parties in Buburimu (yes, exp parties in Buburimu; I did say years ago) into allying at night to kill bogies, because so many people needed the robe for SJ. It was a mess, but a fun mess, and a bunch of people actually did get their robes (sometimes dying several times in the process). Then we'd split up and go back to exping during the day, and ally again at night.

I doubt if anyone would try that today (of course, you'd never find enough players to try it in the first place). And if they did, they'd probably consider that many deaths a "failure", regardless of the fact that they got what they wanted. (And start whining for raises, instead of just setting their home point in Mhaura and making back the exp during the day. Even low level players are afraid to die now, like they think they're going to lose 2 hours worth of experience instead of 2 fights worth.)

Similarly, even low level players now sometimes refer to 2k/hr as "slow exp" - never mind the fact that that's practically a level per hour. The game has only gotten easier and more newbie-friendly; it's the players who demand more and more from their time spent at low levels.

A static or LS party is still preferable to complete strangers; but it always was, if you had the choice. People who have had that experience don't want to go back to the old way, even though the old way isn't really any worse than it was when they didn't know there was any other way.

I think that also has to do with the proliferation of higher level players. If, for some strange reason, 3 parties happened to be in Buburimu at the same time, there's a very high chance that one or more of the players there will have high level friends that hey can call on for the same help. Just one or two high level players acting as a safety net can effectively shield the exp parties from Bogies and help farm the SJ items. During the day, that high level player could probably go and farm crawlers, gobs and elementals, so that they're not entirely bored during the daylight hours.

I think odds are also good that one of those players in the exp parties can dual box, and has a 2nd account with a high level char that can hunt Bogies at night and PL during the day.
