The difference in appearance between the PS2 versus Xbox 360 versions, let alone the PC version, is night and day.
Computationally, the Wii can certainly handle anything FFXI can dish out, but storage would be an issue, and control scheme would be a nightmare. Not to mention there's still no keyboard solution for the Wii.
    Icemage
a keyboard solution for the wii is one wiiconnect24 update away. seriously; the thing can already handle bluetooth generic communication, all it needs is a bluetooth Keyboard or Bluetooth Generic Human Interface driver and you're done with 'keyboard solution for the wii'.

the only reason Nintendo hasn't done it yet is because they want to sell their own keyboard peripheral and except for the opera browser, there's no reason to use a keyboard on the Wii currently.

as for the 'classic' controller: everywhere classic controllers are used, you can use a GC wavebird instead (which is quite a bit more robust than most ps2 dual-shocks) not that the game won't support 100% keyboard support just like the ps2 would.

not that there isn't a KB/GC combo controller just like there is for the ps2 either.

If this was so easy, why hasn't it already been done? Seriously, there are gazillions of USB keyboards out there. The PS3 and 360 work with them, as well as the wireless/USB combo peripherals; why can't the Wii?

I'm sorry, but if I had to use my Classic Controller to play FFXI, I'd kill myself. It's more flimsy than a PS2/PS3 controller, with the extra bonus of a lead weight (the Wiimote) dangling off of it a few inches away.

      Icemage
for the first two all it would take would be a wiiconnect 24 update...simple! You just need to add drivers for USB and/or bluetooth Keyboards. You could also add USB HDD support and since it's USB 2.0 it'd be plenty fast enough to run FFXI off of. I've said this before...just update the ye old firmware...

As for the classic controler I like that darn thing! It's like as SNES controler with analog sticks...and me and my little bother abused those old controlers back in the day. The controler part looks like I could give it the same kind of abuse...but if you don't like it just hook up a GC controler....in fact that might be better since you can make it virbrate when we catch fish or something XD

Re: Will we see FFXI for Wii?

Not that much better? really where do you people get your info from.. PS fanboy central?
        *Info from Wiki*
        PS2
        CPU 294 MHz
        GPU 147 MHz 16pp
        RAM 32 MiB RDRAM
        Wii
        CPU 729 MHz
GPU 243 MHz 8pp (not confirmed)
        RAM 64 MiB GDDR3 SDRAM
        * pp = pixel pipeline

Now I know that I could have gone in to way more detail about specs.... but honestly I wanted to keep it simple

I love my PS2 as much as my Wii.... but I am getting sick of this corrupted mindset that is spreading, about how "weak" the Wii is.

Give the Wii a USB HDD, keyboard (just needs drivers) and FFXI compiled and recoded for the Wii's system, and it would run better then on the PS2.
First of all, nothing I said even implies that I'm a PS fanboy. In fact, it would simply imply the opposite to a minor degree.

Besides, what I said is relative. So, unless the Wii is not better, then I can't be wrong. Besides, the Wii doesn't have an HDD, and the discs only hold up to 1.5GB (I don't know how much of the 6GB FFXI game the miniDVD could hold after compression). So if Square Enix wanted to go above and beyond what they had before, they'd once again be shooting themselves in the foot.

Why would they look at the system requirements for a console game?

It doesn't have keyboard support? Isn't this supposed to be an online gaming machine? Why no keyboard? That is surprising.
The most recent system update for Wii added primitive USB keyboard functionality.

Ahh, it always falls down to the cost vs. return. Not only that, SE is already working on their next-gen MMO, so it wouldn't make sense to make a port for the Wii.

By "next-gen MMO", do you mean this failure?

            yet not a mote of dust is stirred;

God I hope that wasn't it...

There was an interview a while back saying SE was working on their next-gen MMO, basically as the successor to FFXI, but they would keep supporting FFXI as long as people played it.

Probably not, as the platform for that game is PC.

This article shows that SE is working on some kind of next gen MMO that they claim is totally unrelated to FFXI. SE made this announcement as a rebuttal to a report which came out the day before that SE was working on a sequel to FFXI. Notice the date of this report: July 18, 2006. According to wki, Fantasy Earth: Zero would have already had its plug pulled by SE by the time this news report came out, or would have been on the verge of it happening. If Fantasy Earth: Zero had been the next gen MMO SE had mentioned in the past, SE would have referenced it directly in their rebuttal.

First I never called you a fanboy, I was referring to where you go your info, and again...where in the hell are you getting it, a simple search reveals this...

                  Media
                  Internal Storage
                  512MB Flash Memory
                  Optical Drive
12cm Wii Disc & 8cm GameCube Disc. Discs will self-load into the bay.
                  12cm Disc Capacity
                  4.7Gb (or 8.5Gb Dual Layer)
                  Memory Expansion
                  1 x SD Memory

1.5GB? uuumm no its normal DVD disk specs

and if you read some of the other posts a HDD soultion has already been discussed. Again "not much better" is not a thing to call the Wii compaired to the PS2

Wrong Wiki entry, bud. But when I looked up Wii Optical Disc, it did give me the GC's capacity. But that's still one among other points.

and if you read some of the other posts a HDD soultion has already been discussed.
I'm fully aware of that. But your solution isn't economically viable. Let's put ourselves in the shoes of a potential FFXI wii player:

If FFXI were to be on the Wii, and the buyer chose the Wii as opposed to the 360, it's more likely to be because the Wii is cheaper. But then the cheaper price would be nullified by the fact you have to buy an HDD.

Again "not much better" is not a thing to call the Wii compaired to the PS2
I beg to differ. And I'll say it again if I must. Let's look at it this way, when you consider the things we're doing with games on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, is the Wii all that much better than the PS2? No. Not at all. And there wouldn't be much room for improvement, if SE decided to graphically update.

But really, could you see SE announcing that they'd port FFXI to the Wii? I can't. I highly doubt that they'd get a big return on their investment. FFXI is more of a hardcore gamer's game anyways. And the Wii audience is predominantly casual market.

my argument was never if FFXI can our would be on Wii, it was that it could run on the Wiis hardware and actually preform better.

I know SE probably won't port it but that's no reason to be a troll...mostly as for me I'm just helping toy with the idea...

Anyway for the HDD...well old Reggie who runs NOA mentioned it as a posible add on in an interview awhile back. I mean with so many VC games I'm not sure I can live off 512 megs forever. KBs and HDDs just take driver updates and you keep assmuming that any HDD add-on will be for FFXI only. The Wii is not the NA PS2 and Nintendo is not like Sony....where they put out a nice HDD add-on and then pull all support for it like it never existed!
