personally, I find full keyboard is much better than compact keyboard for independent movement and camera control (the default layout just maps to hand position better) although compact keyboard has it's advantages as well (denser control layout -> less moving around the keyboard -> less chance to be 'centered' over the wrong keys, depending of course on your typing discipline).
ultimately, it's a matter of preference, one of the players I started with swore by his gamepad for alliance fights because of the ability to scroll up and down the alliance line intuitively (even if you map the control on keyboard, it's hardly intuitive) I've moved beyond that now, typing commands directly into the chat line and taking advantage of the <a#> tags to rapidly target anyone in the alliance.

I tried playing with just a keyboard when I first moved from PS2 over to PC. But targetting mobs on a pet swap while soloing as BST was just too difficult. Tab just wasn't cutting it. I suppose I could move my right hand over to the mouse specifically for targetting, but even that becomes difficult when multiple targets are hovering close together.
If I'm going to have to move my hands off the keyboard and onto something else, it might as well be a controller.

that's the point though. every button on the gamepad layout has a command bind available on the keyboard layout (not all of them are bound by default, the default layout more closely mimics a generic pc (mmo)rpg but they're all there). so you don't actually need to move your hands off one peripheral onto another at all with keyboard.
with mouse + kb or gamepad + kb, you will.
again though: the gamepad is more intuitive (in the sense that you don't really need to 'get used to' using it to be moderately competent) and some people prefer it over kb only controls.

I would no doubt fall under that category. Even if I bound cursor movement to certain keys, I would still prefer the feel of a controller. I'm so used to dual analog sticks for character movement + camera control.
If my background was a PC-based FPS player, I might feel differently.

I played halfway through beta on a keyboard and hated it. ...I could never get the camera right and moving was about 10 times as difficult as just pushing on an analog stick. A few months ago I got the PC edition again and tried the Kb...then remembered how horrible it was the last time! I ended up going out and buying a PS2-style USB controler and fixing the config so that it worked the exactly the same way as my PS2.
Back on the subject: I think that FFXI's controls would map perfectly onto the Wii Classic Controler....(not eveything needs motion controls)

Yes, but 1- can you even hook up accessories to the classic? You'd need a controller. 2- How many people are going to want to get the classic controller for ONE game? Unless you already buy from the virtual store, it's kinda useless.

2. SSBB will use the classic controler and most WII users buy VC games anywho XD
1. it does plug into the WIImote to work...but the WII's usb ports will be fine for keyboards ^^(or bluetooth)
BTW: I'm on my WII posting this...

1. adding generic bluetooth drivers is a matter of a software update (wouldn't even require firmware updating).
2. everything that uses the WII classic can also be done with a GC controller (wavebird etc.) which if you play virtual console *or* GC you'll have access to at least one of these.

Last thing I saw about bluetooth was someone suing the pants off a lot of companies that used bluetooth technology, I don't recall what it was over, but I really don't think that's something nintendo wants to get in to.
