3. the Wii is minimally, as good as a gamecube - gamecube was comparable to ps2. ps2 runs FFXI fine. (although not as fine as say, 360 and PC can) the Wii in fact, has some features that make it *better* than a GC (most notably, extra ram, which is the part of the ps2 that is most crippling additional features for the game at the moment.) The graphics engine is also slightly stronger than the ps2 (but again, not as strong as a PC or XB360).
as for controls: as long as it can support at least a compact keyboard it doesn't *really* need to support any gamepad controllers. it's not like you couldn't run it with a GC wavebird either for that matter.
It's definitely possible, the question then becomes: is this something that is economically feasible? (as in: will it add enough additional players to the game?) that's for SE to decide
Well as someone decided to throw at me before. You can't make comparisons of different technology, something about them is likely different enough that it provides it possibilities that others can not do. Still not convinced that the Wii system could even meet the games minimal requirements, let alone if the system is even along the same programming lines to make the already existing code work with that system.
Besides that from your own admittions, if the Wii is comparable to a PS2 with just a bit more RAM. Then if the PS2 is eventually dropped off as being supported then our new low limit will be the Wii.
Cheezy Test Result (I am nerdier than 96% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!)
Result: everyone and their uncle starts weilding a sword, just because Spirits Within is so much easier to pull off than any other WS.
What the Bow ones are easy too, most are just standing there and drawing your bow. Wonder how'll they get around that so the system knows which you want to do.

the biggest hurdle for a Wii port would have been the processor core: that is, the Wii runs on a modified Power PC core (which isn't going to use x86 architecture like pc's do) but for that matter, neither does the ps2 (which is itself a MIPS based architecture) and, interestingly, the xbox360 also runs on a Power PC derivative core (the Xenon/Waternoose) so that hurdle is largely handled.
Wii processor is a 730MHz PowerPC which is sufficient to meet FFXI's processor specs (although not terribly over the bar, ask anyone with a 4GHz processor if they see a *real* improvement in lag/frame skip. they don't.)
Wii onboard RAM is 88MB (64 of which is available for System memory) this is double the ps2 so no memory issues carry over here for storage space/variety of textures. (Xbox360 of course has significantly more RAM than this, although it is shared between video and system)
Wii video memory is slightly lacking (although again, approximately equivalent to the ps2) this would be the real hurdle for FFXI since it would mean being tied to the same level of graphics they're at right now for the game (not that they've announced any plans to drop the ps2 hardware support so far anyway). It would also not be necessary to update this part of the code for all platforms, although SE has in the past attempted to avoid any forking of the code base and application resources between platforms.

I can't stand the KB and mouse controls on the PC. That's basicly the worst way to control FFXI. Using the GC controlers or the classic controler would be much better...if SE ever makes a Wii edition...
I don't know anyone who uses a mouse with XI. keyboard controls are fine, I'm faster now with a straight keyboard than I could ever be with a gamepad + keyboard. (although typing at 80-100wpm depending on how alert I am has alot to do with that). likewise I would hope that if SE did make a port to the Wii that they didn't implement wii pointing as a mandatory requirement.

The KB controls are horrible....espc. for movement and controling the camera. I've had the PC edition on several occaions and I just could not stand using the kb to walk around, adjust the camera or even to select stuff from menus. Macros might be nice(actaully just using them from the KB works if you know where you put them) but to me FFXI needs a controler(since it was designed with one in mind) and the KB is for chatting.
Anyone who's had a controler in their hands would probably agree with me...it just maps that well onto the PS2 controler ^^
