  • Why did you pick that Job?

Since the PlayOnline Server has been down I've been reading more about the Jobs in FFXI. I want to make a black mage, but after reading about all the other jobs, I just can't decide. So here's what I'd like to know.

    1. What's your main job and what's so good about it?

    2. What job do you see as being overpopulated?

    I think that it.

Re: Why did you pick that Job?

    1. My main is WHM, and it's good because it's the job I play

Every job has pros and cons. But most of them are fairly well balanced with the exception of a few that need a few tweaks IMO. Some are in more demand than others, mainly healers/refreshers/tanks, but that I don't think should be a driving force to pick a job.

    2. As for question two, every job is overpopulated unless you are looking for that particular job. There can be 20 bards seeking when I'm off doing an event, but when I want to exp there are none. There may be 50 blms online, until I need 18 of them to kill something for me :3

As for what makes a job good, that varies. Some jobs are great in exp, but don't have as much of a role in some endgame events. And some jobs are hard to level, but really shine in some events. Blm for example has become a more difficult job to level, yet it's still a high in demand job at events.

I'm not real sure what you wanted from this particular thread, but there's my 2 gil. Bored at work, so at least it's something to do.

      1. My future Main Job will be Thief. I am working on getting my subs fully leveled first. What's so good about it? My favorite FF character of all time is Locke from FF6(3 in US). I identified with him in many ways and he was Thiefy(I just created a word :D). I carry that through to FFXI. I also enjoy the technical expertise that is required to be really good at Thief. I take pride in being able to do a difficult job well.

      2. Not so much Main job, but as a Sub Job Ninja is entirely overdone. I do not deny its utility as a Sub Job, but I hate how it is has become a knee-jerk reaction for SJ choice.

It was Monk, but I really don't like it anymore, and so I've changed it to Thief. Thief is my main because of how different it is from MNK, it requires a ton more skill, and a lot more paying attention, along with a new challenge for me. I find it a lot more fun, and that's what so great about it. :D

          2. What job do you see as being overpopulated?

Umm...right now...Warrior, Ninja and Red Mage seem terribly over populated to me.

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D

So how many time can you switch your main job. If you wanted to, could you have all of them maxed out?

You can change your job when ever you like with absolutly no penalty.

You can max them all out, and if you defeat maat with all of them you get a nifty cap with +7 all stats.

                1) My main(s) are SAM and MNK right now. I love SAM since I like the whole samurai idea, and the fact that I can help dish out lots of damage is a plus. MNK since I deal major damage on my own, and once I hit 35 I can farm better than with SAM.

                2) I haven't really noticed a large influx of one job. Last one was BLM in the dunes 2 months back.

Re: Why did you pick that Job?

I don't have a real main one, but RDM69 is my highest. I'm an oddball who enjoys just about every job; something like 8 jobs Lv.40+, and another 3 in the Lv.30's.

RDM is the highest because it was in a static party for a while, and afterwards I found it easy to get parties. Still, I regularly switch different jobs to level--I currently have static parties for BLM52 and PLD59, for example.

Just about every job has something going for it. The rhythm and the feeling of a being the party's protector is unbeatable on PLD; the excitement of skillfully applying techniques to keep monsters from injuring me keeps me glued to the screen on NIN; the security of knowing I have the tools to keep the tanks alive made it hard to stop leveling WHM even after I got all the Teleport spells; seeing my WAR terrorizing monsters and tanks alike with a Great Axe made me laugh; effortlessly out damaging other melee fighters on DRG makes me shake my head (in a good way); etc., etc.

                  yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

Re: Why did you pick that Job?

                    My main nowadays is MNK.

                    Why do I like it?
Because after playing PLD and NIN to 75, always having
to pay attention while tanking, it feels good
to play a job that basically performs itself.
                    MNK = FFXI on autopilot.
You engage, fire off a couple off Job Abilities,
then sit back and enjoy the show until you hit 100% TP.
And even with that attitude I'm always topping the parsers.

                    So yeah, MNK.

My first main was PLD, which I picked because I thought PLD was kickass. Turns out I was right.

Now I'm a RDM, because I wanted to be self-sufficient. It seems to be working out ok.

                        1. What's your main job and what's so good about it?
Current is RDM at 52 after today(would have been higher had not been for RMT infesting Kuftal Tunnel and slow exp in Quicksand Caves >_<). I love it because I'm a vital role to the party. With a good pt setup, I very rarely need to Convert, solo-wise I can stay alive easily thanks to Phalanx and En-spells. I cast much faster, and with elemental staffsAnd this is all on WHM sub, once I cap WHM and level NIN for subbing I'll probably go nuts, as I hear nothing but good things about RDM/NIN in solo situations.

                        2. What job do you see as being overpopulated?
Pre-75 is my only experience, but truly looking at AFTER 37(I don't count before that since people usually go 37 for subbing) I see lots of THF's and DRK's. Some of the other ones like WAR, RDM and WHM aren't that apparent really, which is no surprise since if it's anything like my experience, they probably level fast and out of that range.

Re: Why did you pick that Job?

                          WHM

i love it because i loved the way i was the balance between life and death in a lot of lower level parties. it's not so much that way at 75, with RDMS able to main heal with the right set up, and all /WHM can raise as well too. I still love it though, i love the healing and helping and raising. im the one that runs past random newbies and gives them a R3 even though they only really need a R1.

i just think its fun. everyones different though. i also recently really enjoy bard, im at lvl 30 now and i really really like it. WHM is good, but sometimes in certain party set ups, i found myself getting bored... *hastes party* *random cure* *dozes off* *hastes party again*

but bard is really great, you never run out of things to do, *pulls mob* *casts melee songs* *refreshes mp users* *etudes mages* *random cures* *looks for another mob to pull*

its really up to your playing style and what you like to do better.

as for which jobs are most populated, its really hard to say. each server is different, and its different at different levels... sometimes at lower levels you just cant find any mages to join your party, while at lvl 75, every other person is a RDM.

i personally dont think theres as many WHMs LFG at 75, (or its only when i need to replace myself in a party that theres none seeking) but last night....

                          /sea all inv 75

                          WHM
                          WHM
                          WHM
                          WHM
                          WHM

                          /falls over in shock

they were the ONLY people seeking at 75 at that time (just before JP peak)

                          strange..

I chose PLD because I thought it'd be awesome to play as a Taru. It was a real novelty at the time, but now you see them everywhere.

Then I leveled WAR because I wanted to be half decent at merit parties, and I even started to enjoy it very much simply because it was a straight out melee with axes.

"... and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."

Re: Why did you pick that Job?

I picked RDM in the beginning becuase I couldnt choose between melee and mage, so ended up picking the "fighter mage" (not bringing in BLU since I sisnt have a clue back then...actually its debatable now lol)

Since I have leveled it, I have come to realise the job is nothing what I thought it would be like, especially after 41. But I like the way its turned out and never looked back. Currently 66.

BUT... I have got the urge to deal some damage as well (some substanstial damage), which is not MP based at all, so I went with WAR. Partly becuase my NIN sub is pretty much done and also becuase I know some kickass WAR's which inspired me. I like to use crossbow/status bolts, use a lot of weapons, etc... Also considering THF becuase I love thise THF ws's I have learnt but cant bloody well use as RDM! Again /NIN for THF is pretty much done.
