Totally able to sub WHM for any job hey?
Didn't you miss out something? You cannot sub a lvl 37 WHM job for just ANYTHING.

In a pt, you wouldn't be able to for e.g. have a WAR, (whatever lvl it is) and sub WHM to it at lvl 37, would you?

Maybe you could have rephrased what you were saying, and said something like for e.g.

"Done with WHM subjob, totally able to sub WHM for any job I choose, as long as it is another spellcasting job like BLM, RDM, BLM e.t.c."

I know that NIN is a spellcaster too, and I think I heard somewhere quite a while back, that you can even have NIN to sub a mage job, but if I'm a bit misguided on that, then I'm sorry if I'm wrong.

I think a little perspective is in order.

Amount of experiences points needed to level from:
        Lv.1 to Lv.18: 39,750
        Lv.74 to Lv.75: 42,000

Granted, experience points come faster at Lv.74 than Lv.1-18, but leveling to 18 is not that bad at all, really.

Assuming that MNK is okay as sub in a pt, and since I'm hoping to take my THF to 75.
Is it crucial that I should take MNK to a high-ish lvl too? I never really intended to lvl any other tank jobs (would you call THF a tank job? I'm not sure) apart from THF because it has always been my favourite since I first started on it.

Will MNK be okay at lvl 5 all the way, or should it be levelled more, to help out with THF in a pt? Should I get MNK levelled to 37?
I used THF/MNK right after unlocking support job, and I have to say that combination is rather limited.

THF's Hand-to-Hand skill is only E; depending on food and accuracy gear you use, you'd probably notice very slow TP gain starting around mid 20's due to bad accuracy. The problem became really pronounced for me at late 20's, and I switched to Dagger (A rated skill) because of it.

Since the only real reason to go with /MNK is for the Martial Arts trait, using anything other than Hand-to-Hand means /NIN or /WAR would be better.

Using /NIN lets you equip an additional weapon for stat boost (primarily accuracy+ dagger, early on) from Lv.20. Post Lv.24, Utusemi:Ichi also helps a lot with pulling.

Using /WAR gives you Berserk post Lv.30, which significantly adds to damage output. (Post Lv.50, also gain Double Attack.)

Other appropriate support job includes /RNG, for multiple levels of Accuracy Bonus traits, and /DRG for its single Attack Bonus, Accuracy Bonus, and Jump/High Jump. Those are not as popular as /RNG or even /WAR, however.

          Re: Underleveled subjob

Actually WHM is a decent sub for any job depending on the circumstances. Usually not for parties, but missions and what not, whm is a great sub job. As well as soloing.

Whm is the main sub-job for bst. Nin/whm is a very useful combo for some fights and missions. And /whm for anytime you need sneak/invisible is nice to have.

The most viable sub for thief is ninja. Hope you're ready to farm necklaces. >.<
I'm actually starting to warm to the idea of becoming a nin now, because it seems to have a lot of nice, special spells...... all the utu semi and such which i'd like to get to know. Though I'm still uncertain about MNK though.

Farming necklaces? (I presume you mean yag necklaces)
            What's that for?

The Ninja scrolls are questable (the :Ichi line of spells) or are quite expensive on the AH. To be able to do the quest you need norg fame.

To raise Norg fame you have very limited options. The most common quest to raise fame is to do the quest that require 4 yagudo necklaces in Windy. And you would need to do this quest many times. It took me nearly 300 yagudo necklaces to aquire enough fame to unlock the ninja scroll quest.

Yes Yag necklaces, they are for increasing Norg fame for NIN

As far as subing WHM I spend all of my time Soling or in a static duo, when I duo I sub WHM and am responsible for healing with my THF so it isn't out of the question to run THF/WHM, as you will see everything in this game is situational. By subbing WHM and carrying Yag drinks and a different gear setup I bring something to my static duo that wouldn't be there otherwise, a increase in xp per hour, na spells and bar spells.

I understand others will say that it's not an appropriate sub and for traditional parties I agree, but don't discount ANY combination, many diverse combinations work situationally.

                  Re: Underleveled subjob

I don't really want to have to deal with 2 many jobs at once, since I would run out of space in my Inv if I did, and although I have been building up fame to get more space in my mog house too, I need the space for other items I collect - items I have crafted, items I am holding onto and waiting until items have been sold on the AH.... all other things like that e.t.c.

I can probably try to make space for armour and weapons for one more job for my THF, but THAT'S IT! I just want to lvl 'ONE JOB' for THF, and ONE ONLY!
                  No more clutter. Pleeeaassssee!

So that means I will either start on the NIN quest and keep that going to 37/38.
Or as mentioned above. Either THF/WAR or THF/DRG (starting on the DRG quest)
I actually rather like DRG because of the pet help. Or THF/RNG.
But that's about it really for me.

Oh, and btw - I like the thought of using hand to hand weapons in battle, a bit like fighting with your fists I suppose, but I don't actually like to use them since they seem to do less dmg than a regular weapon like a sword or other similar blade.

                    Re: Underleveled subjob

Farming necklaces is the most popular way to increase Norg Fame, but it may not be the best or easiest. I've heard from people that farming Zinc Ore is easier, as you get more fame per trade. Other than performing genocide on worms, you can also mine for it, which many people find relaxing. This is probably the best route to take if you are a miner, as you can easily get many.

I can't attest to this myself, but I turned in Zinc as I found it while leveling, and by the time I wanted to start Ninja, I only had to do like three necklace runs. This is compared to reports of 200 necklaces needed.

EDIT: If you want to only do one subjob for THF, WAR is probably best. I'd say NIN, but most people expect NIN/WAR tanks.

                      Er, you're missing the point.

WHM is always going to have applications to a main job, they just aren't applicable for melees in EXP PTs. But lets say I want to do a fairly soloable quest, but prefer to save some gil on sneak oils and prisim powers. /WHM is good for that. What if I'm soloing NIN, BST, DRG or any number of other jobs? /WHM is also good for that.

Its not a proper subjob for melees in EXP, but it has a place for any player to make life easier moving through Vana'diel.

Plus its a good opportunity to help others. I personally hate not being able to raise someone when I'm out just farming or doing simple quests. Feels good to have something that will help others rather than just shrug and move on.

At the risk of repeating what I already said earlier...

THF40/MNK20 has 54 DEX and 45 AGI. THF 40/MNK5 has 50 DEX and 43 AGI. If you could get a level 40 ring that gave you +4 DEX and +2 AGI? What if it also added +3 STR on top of all that? That's like Leaping Boots plus a STR boost.

THF75/MNK37 has 80 DEX and 71 AGI. THF75/MNK5 has 72 DEX and 67 AGI and access to the MNK job ability Focus, which boosts accuracy by 20. How much would you pay for a ring that gave you +8 DEX, +4 AGI and +20 acc?

Oh I plan to take WHM to 75. I'm very excited about that job as I've always liked the healer characters better in some of the older FF's, it seemed natural to start out wanting to be main healer. And I kinda fell into the same situation... enjoying my main much much more than my sub [it's blm too]. So I definately know how it feels. But it is important to have the sub leveled because the experience with the main just isn't the same without it.

                            Re: Underleveled subjob

From what i've read in other topics, THF/MNK is a good choice before you learn the Weaponskill Viperbite. When you get to 15, you can Sneak Attack/Combo which i've heard does alot of damage. THF/NIN is a good choice when you are around lvl 24+, the only thing that sucks is THF/NIN isnt a good choice in the Yhorator and Yutunga jungles because Mandragorias eat shadows very quickly. The good thing about it is, if you Sneak Attack something, you'll usually lose hate before the mob is able to defeat all of your shadows and if you do then the Tank will provoke the mob off of you (If you have a good Warrior, Ninja, or in some cases Monk tank.) I was a MNK/WAR in the Yutunga jungle once and I was in a party with a NIN/WAR, and two THF/NIN and later a WAR/NIN and a WHM. So basically we had somewhat of a blink tank party.

I agree with the others though that basically if you dont level your subjob to match your main that you dont care about it. I was in a party once were i was a 42WAR/21MNK, the leader wanted me to switch to /NIN even though I told him my sub was gimped. So i ended up going down there and eventually leaving party since I was unable to keep hate or hit anything (Also not my fault because they wanted me to dual wield lol). Only thing about NIN and /NIN is that you have to have a good amount of gil to be able to buy and or make all of your tools. Unless you have high Woodworking and can HQ stacks of tools.

Everyone has covered the finer points of SJs and why you should have them leveled, but I will go ahead and add my 2 gil anyway.

First - there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for having an underleveled Sub Job. None. It is not hard, and if you do it right, you will never had to worry about it again.

What is the "right" way? If you know what you want to do, find out what the good SJs are and get them to 37 before you start your Main job. For example, I want THF to be my eventual Main Job. The primary SJs for Thief are Warrior and Ninja. This is the path I am in the process of competeing:

MNK to 18 >> Get SJ Quest done
WAR/MNK to 37 >> Get Ninja Quest done
                              NIN/WAR to 37
                              THF/WAR or /NIN to 75.

Following that path, I will have my SJs fully leveled before I even begin my Main Job. That way I can focus fully on my Main and be done with the SJ routine. That is what I would call leveling your SJ the "right" way.

The shadows will only be needed when pulling (for which 3 shadows should be sufficient) and when you pull hate (for which 3 to 6 shadows should also be sufficient). Shadow hungry mandies are only a problem for blink tanks. On the rare occasion a THF is called on to tank at the low levels, they will have to sub WAR for provoke anyways.
