Will the following spells ever become something that is usable in FFXI?

    WHM

    Feather - Increases movement speed

Possibly filling the gap between 51 and 56

Shining Spikes - Drains MP on contact

Cos a WHM needs SOMETHING offensive

    BLM

    Drain Spikes

    Just because its BLACK magic

    Feedback appreciated

    Thanks

    A couple of things.

The title needs to be in the form of a question. You don't actually have a question. You have a suggestion. WHM has offensive spells. What kind of BLM wants to get hit?

      Re: Spell suggestions

As a whm I'd prefer to not get more offensive spells.

For me to actually cast a spell like Shining Spikes it would have to cast fast, cost little mp, and last a long time. I don't have time to sit there casting spells that aren't benifiting the party. And if I'm getting hit, there is probably something wrong with the party. If it's an O S**t moment, I have benediction for that. Shining spike would just give reasons for whm to try and play DD. It's fun to play, but when exping, a whm should rarly be hit, and the spell would be a waste IMO. We already have our toy spell, Holy. Crappy damage, but flashy. Thats what I want. Something to impress people with, with no chance of pulling hate with it. (this is more joking, Holy has it's uses, just need a build for it)

As for Feather, I'm not sure why that name was choosen, perhaps relation to an older FF that I havn't played? But I don't realy see how that would fit a whm role or how I would benifit from it? I don't wanna flee from the people protecting me in a party. Thats cardinal rule number 1 in whm 101. DON'T RUN AWAY. Sure, I like flee, but don't think it should be a whm ability, and a spell at that.

I think giving blm dread spikes would just give them more reasons to overnuke. I actually believe the game is balanced in that regard that while a BLM can do massive damage, they have to hold back in fear of getting killed. The agruement that it's dark based doesn't mean anything. The absord line is all dark based as well if I'm not mistaken, and a Dark Knight having the spell makes sense and has a use.

I think something along the lines of Aspir II would be more fitting to blm. Perhaps drains hp and turns into MP? I ono. Could be cool to see something along those lines.

And last, it's the Ask Square Enix Question thread, so you have to ask a question. Not just provide answers to problems that don't exist.

Is all you do as a WHM party or summat? Get out there an play the game, these spells (as with all offensive WHM spells) are only gonna be used when theres not someone around you who is better at using it. Lol

OK, maybe not the BLM gettin Drain Spikes. Id agree with your points on that one...

I'm going to assume the word "summat" is some sort of slang for something? I don't know.

I do play the game. And don't see a need for shining spikes. Most, if not all spells, are designed for party play, and that is what the game is focused on. Whm has enough toys that they don't need "Shining Spikes"

We get Reverand Mail, the pirate cudgels, the easiest to obtain equipment with haste on it, among other things. To recover MP we have Spirit Taker.

I would assume that a spell like shining spikes would convert a percentage of damage to MP. However if I'm out "playing the game" I'm usually /nin and have stoneskin up. Therefore negated the vast majority of damage I'm taking. Most time's when I'm out doing things like soloing LB2, coffer key hunts, skill up parties and the such where I'm goofing around with my whm DD set I don't take any damage at all.

By adding more offensive spells for whm, you would encourage more whm's to use them. And thus create more whms that like to pull out thier stick and whack mobs around for a bit of fun. That's fine if thier with friends goofing around, but a whm in exp telling me they don't have to rest because of Shining Spike would quickly get a boot from my party.

Would be great if all whm's knew that it was just another useless spell, but I don't think it would be applied that way. And I don't see a need for it outside of exp or other events where a whm plays whm.

            You asked for it...

I think your ideas are rather pointless and out of place.

First off, why would "Shining Spikes" drain MP? Wouldn't that be Dark Magic, since draining and MP in general is related to Darkness.

Second, how does this help either WHM or BLM at all? Maybe these can be used for PLD or DRK, or stuff that wants to get hit. Not BLM or WHM where getting hit means either "fighting EPs or under soloing" or "about to die".

This would actually make a great spell for PLD...

Pld I could see the uses. Would have to be limited I think, seeing as they already have auto-refresh as well a parade gorget. With Sanction refresh (once they party in Aht Urghan areas) they have refresh at pretty much all times. With refresh they are getting 5-6 mp/tick.

Perhaps have a stipulation like dark's dread spikes. It will only absord like 10% of thier max MP, and have a long recast time like 3 to 5 minutes

                  Re: Spell suggestions

Yeah, those spells seem rather silly, considering that in party play the WHM and BLM should ideally not be anywhere near the mob. And power-sapping effects are the domain of Dark spells. No reason a Divine spell would be made in the same cast. And WHMs already have offensive spells: Dia, Banish, and Holy. They even have their own exclusive weapon skill.

In the end, these spells just don't fit the proposed jobs' styles. "Increases movement speed?" That's the realm of THF and Mazurka casting BRD.
Spikes spells? Not on a WHM, they're medics, tick damage doesn't really become them. Nor does it fit on PLD which is also something of a direct-damage type of role.
I will agree that Dread spikes wouldn't be a far-fetched idea on a BLM, but again, the way it currently is, when would a BLM need it? Besides, it fits the DRK's whole "vampiresque" motif, which is why it is exclusively theirs.

                    OK, how does this look?

Will the following spells ever become something that is usable in FFXI?

                    WHM

                    Feather - increases movement speed

                    PLD

Shining Spikes - Drains MP (high recast time)

Thankyou all for your feedback so far

Neways, it has now been worded as a question...
