  • Anyone recommend a good noob toon to start with?

Hey all I am brand new to game and was wondering what is the most fun and rewarding toon to start with. I was leaning to monk but they seem kind of boring just standing there amd auto attack until you get skills at level 5 I guess. Anyway was thing of bard or whm because I understand that this is a party type game and if this is the case I was leaning toward a good support class that can make a good group even better but one that is fun and not tedious or repeatative. Thanks for all who reply.

Don't say toon... please. Painful to the ears(/eyes).

You are going to have to find out what you like best for yourself. Some people can't stand to play WHM or BRD for a moment.

You can't start with Bard, as it's an "advanced" job, which means you have to level one of the starting jobs (Warrior, Monk, Thief, White/Black/Red Mage) to 30 first, and then complete a quest to unlock it.

Personally, I think Monk is a great job to start with, as it doesn't require too much knowledge of the game to function, and it can be a nice subjob for WAR or THF during the lower levels if you want to level those later on. But RDM or WHM are great support jobs to start with if that's your goal. RDM is a bit more self-sufficient than WHM, but both are very useful to parties.

You'll be leveling almost every job in the game at some point, whether it for fun or for other purposes. You should start with either a melee or mage combination such as Mnk, War, Thf, or Blm, Whm, Rdm. Warrior and White Mage are the standard all-around sub jobs for almost every situation.

A great starting job is Black Mage if you really want to deal massive amounts of dmg in one single burst. You will get manny party envites and it is a most respected job if you get good at it. But yet agin this is just my opionon and you may not like the mage jobs some ppl are not cut out for it.

All of the starting jobs are good to start with and some are naturals at some jobs but have to work at others. theres also some really good beginers guides on www.gamefaqs.com hope i helped some

For starting mage jobs, it might be easier to start off with WHM. Even without a subjob, WHM can still perform the task of main healing, and every party (besides PL'ed ones) needs a healer.

BLM, in spite of being a very good damage job, is rather limited to just being about damage in the early levels. Without a support job, you'll be stuck in a rather limited role, and may find invites harder to get. If you level WHM first and unlock subjobs, I'm guessing invites will be a little better as BLM/WHM, since you can do backup healing in addition to nuking.

My advice would be to try out each of the six starting jobs for a few levels and decide which is most appealing to you.

Keep in mind that once you reach level 10-11, you'll probably need to join an EXP party to get decent EXP, and the way you play a job will change as well. You're also going to see changes in gameplay when you reach level 18 (subjob), and around level 35-42 (when some jobs go through some drastic changes).

Re: Anyone recommend a good noob toon to start with?

mnk is definately the simplest thing to start with, but it doesn't really have a lot of variety. I got bored with it.

If you want to experience as wide a range of what the game has to offer early on, I'd recommend starting as red mage. In the early levels, rdms can do a little bit of melee, main heal a bit and play with offensive magic. Take that to level 18 and see what aspects of the job you enjoy the most. If you're still keen on playing a support class, you can start leveling whm with rdm as your support job. (Technically blm is a better sub, but rdm works too.) When you get whm to level 30 you can use it to unlock bard and see if you like that. White mage is the most common subjob for bard until higher levels, so you'll already be prepared.

Re: Anyone recommend a good noob toon to start with?

MNK is the job to pick if you want to go out kicking ass right off the bat.

As far as support jobs go, getting repetitive is 100% unavoidable with any job in this game, let me make that clear right now. This is an MMO, there is a growing yet consistent grind to this game (and all MMO's really) that you just have to get used to.

That said, the top 3 support classes are Bard, Corsair and Red Mage.

Bard is the number one choice if you're looking to power up others and have EXP flow smoothly. The only major expenses you'll have are a few of the really good songs (ballad II) and +1 instruments (+2 are a waste). I personally find BRD to be the most removed from combat out of the three though. You're really just running around like a chicken with it's head cut off maintaining group buffs, debuffing the mob, and sometimes pulling.

Corsair is very similar to bard, with a few key exceptions. The biggest being money. Corsair is a "Consumables" job, so you'll be spending extra gil for ammunition (Bullets) and Cards for Quickdraw. The buffs it employs are also somewhat random, but that's the nature of the job. Also, unlike the other two, you can sub RNG for a more physically offensive approach allowing you to deal damage and buff your party members at the same time.

Last is Red Mage. Thought to be overpowered by some due to it's amazing soloing potential, RDM does it all. Healing, Enfeebling, Nuking, Buffing, and on occasion melee or even tanking (tanking is pretty rare these days though). As far as costs go, RDM is more expensive than BRD in terms of spells and multiple sets of equipment, but it still cheaper than corsair. Later on you'll mostly be asked to main heal on top of your regular duties, and this can get pretty stressful if you're not used to multi-tasking.

I hope that helps you make your decision ^^ (Note that you can't pick BRD or COR until you get to lv 30 and complete the quests to unlock them)

Re: Anyone recommend a good noob toon to start with?

What I would advise for you to do is play the class that you truly find most appealing, and the only way to do that is to try them all out a bit. Monk is a bit more involved than auto-attacking, but extremely expensive and prone to waiting a very long time before getting invited to a group. My first time through the game I loved playing monk, but I had optimal gear that I had purchased while leveling other–less costly–classes. If you're leaning towards focusing on melee classes like monk I wouldn't pick a tarutaru, because though it can be viable and fun to play as a taru melee it'll end up costing you more to boost your stats to an appropriate level of the other races.
If you're thinking of becoming a bard, another classes I really enjoyed, then I'd advise leveling white mage first. White mage is really the standard sub-job for bards, after you leveled white mage to 15 you'd probably want to level black mage or red mage. White mage also gets a fair amount of invites from parties, as does bard. The cost of white mage and bard were pretty negligible if I recall correctly.

BRD can get expensive actually as you pile up those +1 instruments. No where near as bad as jobs like DRK and MNK, but they're also the only major purchases you *need* to make.

Even with the +1s, BRD is dirt cheap.

Almost any job can be played as cheaply or as expensively as you like when it comes to gear. It's when you get into consumables that a job can get expensive. You always have the option of selling back high performance gear should you permanantly move on from a job, but you'll never get back the gil you sunk into consumables.

None of the starting jobs eats up consumables, so that's a plus.

For reals. My BRD was easily the best money saving job I ever leveled. WHM was a close second.

I don't know... WAR gets Berserk at Lv.15, what do MNK's get when exp'ing on those ever popular "Scissor Guard" crabs in Valkurm Dunes? (Other thank lot's of 0 point damage hits?)

(Heck, WAR's can even "dispel" those annoying Scissor Guard with Acid Bolts, while MNK's have to content themselves with tossing pebbles...)

IMO, WAR and BLM are the only standard jobs which do decent damage early in partying levels. Extra job wise, DRG seems to be the clear winner until Lv.30 or so, unless you have a BST who always manages to keep an Even Match pet around.
