Yeah the female beastman pic makes me gag too. Why'd you go and post it and subject all of us to that?

There were a couple, yeah that made me wtf, but I think overall they're pretty good. Certainly beyond my level of ability anyway. Though I'll agree I've seen more, better art on Gulkeeva's site ... content notwithstanding >.>

I posted it because I love when people suffer. Pretty nice of me, huh?

yeah there was only a few that I would say were really good. The shiva one, dark knight one, the females at the table, and the summer one with taru, elvaan, and hume sitting on a tree or something. Those were the best ones. Other just look ugh.

I don't understand why people are being so harsh. Guess its easier to criticize than submit your own art for our public viewing, eh?

          I liked these:

So we are supposed to praise it just because they decided to do it? Nah, that can't be right or we couldn't say we dislike anything.

I said why I was being so harsh. Some of the winning pieces aren't bad, but I've seen far better submitted since the contest began. I don't know what their selection process was like, but they obviously have different standards than I do. The kind of art that I make isn't of the fanart variety, so I didn't bother to submit anything. But that doesn't preclude my ability to judge the pieces that other people submitted.

I do like that Star Sybil one a lot. Just wish it were larger.

Its spineless to play art critic on the internet and not post your own art to show us something better. Put up or shut up.

I'm very much will to bet you don't have the backbone to give these criticisms to these artists in real life.

That's ridiculous. Do you expect the same of film critics? It's not as though they can just run right out and make a big budget film to give themselves some credentials. What about food critics? You don't have to be able to cook to know what tastes good and why.

You're playing art critic just as much by liking the pieces. Where is your art?

You don't need to make your own art, but instead of saying "These all suck" they should say "I don't like these because of [insert reason for not liking here], but I do like this one because of [insert reason for liking here]."

I'm not condemning people's work here. You didn't sumbit a piece, nor did I, so where is our place to make cruel commentaries on what was submitted? Cut your typical Devil's Advocate bullshit and give me one great reason for your pointless "I don't like it because it sucks" commentary.

Murphie hit it spot on with what I was trying to say. If you followed your advise you can't even complain about what you dislike about this game because you didn't make a MMO of your own(if you did, impressive).

And I probably would say it to their face. I'm a very brutally honest person.

So you would be one of those people that insists that nobody can comment on how a job should be played without leveling it to 75?

Art is supposed to provoke a response from the viewer. As viewers of art we are entitled to express our reaction to the art, positive or negative. One needn't be a novelist to say whether a book was good or not or an actor to judge the effectiveness of a performance.

And as Murphie said, if the only person qualified to judge a skill is someone greater in that skill, then your own statement of which pieces were particularly notable is also unqualified unless you post some work that is demonstrably better.

                            Devil's advocate bullshit indeed.

I liked quite a few of the pieces submitted, actually. But there were several that just made me wonder.

                            Liked:
Star Sybil. I like the rich colors.
Dark Knight. I like the technique.
Hume in Scorpion Harness. Rich colors again.

                            Disliked:
Napolean Dynamite liger picture. (Or mithra, whatev.)
                            The beastmen ladies.
                            Everything else to varying degrees.

I'm sorry, I keep forgetting this is the Internet, where all you have to do is be a dick with a keyboard to think you're a real critic or journalist. I don't get the logic where I have to post art I think is better when I didn't make as submission or think what I could do is better. I don't think my art is better, so I'll just appreciate the work other people put forth instead.

And for the record, just how many other job forums do you see me comment on outside of the ones I play? People's opinions on how a job should be played or what art should be like without experience is recognized, its nice you have a keyboard and thank you for sharing, but recongnition does not make it valid to those with experience. There is a difference between knowing the gist of how something functions and applying it for yourself.

I grew up in a very artistic environment, I guess I'm just willing to recognize and appreciate a different style, perspective or maturation in style even if I don't like it. Hell, I once had to work in a music store every day and hear music I wasn't terribly fond of, but I made it a point to listen to it so I could be knowledgeable about it and find comprable music my customers would likely enjoy.

There's still something to take away from things you don't like and artists won't improve without constructive critism. Saying "it sucks" isn't very helpful or worthwhile to anyone. You don't have to like something, but damn, even if you don't have a point of reference, try to maturely state why you don't like something.
