I find it funny people think they're owed a raise for dying. There was this person on the boat to Nashmau last night, someone I didn't particularly like and was a rude person in general. One of those people stuck on being at endgame levels, preaches to you about how you should do things based on endgame, which can be a disservice to lower level players.
Also once saw this guy chastise a newer player publicly for having an underlevelled sub and lacking gear. I accept the fact that some new players are just kids that don't know any better and just want to level up. I didn't see the need for this jerk to berate him in /say at the AH.
Anyway, back to the boat trip. Proteus is roaming the upper deck. I do want to kill him, but I'm not stupid enough to go after him alone. He's like a softer version of Charybdis, but hits just as hard and tears through shadows. You need a NIN and BRD to take him, along with some DDs since you can time out thanks it it being on a boat.
This player doesn't bother to check the NM, so I just opt not to warn him. I was enjoying my Four-Alarm Spicy Chicken sandwich anyway. Upon the death that followed, they send me tells for raise. I don't have a WHM sub on Kitten, workin on it, but in no rush since there's really nothing for COR in endgame right now. And they don't know I'm Foobar, who does have a WHM sub. Foobar's BST/WHM is stowed away in some hellish zone no one would dare PT in, I'm not making the 30 minute trip this raise would require.
We dock and I do a shout in this town of AFK for a raise and they proceed to say "Thanks for nothing." This after I told them I have no WHM sub that could raise them. Not my fault he was too dumb to /check, his experience should have told him to do that.
That little story aside. I don't really understand why the people with raise are somehow obligated to help you. I'm not crossing several zones to raise you. And I have zero sympathy for people that don't want a WHM in PT, but do want R2/3 when they die. I think its a slap in the face to a RDM or /WHM you did invite to refuse R1. Suck it up and take the R1 or you can HP for all I care.
I can't rely on WHMs as BST, unless I want to wait 45 minutes in hopes as mage will show, this is what reraisers, RR scrolls and items are for. If I was going against an unknown NM as any job, I'd pack a RR just in case.
