The problem with doing this solo is that there's quite a lot to charm in the way, particularly if she chooses the path through the "basement." There's so many monsters it's kind of hard to handle them all. I've tried and nearly done the quest several times as a 65 BST, actually making it to the room full of exorays right before it's finished, but never actually succeeded. Pretty frustrating, but undoubtedly possible.

Re: Want an easy Dragon Chronicles every week?

the NPC quest is all about having control of the NPC and monsters, not always killing things.

For example, when I did it I was a 50 something BLM, with a 75DRK. While he cleared monsters most of the way, at the ??? we got to monsters he couldn't handle (in CN, a herd of exorays I beleive), so I ES+Slpga2'd the mobs, we let the NPC run in, clicked the ???, and escaped.

It actually helped to have me there even though I was lower in level, because I ran slightly ahead of the NPC, so I was aggro'd before it was, if the DRK had failed to kill a mob.

I just soloed this quest this morning as 60 BST. As Feba mentioned, it's not necessarily prudent to kill mobs.

I simply ran ahead of the NPC and stopped her any time she approached a group of aggro mobs, such as Scorpions or Soldier Crawlers. And then I would...
        1. Charm the nearest aggro mob.
        2. Cast Sneak on myself (or perhaps Invis depending on the mob, but I only ran across sound detecting mobs)
        3. Sent my pet to Fight the next closest mob.
        4. Ran myself past the rest of the mobs.
        5. Told my pet to Heel, which would result in all of the mobs to link to my pet.
        6. Told my pet to Stay once all aggro mobs were linked.
        7. Told the NPC to start moving again.

Once the NPC was safely past all the mobs, I would release my pet. As long as I did things right, the only mob that would come after us would be the one my pet first engaged. And I would simply charm that one and release it.

The only time I came dangerously close to dying was when I botched dropping down to the Labyrinth Lizards. I left the NPC waiting at the top of the drop off (which is fine, as long as you can still get close enough to talk to her). But I forgot to cast sneak before dropping down. Along with my panic, I ended up with 4 Lizards beating on me. Somehow, I manage to come away with 500 HP left. I learned a good lesson, and the next run I do will be a lot smoother thanks to that lesson.

I used to do CN escort with a friend on BST. I'd throw carbuncle at a monster, link all the ones nearby onto carbuncle, then my friend would charm the monster I had carbuncle headbutt and we'd both release after the NPC ran through.

We could get through without killing a single monster, it was nice.

Most BSTs from before the "lol powerlevel and party woowoo" trend are (and I'm sure many from after are as well) aware of the linkless pull, but thanks for the tips. ;P

I've never killed a monster while trying to this quest. I've just got terrible luck with the position of the bees toward the end; they always seem to be facing just the wrong direction to get them to link, so I have to wait around; all the while the charmed bee is dying, and when it finally does I have to relink them all... They like to go after Olavia instead. Mostly it's just the tight little tunnels that make the thing difficult, because it takes so long to run back and forth and get the NPC past the monsters.

Another problem is the lag between when you "talk" to Olavia and when she actually stops running. Also, if you happen to need to issue an unfortunately long chain of pet commands, she can easily get too far out of reach.

Combined with my incompetence, this doesn't make for any easy quest.

But if you have a couple of friends who are after EXP scrolls, the Eldieme version (from Rondipur at F-6 in North San d'Oria) of Escort for Hire is a pleasant alternative, and it is fairly straightforward (unless someone is messing around with the gates). Of course, this does require you to kill the monsters, because they're resistant to sleep. Lullaby might work, but the monsters would eventually come screaming after the bard.
            Ho-hum.

The nice thing is that if the NPC dies, you can try again in short order. I actually had Olavia die once this morning, and had to retry. In that respect, it's a lot more forgiving than the chocobo mini-quest that spawned this thread. If you muck that up, you have to wait a whole week.

One time, I was doing the Bastok to Sandy Chocobo mini-quest. While I was making my way through Ronfaure, I saw one lowbie with half health being chased by a beastman of some sort. Without realizing why I was on the Chocobo, I decided to dismount and Provoke the mob. And that's when I realized what I was in the middle of.
