I will say this as somone who took RDM and BRD to high level jobs before others: I picked them up to help friends - I did have interest in playing them well, but they were more for utility than personal interest. In that regard levelling them was a mistake and ended up not being very fun.
Play the field with all the jobs of the game, see what appeals to you the most as a job and not just what gets you to 75 the fastest. Take time to unlock them all and play what you have fun with.
There's lots of fun and flexibility to be had from the job system in FFXI, I play lots of the jobs and generally try to find ones that complient each other for equipment overlap. For example, if you're a Ranger, they use some equipment a Corsair would also use, it saved me time since I didn't have to buy more gear to play another job.
The same can be said of job skills, there's a lot of overlap in mage jobs, as they all have access to similar equipment as well, not to mention the occasional overlap in spells. Black Mage, White Mage and Summoner have lots of gear they can use universally, while Red Mage and Blue Mage also share some ground.
