    Guess what. I tried it...

    And I zoned into both zones I would DC at... and I haven't.

    I suppose simply changing your MAC address works.

    But why?

              Unfortunately, not in the free version. I'm contemplating trying to run POL Viewer from WINE under GNU/Linux and look through the debug output for more info.

              Read means generally it tried to read memory belonging to a protected process. The program doesn't get much more specific than "Read", "Modify", and "Terminate"

              I'd like to see if I can get someone who doesn't use an ATI video adaptor to verify these results, since I have seen ATI's driver perform the same kind of system-wide scan, and it's possible that something POL is doing is causing the driver to reissue this scan from within POL's process-space, if not exactly likely.

              (Note: Since each process has its own protected virtual memory area it's not allowed to read outside of (remember General Protection Fault? Read/write outside this area) I'm assuming this is actually making a 'read' request to Windows process control; I'm not versed on the workings of the Windows NT kernel, so I can't say too much here about the specifics.)

                    It could simply be doing something other than reporting on it or sending it to Square Enix or a third party; it could be using that information to modify its own behavior at run time without actually retaining it or sending it. It is very difficult to say what is being done, whether it contradicts SE statements, and whether it violates applicable law without knowing precisely what it is requesting, which is going to take something more sophisticated than the free version of Process Guard to determine.

                      I think they're really trying to hide that they're not going to repair this because they're going to shut down the servers in several weeks. SO SPREAD TEH WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Before the FFXI Rapture, all drop rates will become 100%, taru's will always be on fire and we'll be able to play as male mithras!

                        Lunaryn, I had thought the same thing about programs being somewhat protected in 32-bit systems, but in response to my comment:

                        BTW, neither Linux, Generic UNIX or OS X isolate processes memory like that. That is still the realm of special OS's. On top of that, is what POL doing reading allocated memory or files on a HDD, they're two very different things.
                        Unfortunately, no one could point me to a good reference to learn more about processes. I've been busy this week, but if I've got time this weekend I'm going to install ProcessGuard on my laptop and see for myself what POL.exe is doing. I want to make sure I do a full backup of my computer first.

                              Basically, use the Windows' API to grab a handle to the process you want (set read/write flags, etc. while you're at it), then it's like an open book.

                              (This is the first time I've dug into this topic; some info are a little scary. ^_^; )

                                What I mean is I think a lot of this may just be preliminary footwork so the foundation is in place for a program that does let them know what's going on. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they put some 'warden'-esque program into place once they put out the official windowing.
