  • Dark Knight=new tank?

I don't know but all this drain stuff(dark spikes, ETC.) they are giving Dark Knight seems to aimed at helping the Job become more of a tank. I know Drain spells don't always stick but a Job that can consistantly recover a certain amount of HP reminds me abit of Pally. If the spkies work good...well maybe we have a 4th tank or at least a backup?

What's your take?(and I know the abilites have not been released yet)

Huh? Dark Spikes? You mean the new Dread spikes? I don't think it's for tanking, but rather helping DRK die less often. :-P He probably won't be taking too many hits to really be useful.

As far as I know, the only "drain" stuff out there is... Drain. :-\

Drain II would help to maybe cause more damage for Souleater.

Am I missing something? How ELSE do they consistantly recover a certain amount of HP?

I don't see DRK being a main tank at all. They don't have the defense for it.

DRK tanking is about as good as a BLM meleeing. Drain alone is not going to help you tank, as dark knight's defense is so horribly bad.

Agreed. I was leveling ... I think it was my PLD, I don't remember, and for some odd reason, the DRK wanted to tank. That's why she died twice withing 4 fights after I joined.

Exactly. The new DRK spells add to their offensive capabilities (as well as let them be more emo about taking someone's life and adding it to their own), but adds nothing to defense or longevity. It's still going to hurt when they get hit.

Yeah, with a 3 minute recast on both Drain 2 and Dread Spikes you're not going to be getting a ton of healing mileage out of either of them I'm betting. Also tanking and Soul Eater, Last Resort and Berserk don't tend to live well together.

Dread Spikes could be fun for questing or farming though, or to help offset the Drk taking a hit or two before the tank gets hate back.

Even if they gave DRK enough tanking abilities, stats and gear, you'd still have to get past the mindset of the DRK population. It's hard enough convicing some WARs that they can tank. Imagine how much harder it would be to talk a random seeking DRK into being a tank.

                  Re: Dark Knight=new tank?

DRK's defense is really not that bad, as a job. It's the fact that players ignore their defense to load up on +att and +acc gear and food and then go berserk that makes their defense bad.

They can wear a lot of the same armor a PLD or WAR would be wearing at many levels.

With the new spells and the signet changes DRK could easily tank for a duo or trio (wearing more defensive armor than they normally do as a DD), but I don't think this goes far enough to make them a good choice for tanking a 6 person party. You can't even keep dread spikes up all the time (recast is longer than duration, plus it can wear off early once you have absorbed a certain amount of damage).

                    Re: Dark Knight=new tank?

DRK defense isn't bad, by itself. But the AF and JSE's tack on so much "Damage Taken +," and non-JSEs tend to focus on everything but defensive capabilities, DRK is hard-put to tank in any capacity. The new updates are good for helping DRK last a little longer. Maybe with the DoT they Dread Spikes can put out, DRKs will worry a little less about the damage their Scythe deals, thereby putting less enmity on them every time they hit the mob.

Drk's can not tank!!! anyone that thinks this has never played drk past the mid levels. the higher level you reach the worse it gets. i was thinking i might be able to solo an EP low low now with these updates. yes drks get heavy armor but our base def is extremely low. in partys where i was asked to be 1st voke for the sata, if the thf was slow and i took more than 4 hits i was probaly dead. i guess if i ate tank food and wore nothing but vit gear and subbed /nin, i could probaly tank a decent mob, but the mages would be chain casting cures. these updates with these new spells will help with souleater and give us a way to get some hp back.

S-E's intent was to make DRK more viable, but what they didn't expect was that this is a small bump in survivability for the HNM KrakenDRK.

                          Re: Dark Knight=new tank?

                          Yeah....

I can keep hate like a pro! No problems there, the problem stems from the fact that I can't take a punch! Especially after I just gave up half my HP to slapping the mob with a huge Guillotine.

If Dread Spikes are anything like Ice/Blaze/Shock Spikes they're only going to be viable during farming! And if they do some how draw back 50HP each time you get hit, it's gonna get beat down with the NERF STIX shortly there after. Everybody and their mother would have a fit about that.

Anybody surprised that PLD didn't get Divine Spikes? If they added Dread Spikes, why not add Divine Spikes for PLD. Possibly draining the mob's DEF or maybe a Flash effect. Just seems like for balance they should have gotten something.
