Questions About the Expansion Packs...

I plan on getting the 3 expansion packs with FFXI, but I don't know exactly what they do... If I were to make an account on just regular FFXI, lvl the account a bit, then decide to use one of the expansion packs, will I have to start all over in a completely different world, completely different characters, etc?

And if this is so, what would you all suggest is the best to just stick with?

Basically what do the expansion packs do to regular FFXI if I were to use one?

And expansion pack adds data for new zones and various other elements, but the most basic explanation is there will be areas, jobs and other content you're completely unable to access without installing these expansions.

You'd be able to see and work with expansion jobs, even start quests from original zones that entail going to expansion zones, but without installing the expansions, you'll have no ability to play those jobs or complete those quests.

Ahh, I get it. So there're places that without the expansion packs that are THERE, but not able to get to through just "regular" FFXI, and when you use the expansion pack, it opens it for you... Kind of like a key to a gate?

Yes and no.

The zones aren't in your game until you install them. You might see some place you could enter, but without the expansions, the server just tells you that you're not able to enter. That or the entrance just isn't there at all.

Installing the expansion does not give you all-access to the new zones outright, sometimes various criteria must be met - like missions being completed or quests activated - to get into areas related to those missions or quests.

For example, you may go the port village of Mhuara and there's a boat that takes people to the Aht'Urghan Empire, you can even get on it, but you'll be kicked out as the boat takes off because you didn't have a pass allowing you passage to the Empire. You must complete a quest in Jeuno with the Tenshondo to get the pass.

All you have to do is go to your Contend IDs I believe under the viewer and click "Register Expansion" or w/e it's called.

You then enter the key code that's printed on the box/manual of the expansion pack and register it. Then all the new content is ready for use. There's no reason not to do this, as it's all goodies and magic faeries and stuff :3
